A very Keith Jarrett approach to a Chick Corea tune, especially with the long vamp ending. Very fine playing!

@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 well he said to have fun ! I noticed a few things..he like the relax his hands like Chopin thumb on the C then for finger on the C# As if to continue up the C# scale.. Also..he came into the dining room Where I was playing The manager Said to mem.he may request a quiet dinner!! But He just sat at a table in front of me..ate his his food and paused to say thanks as he left I of course thought my head would explode and l would fall on the floor..but Actually It was easier to play with him in the vicinity Finally he and l briefly spoke in a hallway and he talked about constantly recording ideas and his choices for capturing that. By the way everytimenl saw him walking around he had his laptop..except dinner Oh he did say he thought Stevie Wonder was the most creative keyboardist and he like Scriabin and was working on his music Thanks for asking

I learnt that song while taking Gary Burton's MOOC "jazz improvisation" through Coursera. (Or I should have, at least 😧) Thanks for sharing your studies!

Personally, I do not feel that the first two RTF albums were aimed at reaching out to a rock audience; they are both too steeped in the jazz and Latin traditions. However, the second RTF unit, which included White and Connors, was most certainly a point of departure - ie. Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy.

They definitely did get more rock-ish with the second RTF unit. At the same time, it's notable that the first unit didn't use swing 8ths. They used straight 8th notes at a time when young people wanted to hear that. The amazing thing is that they managed to do this without "selling out," because of the jazz and Latin connections.

@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 Well yes, I suppose, for the most part. But La Fiesta and Clarke's title-track from the second album use jazz-quavers extensively! As do certain tracks from bootleg recordings of live performances I have been lucky enough to obtain of the original RTF unit.

If your subject-matter is emphasising how Corea used this composition to bridge a gap towards rock music and jazz, then why was your demonstration in the style of a cocktail-pianist? I'm not being argumentative but rather just rather confused over your poor execution and inability to stay on track with the thread of this tutorial? Paul David Seaman

Hi Paul - thanks for your comment! I'm just presenting various aspects of the music, and then playing it as I hear it at the time. Probably not perfect.

@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 OK, fair enough; but being a tutor you surely want to provide you viewers with acurrate information? Otherwise you will be doing a dis-service to all, as well as showing yourself in a poor light.
