{508} ESR in Capacitor Equivalent Series Resistance

Ғылым және технология

in this video i explained ESR in Capacitor Equivalent Series Resistance -Explained How to Calculate ESR, ESR is an equivalent resistance value which is provided by a capacitor while working in a circuit, capacitor provides capacitive reactance, which is inversely proportional to the capacitance value and the applied frequency. as the frequency will increase, capacitive reactance will decrease. capacitive reactance measuring unit is ohms. the ESR value basis on the dissipation factor and the XL capacitance reactance. the operating temperature is directly effective on dissipation factor.
to test quality of a capacitor it is necessary to use ESR meter, it applies a 100KHz test signal to the capacitor under test and measures the resistance value provided by the capacitor in response of the high frequency signal. as the ESR will high than the maximum ESR value at that test signal which is mentioned in the product datasheet, then the capacitor will be rejected,

    Hello, I'm having trouble with my Mega 328 tester, it is not giving the correct uF, on a small capacitor, its reads 9665 uF with no decimals places, however ESR is good, 0.38 ohms. To verify with my multi meter, my capacitance reading is 9.94uF on that device. Capacitor is made by CapEon 10uF 50v SY 105 C. What do you think, Mega328 is known to give false readings like that? To clarify, when I ohm the cap with the multi meter, sometimes the numbers climb up with more resistance, other times its showing O.L. on the screen. Hmm, a little confused.

  • @HaseebElectronics

    @HaseebElectronics

    sometimes these digital testers make false readings, because these testers test the components with frequency. and if the software of the microcontroller is corrupted then it makes false readings. it may produce any false reading. specially charged capacitors are dangerous for these types testers. a little voltage may damage it

    Why ESR is really matters? How the ESR is going to affect our circuit? If the ESR is really low at certain frequency, then if we operate the circuit at particular frequency, wheather the capacitor will get short ( for e.g ESR value is 0.1 mohm at 100 hz, if we operate system at 100 Hz, then our capacitor will act as resistor and it will short circuit??). Can help me to understand Thanks in advance

  • @aviandragon1390

    @aviandragon1390

    Жыл бұрын

    Low ESR is desirable. Think of ESR like the internal resistance of a battery. High ESR means the capacitor will not be able to charge and discharge efficiently. This becomes more important as the operating frequency increases or as the output current the capacitor must supply increases.

    ESR Nd Vloss are two of those bull shit parameters that have nothing to do with amateur electronics practices. Unless you are building equipment for outer space exploration or are a military contractor you will not need to be concerned with ESR. However it is good to understand the theory of it all. ESR affects the plate power dissipation high frequency power switching circuits like TV horizontal deflection circuits or computer power supplies. For the one person building a guitar amplifier is of no consequence. Capacitor value and leakage current are the parameters you should be concerned with.
