5-year-old Kid Takes The MRT Alone | On The Red Dot | CNA Insider

While helicopter parenting may be resulting from Singapore families choosing to have fewer kids, mum Serena Ong and dad Kai Keong are challenging their 5-year-old son, Nathanael, to be more independent. He is tasked to take his dad’s laptop from their home in Simei to dad’s office in Marina One all by himself.
#OnTheRedDot’s new series “Old Enough!” is adapted from the popular long-running series from Japan’s Nippon Television Network Corporation (Nippon TV) and showcases 9 determined preschoolers overcoming their fears and running errands on their own for the very first time.

I actually remembered my own experience when I was only 5 years old. I was waiying for my dad to fetch me that day but I thought I was impatient so that I couraged myself to go home alone. Like this kid, I was singing while walking along the railside. Luckily, most of the people there noticed me and known my father. They never held me home but I think that they just keep an eye on me so that I can go home safely. My mom felt anxious and frightened when she saw me downstairs.. asking me “who’s with you?” “Only myself. Papa didn’t fetch me.” She hugged me like there’s no tomorrow. I never forget about that day. I thought because of that, I can handle things independently.

I did this every week when I was 5 or 6. My parents had to work halfday on Saturday and being me, I am just so bored. So I took the bus and MRT from AMK to Pasir Ris by myself. The first time I did it, my parents cant believe me. I literally steal my dad's ezlini card (sorry dad, RIP). I left the house at 11.30am, so by the time my mother is home around 12.15pm, I didnt arrive at Pasir Ris yet. So she was so damn scared. I walked around quite a bit and I remember being helped by an old auntie in City Hall station. God bless you auntie. Only when I arrive in Pasir Ris, my grandma call AMK and told my mother, that I arrived, alone. I got the spanking of my life but also the deepest hug. The next weekend, and the other weekend and the rest of the other weekend, I just go out to Pasir Ris alone. 😁 That being said, it is super safe in Singapore. My mother always told me that, just ask people if you dont know anything. 11 out of 10 people will help. 😊 And the kid in this video, he is just adorable. I do believe kids should be taught to travel alone. But not to the northern suburbs. 😓 Sorry, I have nothing against Yishun, Sembawang or Woodlands. But ....... 😁 Just sorry.

Cute. Lucky a production crew followed him to keep him safe and that no paedophiles snatched him up. This is really possible in Singapore. My nephew is 6 and goes home from school riding mrt and bus. but only 2 stops of mrt and 1 stop bus, mostly he just walk from mrt to the house. Also my neighbor who has 2 year old kid can just cross the streets by herself without worries. Drivers in Singapore has the highest respect to pedestrians, that I can attest and its really safe. We also have soft spot for kids so we as adults has instinct to help a child when we see one wandering.
