In the music shop there’s an album called 'The Smashing Turnips' which is a reference to the band 'The Smashing Pumpkins'- a big influence on Bryan Lee O'Malley

“There are Warp Pipes on the map. Do you have those in Canada?” No but that would be very convenient. But I don’t like the idea of entering a Warp Pipe and coming out the other side into a giant body of water.
I feel like there are a lot of Castlevania nods in Wallace's shop, too. You can see what looks like Holy Water (the little cross-adorned rosary thing hanging next to it kinda gives it away) on a shelf in the upper left corner, and the Axe and Knife hanging on the right side wall behind Wallace.
This video makes me interested in Scott Pilgrim and both the game and comics. Sounds like something I’d enjoy

It's one of my favorite video games. (best at 2 or 3 players, the screen can get too busy at 4) - The movie is one of a kind, and easily my favorite. The comics are the best part. But be warned it is more about bad relationships than good ones.

9:48 This is reference to SoulCalibur series, Ivy use a Sword that could be used as whip
@Senordisastermaster
3 жыл бұрын
It can be both. The transformation itself is due to the movie having a whip sword, which then was used for the game, being based on Ivy from Soul Calibur. But then they added Castlevania references as well. On top of her last name being Richter and having a whip, her animation is pretty much the classic Castlevania whip strike. :)
@Dzumeister
3 жыл бұрын
Whip Swords are in Castlevania, too
@Senordisastermaster

@@Dzumeister SoulCalibur and its Whip Sword appeared before CV's first whip sword, so it's kind of a non factor. Plus, it's not like the whip sword was ever that iconic in CV. If anything, even that was a nod to Soul Calibur as well.
@catriamflockentanz
3 жыл бұрын
@@Senordisastermaster We cannot know what was referenced there if we don't ask the person who made the reference in the first place though - Especially given that Whip Swords were in Dungeons & Dragons before Soul Calibur existed so it may as well be a reference to that.
I loved this video! One thing I think a lot of people may not realize is that many of the Toronto locations in the game are based on real places, and drawn from reference photos. (Sneaky Dee's, Shockwave Records, Second Cup, Lee's Palace, TTC Streetcars & more) I was living in the neighborhood where Stage 1 takes place at the time of SP's release, and it was a real trip, playing a game set literally outside my door.
4:52 I wish they would use this again in a modern Mario game. Its a great mechanic that has alot of untapped potential and was way ahead of its time in Mario 2. I love that they weren't afraid of bizarre concepts with more mature underlying themes, like inter dimensional travel.

It's far more obscure than everyone else's so I'm not surprised it got glossed over, but I'm almost certain that Ramona's victory animation is a reference to accessing the item box from Terranigma complete with jumping headfirst into her bag. I mean, maybe it's something else, but it looks a lot like it.
EASTER EGG! In the first level’s shopping district, on the windows of the no account video store you can see posters that have crude versions of the second, third, and fifth Scott pilgrim books cover art.
Also, the Negascott is a reference to when you have to fight your shadow in Double Dragon 2, his move set is almost identical to that boss, especially that jumping knee strike that sends you across the screen.
@American-Zero

Beat the game with Wallace...his ending has him casually sitting in a big boss chair. That's a reference to Streets of Rage where you become the boss.
The Elves from Golden Axe are in the forest level and they drop coins when you hit them (they'd drop magic bags in Golden Axe)
You missed some references. The green dino suits are a reference to Secret of Mana and a boss fight shortly before you learn to use water magic in the game and the robot one at 12:00 mirrors the final boss of Donkey Kong 94 (Game Boy).
@lilsunny7399

Actually if anything they look more like the dinosaurs from bubble bobble. or old newgrounds flash games. They don't really look like biting lizard.
In the park level, you will encounter little guys who look like Link and drop coins when hit. Not only do they look like Link, they behave much like the gnomes from the Golden Axe series (who drop magic jars when hit).

Yep, final stage of double dragon 2.
So glad they brought this back!! One of my favorite games just disappeared! River city Ransom was one of my favorite games on NES and the amount of Easter eggs made me appreciate this game even more.
The bit just before the second Gideon boss where there's damaging blobs dripping down is also a Mega Man 2 reference from a section of Wily's castle just before you fight him.
just maxed out my scott and beat the game today!
In Wallace's Mystery Shop, isn't the cross in the background the cross from Castlevania? And the box under the Blue Shell reminds me of the boxes from Crash Bandicoot
Oh wow, so many references hidden in plain sight right in my face all along. Thanks!
In the Dragons Den section there are hanging lights from the Super Mario Bros 3 castle.
11:35 there is also a poster of Angel Island from Sonic 3 at that level, it can be seen at the intro of the game too
Good stuff guys! Love the content.
Awesome job, Zion! I hope you realize how much we Nintendo Life subscribers love your videos.
The character info box in the shop is the same as the Earthbound character info box
Dunno if anyone s thought of this or I could be wrong but during Todd's fight whenever he brings up a barrier to block, could be a reference to the psi effect animations from the Earthbound/Mother series

Ooh yes!
In the background of the Subspace stage for Stage 1, you can see the Flutter from Mega Man Legends (which was Mega Man Volnutt's ship) In addition, the mid-boss of Stage 5 "Super Fighting Robot" references Mega Man's tagline from the Ruby-Spears cartoon show, although the boss itself actually fights like Final Sigma W from Mega Man X5.
Living in Canada, I find pipes from Mario all the time. They are just everywhere. I hate it when a Bob-Omb just randomly wanders into houses, causing mass destruction to all of Canada.

How can I apply to write reviews for Nintendo life and possibly work there? I'm really intrested since I'm really good at writing reviews.
The dragons at 10:50 look an awful lot like Bub from Bubble Bobble.
In the final final boss fight, Gideon has an attack where he slices the ground, and a shockwave flies at you. This could be nothing, as we see attacks like this all the time, but due to the similarities, I'm hell bent on calling it a reference to "Tales of Symphonia." Specifically the attack "Demon Fang" that does the exact same thing, albeit at a slower speed.

You can roll right through it if you have the dodge, and by that point you've probably leveled up enough to have the dodge.
Just like in the movies good pick for the music in this video
food pills are a long standing aspect of sci-fi stories, not a Dr Mario reference.... Roxy's whip sword could also be a reference to Soul Calibur's Ivy Valentine the owls in Zelda might not attack but the ones in Scott Pilgrim might actually be a reference to the Cuccos from Zelda
3:27 yes we do
I am surprised many people don't see the reference of todd evil ex #3. Its when his arm get really big and cover that entire area its from KOF 2002 character name K9999 one of his special move called "power is.....losing control.....UWAAAAHH!!!" I played way to much King of fighter as a kid and when I saw that I thought it was amazing.
Oh there's one that you missed well... actually two the overworld sprite in Scott Pilgrim references the Pokemon overworld sprite and an enemy wears a red cap,red clothing,and baggy blue Jeans referencing Red from Pokemon
A majority of the shops on the first level are based off of real stores in Toronto, such as the music store being based off of the music store sonic boom
Speaking of cameos the guy that comes out with the movie scene clacker in stage 2 is Edgar Wright.
The Blood Drops in the final stage is Mega Man 2 Cross and Axe in Wallace's shop are Castlevania I wanna say Ramona's hammer is kind of a reference to Amy's hammer in the Sonic series So many references

Medusa's heads
On Stage 3, you can see Clash at the Demonhead posters with a blonde Envy. Reference to the movie.
"Never Ending Fantasy" is also the name of a song & album Anamanaguchi had released around the same time. The same band that made the music for the game.
Todd's arm attack is a reference to Tetsuo from Akira.
2 More Easter Eggs - Right before 12:27 time stamp here is another reference to when Kirby and Meta Knight first meet ( Kirby's Adventure & Nightmare in Dreamland ). Subspace 5:02 timestamp here on the FAR left is a Pac-man reference to the "kill screen / level 256 / split level screen". Also 7 Eleven in the store with the Angry Sun (the 3 lines on the wall)
In the Flying Tengu, you sometimes will see something that looks like an original game boy stuck into the walls.
The chace portion of the game before the guitar battle reminds me a section in streets of rage 2 or 3 were your chanced by some machinery and you have to break walls to get to the end. Edit: just checked. Im referring to the bulldozer level in streets of rage 3
Can anyone explain the first monster/boss thing in the first couple seconds? I've played the whole game and never noticed that thing.
Beating this game by yourself is hell

Disagree.
3:28 is without a doubt a reference to the opening of Megaman 2.
Zion is so excited
One thing you forgot to mention is that in level 4,after Roxy cuts the train in half,you can see the thermostats look just like Nintendo gameboys.
what about the spin jump unlockable move for some of the characters? or the blood cheat?
Awe you didnt mention that the way the Big Robot destroying the city and walking onto screen is just like the 1st mini boss in Contra: Hard Corps
At 7:30 (The Frying Tengu), the thermostats (or whatever they are) on the wall are very Game Boy-inspired. Gray, brick-shaped, speaker slats in the corner, green screen. And plenty other sweet, sweet references in the comments section, even a few I didn't catch! This whole game is like a giant love letter to gaming - it's like candy for the soul!
Im convinced that Gideons first and second phase is a direct reference to Sephiroth from final fantasy 7 I mean in the first phase he uses one wing to fly around (it might be two but I'm pretty sure its only one) and will drop meteors on you, sound familiar? And of course the second phase bears a striking resemblance to safer sephiroth
9:56 That looks more like when you go to a Castle in Mario 3 and Toad tells you to find the magic wand.
I like this game even more and more
What about the k9999 refference from the king of fighter 2001?
I remember watching someone explain all these references when it first came out on Xbox.
During your megaman references you forgot the stage leading up to final Gideon with the red acid drips is clearly another megaman 2 reference. As thats how the area right before alien Wiley is. Great vid though!!👍👍

This is a good list but the car is actually goes back further than SF2 to Capcom's Beat Em Up Classic Final Fight. (Which also is canon and takes place in the SF setting)
So many double dragon references missing. An entire level of Double Dragons was lifted and put into this game. Mix in some Ken and Ryu love for the same level too. You got a lot of references here. But this game is a deep mine and it goes a LOT deeper.
Can’t believe you mentioned the flag when Gideon’s place collapses but missed the fact that that entire scene is a megaman reference lol

What about the secret Mr. Chau fight? It's clearly an Akuma from Street Fighter II reference .

I would agree but that fight seems more like the bison fight from alpha 3
Carrying and using the oversized 'Key' item is a Kirby Return To Dreamland reference.
Another winter is the best change my mind
The item in Wallace's shop called Bionic Arm is probably a reference to the Capcom game Bionic Commando
also when scott gets hit with or by fire enemies his entire body is engulfed in flames like the animation in street fighter 2 also the opening may be a reference to SF Alpha 3s opening
masterpiece
The coin blocks in subspace, when fully exhausted, have the same design as in Super Mario World, except upside down, giving the appearance of a "sad face" (they even complete this look by giving the design a mouth which the original didn't have)
I'm not a very attentive person so I overlooked 90% of these references even after 2 playthroughs (on my third now). So thanks, This video was super cool, so many awesome references I didnt notice.
You forgot to mention Todd’s screen clearing attack is the same attack that Venom can do in Marvel vs Capcom 2.

@@KaiKrimson56 I literally only see the scene from Akira where Tetsuos arm explodes outwards.
The Giant Robot the twins use is called Super Fighting Robot a reference to the ruby spears cartoon opening or Mega Man. Nega Scotts special projectile is a clear reference to the Hadoken.
That spinning kick is actually also from River City Ransom, not from Street Fighter. The twin bosses towards the end (also the 2nd to last boss like the twins in the Scott Pilgrim game).
The name of the twins robot "Super fighting Robot" is a reference to mega man, cause on the cartoon and video game, he is known for that name as well
Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but there is another reference to Castlevania in the game. After Gideon absorbs you, there are pairs of snaked haired heads that come at you while youre running along the subspace highway? part of the boss battle, before the technodrome part
You missed the fact that during the first battle with Gideon, his tackle sprite has him turn into a figure with one wing, a reference to Sephiroth from FFVII. Also, Gideon flashing when invincible could be a reference to the star power-up from Mario.
I love this game I used to play with my little sister all the time and rn trying to play with freind but game keeps kicking us out the missions I hope they fix it soon so we can play together
I just need a command to get up faster, or a C-up like in streets of rage so you don't stay on the floor forever
Maybe I misheard but I could have sworn that was a double dragon reference from the third game being able to do a jump spin kick. Either way it's still a nice homage.
actually I believe "Never ending Fantasy" is a reference to Anamanaguchi (who did the soundtrack) their first full length album is called "Endless Fantasy". not a final fantasy reference!
@B00Radl33
3 жыл бұрын
Anamanaguchi could easily have been an influence. But in context Never Ending Fantasy is listed next to Speedy the Porcupine, and Bionic Arm. Two easy to spot references to first generational video games. (Bionic Comando, and Sonic) Now I just need to figure out how Ambrosia and Tlaloc's feast fit in...
What about the Edgar Wright lookalike in the stage 2 film set?
Also, the skeleton guys in the Halloween Party level resemble Tom Guycot, a villain from Clash At Demonhead. He was kinda like Sans long before Sans was a thing. He was also this inspiration for Lynette Guycott's name.
I always thought that the overworld map was more like Super Mario Bros. 3.
an item in Wallace's shop is "bionic arm" its a little vague, but with a name like that, Bionic Commando?
7:28 It's more like: Da-da-da-daaaaaaaaa..
