FYI. Central Wisconsin, Merrill Wisconsin rural area, the last of brother's hummingbirds left a few days ago. He is very rural with no other feeders around him. I witnessed just how many hummingbirds he is able to attract and it is above 50. He has multiple feeders that keep him busy. This is no accident as he has been feeding them for years.

Planting for the birds is a great idea. There was a small ornamental tree outside my window which had berries the birds liked. The cedar waxwings would stop by in fall and spring. The robins would eat the berries when a spring snow covered the ground. House finches also came by and picked at the berries leaving behind a hollowed out skin. I felt fortunate that someone had planted that tree many years ago.

One bird that I look forward to seeing in the fall are juncos. They show up in my area (southern Ontario) in late October, and will usually stay until April. I love to see them "double scratching" for seed in the snow that other birds have spilled from the feeders. They're such tough little characters!

I'll never forget hearing noise in my backyard after I moved into my home. So I went out to look and there was a large number of turkeys eating something planted back there. I was so excited. Now after all these yrs, it just normal. They obviously nest nearby. I just watch my Finches, Cards, Jay's and Sparrows busy at my feeders. They should be thrilled. I have plenty of clean feeders and birdbaths! I saw more hummingbirds to my delight this year, but I also planted deck plants in pots to attract them and 3 feeders for them as well! Love love love! 🥰 Thanks for sharing, Lesley!

I have been watching for the return of my grosbeak couple to come see us for a few days. I named the male Henry and his wife Henrietta. He is so impressive! I did get to see Henry just once in the Spring migration north. I keep listening for his voice and look for him too when I can. My health issues keep me from enjoying sitting outside for very long, and my window is hard to get to and to look out to the feeder. My many Northern Cardinals are my favorites. I too love the blue jays...always have been in love with them! As a kid I got my share of pecks on my head sneaking a glance high in the blue jay nests! And a tail feather was an absolute treasure to find and collect. Thank you for taking time to teach us! I am going to watch this video more than once or twice.

Yeah! You mentioned Hawk watching! For the past few days I've been going to Miller State Park in Peterborough, NH. There's a Raptor Observatory there right on Pack Monadnock and it's a spectacular view. I've seen hundreds of broad-wings, red-tails and numerous falcons and accipeters in the past 3 days. It's been a splendid reprieve. They released a rehabilitated broad-wing, a red-tail and a merlin yesterday. It was beautiful and very emotional. Anyway, I absolutely love your videos Lesley. You inspire us all! Happy birding ❤🦅🐦🕊

Here in SE Pennsylvania, the Grackles and Cowbirds take over from April to July. They decimate the feeders and the Cowbirds lay their eggs in the Robin's nests. I really don't care for them because they bully the other birds. The robins and blue jays left in July, but the blue jays just returned. Soon the Chickadees and Titmouses and Juncos will be back by October. Once that occurs, cold weather is just around the corner! Thanks for sharing your video!

In Austin, TX grackles are a year-round nuisance. You can't even sit at an outdoor eatery table without them trying to steal food from your plate. They fill power lines in great flocks, make a great deal of noise, and poop on cars, which you have to wipe off immediately so it doesn't leave permanent stains. Such opportunists! Sadly their numbers aren't in decline as are those of more desirable species.

I spotted an American red Breasted Robin and a Blue Jay (my favorite bird thus far) poking around for food around a tree beside a parking lot today. It's pretty rare to see either due to the automobile noise and people shooing them away. It's always nice to see and hear our wee feathery friends in a sea of concrete and an angry car horns lol.

The last of our migrants are passing over in the night here in Western Oregon-still a few Swainson’s Thrushes calling in the early morning when we get up to let the puppy out. I always feel sad to hear them go but the geese are starting to arrive and lots more ducks are showing up! And I heard a White-throated Sparrow yesterday. In my environment (my home), Cooper's hawks will perch on my neighbor's huge maple tree, and there will be no more birds at all, except for very nervous and hiding house sparrows, a couple very nervous downys, and some years a very nervous red bellied woodpecker. This spring, I noticed my warm climate visitors come in all at once, and our relationship picked up exactly where we left off. So nice to see them after missing them for four months. Especially thinking of mourning doves, blue Jays, and house finches. I often wish I lived out in the woods.

Another sad event. This morning I’ve heard mourning doves in the backyard making unusual an violent movements . I’ve looked outside the window and a black outdoor cat grabbed one of the mourning doves. It was two late for me to try to save it. This is another TABOO topic nobody dares to talk about. The problems feral & outdoor pets are causing to birds and wildlife in general. In my opinion cats are unnecessary luxury items that are only damaging nature. I hope you take some time to study this topic.

Great video! I'm looking forward to the dark eye juncos. The first time I seen them was last winter, I started feeding the birds last spring and really started paying attention to them. I remember it had been a pretty bleak fall, once all the singing stopped and alot of my birds left, around mid Aug, it took alot of my joy with them. Then one morning in October I looked out the window (it was still kind of dark yet) and there were 6 birds hopping down the hill in my back yard heading over to the food. I thought what are those? How cute! So I guess you could say that their little hops, pulled me out of my bleakness. It was so adorable and the more I watched there more I fell in love with them. They sound like little jed i's with their call. It was so cute. I'm waiting for there return. I ended up with a pretty big flock, maybe 20 or more would come everyday 😊 another great video, as per usual. 😊 I had a brown thrasher stop by me on spring, and one stop by last week on his way south.

Great video. Reminds me of why I love this time of year. I’m in Tennessee and I’m getting lots of warblers right now. Today, I saw Tennessee, Bay-breasted, Black and White, Black-throated Green, Chestnut-sided, Kentucky, and American Redstart warblers, all at my backyard bird pond. I’ve found that providing a water feature with moving water is a great way to attract the warblers as well as other birds. Had my first Swainson Thrush arrive this week and I’m waiting on the Rose-breasted Grosbeaks to arrive soon. Winter residents for me here include song sparrows, juncos, hermit thrushes, and, when I’m lucky, some purple finches. It’s fascinating to think about how they all shift around over the months and the incredible journeys many of them make.

I live in Columbia, South Carolina. I took a walk down my the Congaree River downtown. Columbia is a small city with lots of green area so we still get the little Warblers as they pass by and I've found that the river is a good place to find them. I saw many of the resident birds like Carolina Chickadees, Northern Cardinals and Tufted Titmouse. I did get some good pictures of Black and White Warblers, Northern Parula and Yellow Throated Warbler. I was so happy to see those guys. In that area I've also seen Painted Buntings and Prothonotary Warblers, but they've all pretty much left. The peak time for all the rare Warblers to pass through is the beginning of October and I can't wait for a chance to photograph them as I only started taking pictures back in May.

Just set up three feeders. Before I set them up, the woods were almost silent. Within a couple of days I've started seeing black capped chickadees, nuthatches, titmouse, northern woodpeckers, goldfinches, and a few sparrows. I'm starting to hear blue jays in the woods, so I'm sure I'll be seeing them soon. No cardinals yet but past experience says they'll show up before it snows.

I've noticed that we have had a huge decline in finches come to our feeder...I would love so much to have many feeders. I'd love to have one high up in front of my second story window...and fix the window so that I could put the seeds out for them and they could come visit me. My dear Sam and his mate Mary often wake me up in the morning, and will call to me if a stray cat or if there's a hawk circling. Oh I love our chickadees and they are sooo smart! Our little watch dogs! So sweet too. We have had so many babies this summer, and the juveniles are getting so big that it can be hard now for me to tell my named birds from their offspring. But I can always count on Sam to come see mama when I call him. He also will get on the branch that is on level with my window to tell me goodnight in the evening also. I talk too much, but you bring out so many interests to me. Sorry Leslie. xo

In NE Illinois recently I’ve seen a Great Blue Heron, an Egret, white breasted nuthatches (red ones left). In the Fall and Spring I get Sharp-Shinned and Red-Tailed Hawks, purple headed Grackles, & Cowbirds to name a few. I have year round Cardinals, Blue Jays and Sparrows that have a patch of gray on the top of their heads, am not sure if they’re a hybrid or just European sparrows. I saw a Red-Start once. I’d like to see any kind of warbler, they are rare here near the city. Indiana Dunes State Park actually tracks bird migrations with radar. Lights Out Chicago is a program to prevent window strikes with tall buildings during migrations.

Here in Tennessee we have lots of turkeys. More than once I've had to stop to wait for a big group of them to cross a street. Until I moved to somewhere with wild turkeys, I didn't realize that the males don't usually walk around with their tail feathers up in a fan like in pictures. I've only seen them do that a couple of times.

This time of year my eyes are looking to the sky a lot. My buddy's the Sandhill Cranes here in the UP of Michigan are grouping and soaring in the sky looking for that ride south. I do love those birds. And at the same time while searching the sky I see groups of hawks and others riding the winds to wintering grounds. It is kind of a bummer ...but I will soon focus on the new arrivals here for the winter and await the cranes return in the spring

I know most these birds migrate at night but as the sun comes up you can see them sitting on the wires or seeing Sandhill cranes fly over still. I think its really cool.

Visitors to my tree include humming birds, black-capped chickadees, goldfinch, tufted titmouse, cardinals, downy woodpeckers, house finches, carolina wren, sparrows, blue jays, and more . You reminded me that I will see Juncos again in the fall/winter. In Southern Oregon I only see resident birds. They move around areas for food ... Juncos and White Crowned Sparrows are resident birds. They come down from higher up in the area, usually in October. A pair of Spotted Towhees wintered over for several years. Talk about characters, A hawk passing by, caused panic in the yard. The Towhees made about three giant leaps across yard and went Head First down a Snoball bush. Lol
