50 Years On: Chile’s Coup and its Aftermath

Half a century after the overthrow of the Unidad Popular’s democratic socialist government, we come together to explore the lessons from that political experience and the legacy left by nearly 17 years of ruthless authoritarian neoliberalism in the region. We will also reflect on the role of the U.S. in destabilizing the region and supporting Pinochet’s illegitimate government.
Additionally, this event aims to highlight the importance of international solidarity with workers and social movements. The news of the coup sent shockwaves to leftists across the world, including in the U.S. and East Germany. Activists, unionists, cultural workers, academics, and exiles emerged in this context as key protagonists in a multifaceted solidarity movement. They sought to amplify the voices of those suffering in Chile and challenge the human rights abuses perpetrated by the Pinochet regime.
