When I was 18 a doctor gave me a magazine and told me to read the article in it. The article was called addictive behavior. I read it but I paid it no heed. That was over 40 years ago and I will say my life sure would have been easier if I had got everything under control 40 years ago

A cheap shot at Rita Hayworth. She may have had a drink problem but her daughter Yasmine Aga Khan finally put some preasure on her mother to seek help for drinking only to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease which had been misdiagnosed for many years thus giving her the appearance of being a drunk. You didn't mention anything about that!

Judy Garland was forced by the studio and producers of the Wizard of Oz to take uppers so she work long and grueling hours on set with 3-4 of sleep for which she was given downers to combat the effects of the pills she was forced to take throughout the day. Factoid: Shirley Temple was originally slated for the role of Dorothy. However, when it was discovered she couldn't sing, Garland got the role even though she was thought to be too heavy, resulting in her being given diet pills. Such a sad story, a childhood snuffed out by pure greed and unspeakable cruelty.

Of all these victims of overindulgent lifestyles, Lee Marvin had as much a reason to do so likely more than most. His experiences during WWII, was fraught with any number of reasons to hide within the confines of a bottle. I realize that many soldiers coming home with such trauma found other ways to move on, but there was no counseling offered even remotely close to that of today. He was always close to his beloved Marine Corps

You need to get the facts straight on Audie Murphy. He never drank. He was prescribed a medication to help him sleep which was very addictive and had severe side effects that could be interpreted as being drunk. It's bad enough to falsely label anyone an alcoholic or drug addict but doubly so when that person is a war hero. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

Judy Garland's story is most tragic. While filming The Wizard of Oz, she was constantly forced by executives to keep taking these kinds of pills in order to keep her line. her worst trauma if possible was that the dwarfs in the movie would constantly put their hands up her skirt while pretending that it wasn't them. Judy became so frazzled by this constant sexual harassment, that Margaret Hamilton who played the Wicked Witch of the East, viciously complained about how Judy was being treated. Ms. Hamilton who had once been a school teacher was appalled at how Judy was so brutally treated. you can see if you watch The Wizard of oz how traumatized she would become when the little people were around her constantly looking around

He lost his life in a drinking game against 5 sailors where he drank 8 imperial pints (so a little over a gallon in total), 12 shots of rum, almost a full bottle of Jack, and some more shots of wodka and Courvoisier before collapsing after an armwrestling match at the age of 61. He should be number one in my book. His interviews were always hilarious as well.

The Lee Marvin story makes me think of my Dad who was also a decorated purple hearter Veteran from WW II. After which he rebuilt his life. He used to recite a line from his favorite song 'I'm tired of livin and so scared of dying' What else you can do? There was a line from the Movie the 'Shawshank Redemption'. It goes something like, 'You either get busy living or get busy dying'. I say, 'nurse your wounds and move on.'

Alcoholism is horrible. When I was 12 years old, I woke up to the sound of our house doorbell ringing and ringing, I figured that it was my parents coming home from the Bar. But it was two San Jose Police Officers. They asked me if I had anyone besides me that was older in age for them to speak to, So I said Yes and went and woke up my 16 year old sister and followed her to the front door. They needed to speak to her alone so I was asked to leave the room. I did just that and returned to my hallway by my bedroom. Only to see my sister heading to me three minutes later to get my 15 year old brother. So she could tell my 15 year old brother that my Father had been killed as my mother drove home from a Bar. My mother spent 3 months in Santa Clara Valley Medical facility. Where they saved her life. There are four of us children that lost our Loving father that horrible day. My 9 year old brother has been in Prison most of his life. He is now living in another County and is finally getting to live his life. TKW

A really interesting video, and surprising how many of the bigs stars managed to put in wonderful films while having alcoholism. However some of the photos don't always match the star subject.❤❤

These Iconic award winning artists gave their best performances fuelled up with alcohol. It's a fact alcohol can make one unstoppable but over indulgence has the flip side of all that is out of character with actions they regret or have no recollection of😅😅. Honestly naming and shaming is sad. No one is perfect I'll raise a glass to their memory here's mud in your eye.

40 - 60 percent of alcoholics have an undiagnosed mental health problem which they are attempting to self medicate with alcohol. Than is a fact I learned in rehab. 😅 Finally getting a diagnosis has allowed me to stay sober for twenty years. 😅

My father was a violent alcoholic. He once held a gun to my mother's head for 24 hrs when I was a baby. He also beat me when I was about 2-3 until my mother left him. I truly hated him. My Mother left him and remarried when I was about 4. I always felt sorry for my Mom. Her second marriage lasted 60 yrs and 2 more kids later. She was finally happy then.

I'm also from a family of alcoholism & drugs. Aside from the fact I don't care for the taste,I wouldn't touch any of that stuff for anything. It has ingrained in me a strong lack of sympathy for drunks or addicts. Sorry but if that's so terrible of me that's too bad. Damage goes beyond the alcoholics liver or other physical problems. Don't cry to me,don't want to hear it.

Many of them strike me as bipolar… self medicating with alcohol. Some with some with very manic tendencies. Bipolar’s have a creative superpower. Not to underestimate the effects of ptsd from military service that many of their generation silently bore😢

Self-medicating with alcohol is a bad idea for controlling or treating bipolar, but Bipolar 1 is 60% co-morbid with addiction. Yes, their creativity may be significantly greater than average. Bipolar doesn't help creation, but the same part of the brain that causes bipolar, if it's large enough, could also enhance creativity.
