This is great listening practice for self-study japanese learners. I am grateful to JP101 for putting this on, but I wish the english translation were were more exact of what they actually said. It would help to understand the grammar and the vocab better. For example, in the first one - ようさそうね does not mean "it's got everything we need, doesn't it". It means "looks good, right?". Lots of examples like that. Again. I am grateful to JP101 for doing this, and please give us more, but just a suggestion.

Demo Mann you are right, when content is aimed at learners, traduction must be as loyal to the target language as it can be. Interpretation leads to misconceptions by learners when they relate the word’s meaning to the interpreted traduction. Especially in japanese since it’s so foreign grammarly-wise

Came to the comment section to say this too! Very very good listening practice but the english translation can be a bit misleading/confusing for people who has no idea what some specific words mean and are trying to take notes to remember them!

I agree with this! The sentence which confused me a bit was 海が見えるお部屋での禁煙のツインルームは満室となっております。which they translated as "The only ocean view room available on that day is a smoking room", but in reality it literally says "Non-smoking twin bed rooms with a view to the sea are fully booked."

This video is perfect for my level! Very challenging but able to understand maybe 20% on the first go and 50%-60% after seeing the subtitles. Thanks for doing stuff like this for free!

This is the part of learning! Slow the video down to 0.75 so you can hear the words more clearly and start googling and jot the word down on a notepad. Don't be discouraged because you will come across small bumps along the road no matter how good you are.

Just listen to the voices and pick out the pronunciation that way (it is listening comprehension after all)

I agree with the reply above me, you can hear the pronunciation. Stop reading and start listening. When you actually read (as in a book, or article) you're mainly doing it for vocabulary and general input to get used to the way things are structured, both in the spoken language (dialogue, quotes) and the written. When you listen, your focus is better off being entirely on just that: listening. How well you can comprehend words and sentences which are spoken to you out loud is important, because there are no subtitles in reality.

This video made me realize that my Japanese listening skills are not that bad!

The videos are good and helpful thank you for this free program. I have to add some critics too: The exercise at 39mins in my eyes is completely incomprehensible unless you hear the explanation first. I was totally lost what 1st, 2nd, 3rd means. The pictures are also quite confusing: The board with people could also be a "meeting", what does the red people mean? The cashier could be the cafe too! If you mean a lesson or class use a doctors hat, everybody knows it's school! If you want to show a part time job use a shovel or any tools crossed as a symbol for work. I think both symbols for school and work are internationally understandable compared to a cashier and people in front of a board. thanks!

Really good. Reading the text helps me a lot. It also puts things into perspective: I can barely understand anything despite having learned Japanese on and off for the last 15 years. But I'm sure that exercises like this can't be detrimental to my snail-pace learning progress, right?

Very difficult, but very different and nice!

Is this the average speed of how quickly Japanese people speak? If it is, I'm glad I was able to understand most of it without a transcript. Listening to Japanese really helps improve listening skills.

Some of this examples are so hard and others so easy >o

For all the people having trouble with the vocabulary, I suggest basic and intermediate kanji practice as most of these words are very common and by having a grasp on N3 level Kanji or higher you will have an easier time of it. I suggest using services like Wanikani or Bunpro.

Thanks to anime I got most of it ahaha, I should try to learn seriously, it may work out

could be that using the kanji, you would read it with the Chinese reading of the kanji characters. But I'm just speculating, I might be wrong.

He had a rising tone at the end, indicating a question. Because of that, it can be literally translated to "Is it not quite good?" in a sarcastic way, which can translate to "It's nice, isn't it?" or basically "It's quite good."

@@devi121 She said she is at school 火曜, 水曜 and 木曜... so why did she suggest 金曜 after that? The man doesn't have school Friday either. That is why i think its a mistake, the English translation doesn't match.

Speaking and listening are more important than reading and writing, but are much harder to find good resources for. I'd say that listening is slightly more important than speaking, but you really need both.

There is a mistake in the question two. It talks about "twin room" when the picture clearly shows "double room".

the images used for the schedules starting from 39:00 are not clear at all. there are four schedules supposed to represent days, I guess but even after the explanation how was one supposed to come to the conclusion that the yellow schedule was Thursday???? I didn't understand what I was looking at at all

Meghann Hlibichuk same here. I guess in n2 exam, instead of pick the right one, it will ask you to label the timetable for the day. Listening is all about fully understand every bit in the whole sentence. Also I think there is something to do with colour, Thursday is wood day in Japanese,therefore green timetable. So in the end both of them agree with wood day, I can cheat this question without understand the whole thing just because it's green. Lol

@@Cheng798536 I've taken the N2 and there was no labeling involved -- only multiple choice. But anyway, I still don't see any correlation between 木 and the color green. I don't think most people would universally agree that wood is green -- it's usually brown-ish soo even though a tree's leaves are green it would not be my first instinct to assume that the kanji of the days of the week are representative of the color used to label those days.

In addition to hearing and studying vocabulary, read japanese aloud. It will generate muscular memory, and somehow, make listening easier.

I feel like crying when I understand everything on second try for the 1st question. It can't be understated how important it is to actually do listening instead of just memorize words/reading. I wouldn't have understood anything if there are no visual clues at all

How to master N3 or intermediate level, listening and vocabularies ? For 3 times I had the JLPT N3 tests and 3 times I failed T_T i feel so frustated

안두냇수ファビオ same with me. Well, I understood some, but the hardest thing here was the fact that they used A LOT of very polite speech. Most of the resources I've used hasn't gone over that, except for one -- Satori Reader. Once the text popped up, though, I could at least feel a sense of "Ahhh, okay, I got it", but then it's too late -_-

lol i pointed out a grammatical mistake, asked them for clarification, and they deleted my comment? i will post this as many times as needed, because this is the kind of shit i hate the most in the education field. People not admitting their mistakes because of whatever reasons and keep spreading false information around

yeah, except that you wont really be fluent if you just use it in the classroom. I heard it takes about 2000h for English native speakers to fully master Japanese...

YoureTuned Yep I've heard that number tossed around as well. I'm living in Japan now and it takes 7 semesters of Japanese at Waseda University to be considered advanced. I just finished taking level 5 at my school and I'm around N2 level. Three years of Japanese at university in America was equivalent to 3 semesters here.

It is the combination of studying the concepts of a language and immersion that make up the key to master a language in my opinion. Therefore it also makes sense that you learned much more in Japan. I´m approaching N3 at the moment and started learning Japanese about 1.5 years ago (self studying)... still a long way to go :)

It would really help if the Japanese text had furigana, I cannot read all of the kanji and I cannot catch all of the words so it is not as useful for learning as it could be.

COWNDEN .Jason Well that depends. How much is alot of anime? I did the whole thing solely from the knowledge i have from watching anime too. I even picked up most of the proper use of grammar and know the variants of polite and casual speaking. Though this might be thanks to the estimated 500 animes i have watched

I only did the first question because I thought I was a beginner but the first one was easy. LOl

The translations of these sentences totally omit all the grammar structures...and there are a lot of those. Not very useful

listening part is always the easiest, in any language. it's the talking that we all strugle with. cut the "annoying" brit accent woman. completely unnecessary. we r not anglophiles (brits uber-alles )here. you should instead use a real japanese person. mostly geeks and nerds here (except me) into anime and manga (ie. adults who are mentally under developed ;) ).

Most of the translations are dead wrong. Dislike.
