When I was in boot camp with the air force, we had night fire drills and used tracer rounds. I loved the way they ricocheted off the hills the way they did. It gives you an idea of truly how fast they are spinning when they leave the barrel.

Back in the days, when i was in the french miltary, i shot with an AA-52 ( 7.62 NATO french machine gun) at the range. Almost HALF of the 50 tracer bullets i shot did the EXACT same thing : a straight (or slightly curved) vertical ricochet up to 50 meters in the air. Wasn't expcting that at all.

+Charles William I used to say the same thing to people when they said they saw a UFO. I don't do it anymore, because I saw one. However the thing I saw was a black triangle, with 3 white lights at each corner, with a red strobe going back and forth, in the middle. It made no noise, it was about the size of a football field, and was about 500 feet above my family and I, going about 35 mph. And was doing weird criss-crosses with its lights. Then a major light appeared, and WHAMO!. The thing jetted at super speed and disappeared. I don't think this was an alien craft. Because it was being followed by 2 F-16s. Which appeared like they were escorting it or something. I used to live in Southern Illinois where all that crazy UFO shit used to happen. Look up the TR-3B craft. It looked just like that. South western Illinois, across from Saint Louis Missouri, is a flight path used by the Airforce. Middle Missouri has B-2 stealth bombers stationed there as the main headquarters for all B-2s. Whiteman AFB is the only permanent base for the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. Whiteman can launch combat sorties directly from Missouri to any part of the globe, engaging adversaries with nuclear or conventional weapon payloads. That is a direct flight path west of Scott air force base. And the thing was coming from Scott AFB Illinois, going in the direction to Whiteman AFB Missouri. So, that's why I believe this thing is just a new stealth bomber, currently in secret. The same secrecy they used when creating the B-2. But it is pretty crazy to see something like that. And does make you second guess about things.

Great reminder that bullets don't just disappear when you shoot them

@@caveymoley You can get close with rules of thumb if you ignore air resistance. 7.8 + 6.7 km/sec LEO + exit burn to jupiter gravity assist. So 14.5 km/sec, but with air resistance, especially starting at that speed in the troposphere its probably fast enough to plasmize? (turn into plasma) copper and steel. IE impossible for the projectile in question. The reason that doesn't happen to rockets is because they are going alot slower in the lower atmosphere since they continue to accelerate for like 10 to 20 minutes (instead of miliseconds in a gun barrel) and gain most of their total velocity in space.

tracer rounds reveal the origin of the firing point to the enemy. i had the idea of delayed-ignition tracers which only illuminate a couple of seconds after being discharged, so the firer can see where they are landing but the target cant detect the point of origin so easily.
