50% AIRCRAFT MAIDEN FLIGHT - Unfortunate Ending

Ойын-сауық

#PAU #SU26 #crash
Thanks Nick for sharing your MASSIVE 50% Aircraft Details with us. This PAU SU-26 is an outstanding aircraft and did I mention that it's HUGE!!!!! The ending of the maiden flight is unfortunate. Although it wasn't really a crash it was more like a not so gentle touch down.

What a shame, although clearly tail heavy. The twitchiness of the elevator was very clear to see, and the fact that it had almost no glide says it all. Needs more weight in the nose. As they say, you'll fly a nose heavy aircraft several times, but a tail heavy aircraft only flies once. Thankfully not a total loss so I'm looking forward to seeing it repaired and back in the air again.

Thats incorrect for 3D aircraft. I have flown a 50% 3D airplane that balanced at the start of the ailerons and the only thing that told me thr CG was off was it didnt want to come out of a hover. But i fly enough to be able to handle that on a 3D airframe. Its not always true just remember that, thats an old saying from real military jet aurcraft. Not a new saying for RC's it only rings true in some airframes.

Just came across this. I left the hobby some 30 years ago. I would never have added weight like that to balance the model out, lighter the plane the better. Always moved the RC gear (battery/servos/receiver) to help balance. The aircraft looked unstable as soon as it left the ground and no surprise it dropped like a stone.

You did well to land it as such. I think a combo of less throw and move cg forward fpr next flight until you can at least get a feel of whats going on. Also im sure it wont be easy but maybe a ramp you could put fuse on with engine running to check its not leaning out. I know they shouldnt but most of mine do to sone extent. Also reccomend air dam in cowl to force air onto cylinder and a large exit for warm air to escape. All in all a shame for the damage but hope to see these minor issues resolved and the re maiden done.

After many years of RC disappointments myself, I have some advice that's appropriate here. When you build up this aircraft, you don't position the wing to the fuselage until you get close enough to load everything onto the air frame control surfaces, just tape them in place the engines, and then find that spot that the wing is to be all outside because of its airfoil and then you locate the fuselage on top the wing where it's balanced, you won't have any weight to add that forward and reverse balancing of the wing loose under the fuselage allows you to set the balance perfectly works like a charm and every time no matter the size of the aircraft all right good luck

so I agree with tail heavy, and with that pitching going on you could have caused the pick up in the tank to become airborne just long enough to starve the engine Once again, good luck just don't connect the wing to the fuselage until you know where it's perfectly balanced on the fattest part of the airfoil

@@edwinator46 as a master tech. That adage comes from the racing world. It is specifically from forged pistons and cranks. The process of forging metal of any kind inherently traps energy (atleast thats how i can explain it easier but is not 100% correct) That process makes the metal much stronger. However when forged metal especially pistons get warm they expand a hell of alot more than cast aluminum which is what your car has in it. With cast aluminum we set clearances very tight hence the reason for 0w-30 oil and such on modern cars. 0 being the wight of the oil at operating temperature and 30wt at freezing. But with forged pistons especially when it comes to two strokes if you start them and dont let them idle. The pistons will quite literally slap the cylinder walls when you increase the rpm. Catastrophic failure or cold seizing is a very common issue on race motorcycles and race cars with forged internals.

It's a shame, but it's an acrobat and the drive needs to be addressed. Aside from the misaligned centre of gravity, the engine power is lacking. A two-stroke engine is used and the exhausts make the power. There is a reserve. I wish you success.

If your going to do a airplane that big, why not just get a full size. Myself I like planes in the 6 ft ( 2 meter for you Canadians) range easy to move around, fly pretty well, not to expensive and loads of fun. I do respect everyone else's likes and Nick certainly is a good sport. I trashed a relatively expensive pattern plane about 30 years ago and gave up RC and got a real plane. It scared me, back to RC and loving it.

Hello Phil. Yea that's a valid point and a common question. I think it's 2 totally different worlds. With what we pay for some of these turbine aircraft many people ask that question. Why not full size. Many do both but it's a different experience flying a model from the ground and a full size.
