500HP Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX is an Evo's Worst Nightmare

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I wanted a Mitsubishi Eclipse SO badly during my teenage years - but quickly found out their unreliable reputation. Due to the tuner scene of the 90's and 2000's it's tough to find a good example. Thankfully this 500HP AMS built monster sure did the trick. The Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX is a car of a by- gone era - and this really shows. So what's it like driving a FAST 2G DSM? Let's talk about it.

I had a non-turbo in this exact same color. I was running low 15's at Numidia Dragway, it was good enough for me as a 17 year old. Could've probably hit high 14's with better tires and without the heavy rims, Wings West body kit and subs in the trunk. I had every bolt-on and mod imaginable on that thing and I was still a little slower than the turbos...😅. Couldn't get the turbo model because the insurance was insane. Summer of 2001, good times. My next car was a '98 Prelude which I still have, with less than 100K original miles. 🤘

It sucks that the 3rd gen got “nerfed” so much, it had the setup to be a great car with awd more than likely planned and a mostly bolt on upgrade from evo/2g parts… but with the evo coming to the usa I think they wanted to help sales for the evo so they took the eclipses turbos and awd and put a more of a driver comfort setup on it to make it less of a poster car if that makes sense

Also there are eclipse 1 and 2G in Europe and Japan. The export models have folding mirrors and amber turn signals in the taillights but are still LHD. Some trims are named differently, like the GS-T being the GT, And the GSX being the GSR-4.

We may not have got this in the UK, but we did have the Mitsubishi GTO 3 litre twin turbo which was quite a beast.

I have a fp red on mine and it’s the fastest spool for a street car. Hopefully will be running 10s next year. Mine is a 4g64/4g63t head combo so it gets up and moves like a train with the extra low end torque. Hopefully you can come review mine it’s one of the cleanest gsx’s in my state. It’s Saronno red also.

Eagle was a Jeep/AMC car brand , that Chrysler just inherited when they bought Jeep . It was actually around for quite a while under the AMC brand .

I had a 95 GST new. I babied it for 2 years, then started mods. I was lucky that mine was an early 95 with a block leftover from 1g, so I never had crank walk. When I finally sold the car in 2005, it had 150k miles on it with zero reliability issues and just over 400HP. To this day, the funnest car I've ever owned. I still miss it. Of course, I sold it to a kid who wrecked it. When he bought it from me, I told him to be careful with it, it's deceiving. It didn't have a door ding in it when he got it. Took him less than two months to total it.

Im the typical dsm owner with it on stands. I had 280 cams hx35 upgraded springs and slight porting with a polish in the head . hks cam gears, fic 1100s and it ran amazing and all until my oil pressure sensor vibrated out and lost the engine

Owned 5 first gens 20+yrs ago, racing around. Only 1 fwd, the rest were AWD. Which was awesome for launching on the streets. With a few bolt ons you were trouncing everything except vettes and Supras, and the occasional modded 300zxTT. But a few more bolt on's, injectors and a tune and you were in the 400hp territory till the trans blew, or a rod, then you'd rebuild it stronger, except for the trans. Unless you had extra money left over for a John Sheppard transmission. But the gearing in 2nd, 3rd and 4th was long and perfect for drag racing. 2nd gear in an AWD would get you to 68mph redline, 72mph in the FWD.... Days gone by..
