5000 Mile Road Trip in a Rivian R1T - We almost didn't make it!

We drove from Boulder Colorado to Key West Florida in our Compass Yelliow Rivian R1T, a 5,025 roundtrip journey.
On our way back, we almost didn't ran out of charge in the middle of Kansas!

    I have had problems with all of the charging companies. I have called them when there has been issues. They have been able to reset machines etc. they have been very helpful.

    Thanks for sharing your trip! Road-tripping in a non-Tesla EV is definitely not fully there yet. Coming from an older model S, and now having a Rivian, it's very clear that there's a big gap with the stations just not functioning at most of the charging stations. The amount of stations out there isn't that bad, but they aren't fully functional. Hopefully it'll get there.

    Cool trip! The boat car was awesome! I noticed you saying that the tap pay doesn't work on most of your stops at electrify but I notice when I hold my phone over the card swiper it works pretty much every time. Thanks for a great electric travel video! I love our Chevy Bolt! ⚡❤

    You should include the time for charging at each station. Your time is a cost included for owning a EV.

    I really enjoyed this video….very real world on what to expect…..might get 6KW or might get 200KW at a charger…..and then what to do if you don’t get what you expect 😬….the chargers are definitely the weak leak currently.

    Kwh is a measurement of how much energy you have - stored in your battery. Kw is a measurement of how much power / energy your vehicle can charge at. I know you are new to EV'S and I bet you have learned a lot about kwh and kw. Good video and nice Rivian R1T.

    Pressure Rivian to adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) and offer retrofits for customers like you. It's not fair that Tesla is offering up their great Supercharging network to any automaker who adopts NACS and Rivian is spiting their customers by ignoring that offer and continuing to punish customers with CCS1.

    Loved the chronicle of the round trip. Now that you have an EV you MUST educated yourself on the travel process. Here are some great KZread channels on charging and road tripping with an EV. Out of Spec (Kyle Conner), State of Charge and another good EV road trip App is Chargeway (which has a KZread channel that explains all). Safe travels 😀.

    What an incredible journey at a very reasonable charging cost. A gas or a diesel pickup would’ve cost quite a bit more money.

    Hey, I know this is a late comment but just wanted you to know that a charging station stating it can do 350kw does not mean Rivian can do it too. I believe rivian can go as fast as 220kw, this is because the battery is at 220v. It the voltage was higher then it can probably do more. I just had a road trip from LA to grand canyon. 140-200kw was around my speed, and keep it mind the charging is slower as the battery becomes fuller. You can probably see 200kw until 20-30% then the KW will drop to maybe 150kw -170kw depending on how consistent the charging is. Anyways you probably have already figured it out but incase you haven't this is just some information I want to share.

    Thanks for the video. Traveling by EV is still in it's infancy in the U.S. and it is a different mindset. You've proved that the long road trip can be done and that you just need to be willing to take your time for re-charge. It's a great compromise for not directly dumping fossil fuels. The charging network is a bad as it's going to be right now and is getting better.

    I'm sure there are other options for charging your truck on 30 amps but the Tesla mobile connector (200 bucks) and all the nema adapters would work nicely with the Rivian, you would also need something like a Teslatap to allow your Rivian to use the Tesla mobile connector.

    it's nice to see videos of people going on trips in EVs. I drive my 2018 Nissan leaf all over southern new england, which has a very poor charging infrastructure. the leaf only gets about 80-90 miles of range at highway speeds. there is NO range anxiety...it's nerve wracking knowing that dcfc's are at best half as reliable as gas pumps. even with two little boys in car seats I have managed to drive 32,000 in 24 months of owning my leaf. I love EVs, even though I could only afford a leaf with small battery

    You should run load on a circuit breaker at 80% of the CB current rating. A 50 A breaker should be run at a maximum of 40 amps.

    There are special 30A to 50A adapters built for EVs. The issue is that the RV adapters split the 120V to both of the side blades and the car only "sees" 0V. The special adapters connect one of the blades to neutral and let's the car charge at 24A but at 120V. I have one and they work well but are pretty slow

    Search for TT-30 to 14-50 EV adapter. There's a few out there. No guarantees it will work with the Rivian mobile EVSE but for sure it works on the Tesla ones. Only gives 3kW so it's kinda slow.

    Speed vs Range….your speed heading to Colorado was 82, anything above 65 really sacrifices range due to wind resistance. Great Video!

    The 30 amp campground outlet is just 110v. I don't know that there is any solution for charging at 30 amp on 110v. The tesla mobile charger support 20 amp 110v charging. The 30 amp to 50 amp adaptors just split the 110v to both post on the 50 amp plug. The RVs that use 50 amp don't actually use 220v, so this works as they just expect two 110v 50 amp circuts. For level 2 charging you need true 220 volts.

    Love Rivian and Tesla however road tripping and charging don't mix well. You got quite a few free charges and yet overall economy when compared to a gasoline counterpart was pretty comparable. I blame the kwh price gouging associated with many of these charging stations along with their inferior equipment.

    great video. just wanna make one note here for future videos. you keep saying the chargers are giving you 150 kwhrs (kilowatt-hours)or 6 kwhrs. those numbers are the power (energy over time) going into your battery pack, so that would be kilowatts, not kilowatt hours. if you charged at a constant 150 kilowatts for 1 hour you would have gained 150 kwhrs. the r1t is fully charged at 135 kwhrs. make sense?

    EV road-trip tips no one tells you: never drive the speed limit only drive about 60-65 if you’re in unfamiliar places and don’t know the chargers in the area. You’ll get better range and can save more time by skipping a charge even tho you’re driving slower ;)

    Why were you tripping so many breakers? A 50A outlet should be able to output 40A continuous without tripping the breaker and those mobile connectors should limit the charge to 40A. Does the Rivian let you adjust the amperage down to stop the breakers from tripping?

    Do you know the average comparable mpg you were getting? I think you mentioned your range was 300 miles per full charge. Would you have a guess how many miles you were getting the entirety

    Terrific video. We have an R1S being delivered next Oct-Dec. We worry about how big it is. When you're driving around Denver doing daily driving, does it FEEL like a big car..ie in parking lots, etc? We live in the mountains on a steep dirt road that is snow covered in the winter. How does your car handle the snow?

    Even if you’re at a 350 kW station, I believe the Rivian can only reach a charge speed of 220. Some EV’s can’t charge very fast due to their voltage system and owners should know their limitations and not clog up the 350 kW chargers. My Ioniq5 is quite fast but at the couple of times I’ve had a chance to use a 350 charger I got about 150 and 250 speeds respectively. And if my battery is cold or over 80% charged, then the charge speed goes way down and I should in those circumstances use the 150 station and leave the 350 open for someone else. We’re all learning and I appreciate your efforts and post

    Bought it on Amazon, "Rightline Gear Full Size Short Bed Truck Tent (5.5')." It's actually a bit too big for the R1T, but we made it work. We now have an iKamper Skyview Mini

    Great video. As more people make the switch, charging is going to only get better. One of my favorite replies to ICE defenders about range and charging availability is to say say " I know right, remember when gas cars first came out they all got 50 mpg and gas stations all popped up at once like weeds?"

    It’s not the 30 amp that’s the problem. You where trying to connect to a 30 amp 120 outlet. Not 240 volt 30 amp outlet. a nema 14-50 plug is 220-240 volts. Not 120. 120 has 2 wires. 240 has 3. If you had a ev charger that worked on 120 volts at 30 amps it would have been ok.

    All that time wasted waiting around for charging. I’d much rather spend the extra money on gas and save time to spend it where it truly matters ! Electric vehicles need to get down to 15 minute charging times and at least 500 miles of range before everyone will start buying them. Great video and nice Rivian, love the yellow colour. It looks like quite a practical vehicle.
