0:00 - Intro
BAD:
1 - single configuration
So the Crew Cab and 5’2” bed you get here my be the only option, but it’s a good option and won’t alienate too many buyers
2 - Headlights in screen
The headlight controls are not on their own dedicated stalk or panel to the left of the steering wheel
The GMC Canyon come STANDARD with Automatic LED headlights
3 - No hybrid or deisel
But then we look at the 2.7 high-output engine we DO have and it makes more torque than the old diesel engines so you can tow more
AND it's been getting about 20 mpg combined so it’s still fairly efficient - all while not adding the complexity, weight, and headache of a hybrid system
4 - All window button
You’ve got a button to drop all the windows at once… but the button doesn’t bring them back up….
5 - Price
This one is tough to talk about because as of the recording of this video the Canyon is the most expensive midsize truck by some margin…it starts at $37k
-
GOOD:
1 - Truck stuff
You get a 5’2” bed no matter what
In that bed you can put up to 1640 lbs of STUFF
Assuming you’re putting it in a 2WD Elevation trim
And you can tie that STUFF down with a number of rails and hooks, etc.
You can even plug something in with the 110V outlet in the bed
But then if you want to tow, you can max out at a very healthy 7700 lbs..not bad
2 - The engine
And that’s because the Canyon ones standard with the high-output of the 2.7T 4 cylinder
This engine is a beast, here it makes 310 hp and 430 lbft of torque
3 - AT4X is a beast
This new Canyon introduces a new trims we’ve never seen before and it’s the sister trim to the Colorado ZR2 - it’s the AT4X…and it’s a beast
3 inches of lift total
10.7 inches of clearance
trim-specific 17 in beadlock capable wheels
33 inch Goodyear Wrangler M/Ts
“air down” mode
Multimatic DSSV
e-lockers on the rear AND front axles
trail camera mounted under the body with a washer
a host of skid plates to protect your underbody
rock sliders…nice
And with the revised bumpers and moving the front axle forward you’re looking at
37 degrees of approach - but the first edition will be a little less
24.5 degrees of breakover
And 25 degrees of departure
You’ve also got that revised front bumper, a brush bar, winch, and light bar
You’ve got an offroad performance display on your 11 inch center screen
AND you get a baja drive mode
4 - non AT4X offroady stuff
All Canyons also have a revised front axle that’s been moved forward to improve approach
You’ve also got LSDs as standard for the Denali and AT4
And since it’s 2023 we’ve got technology to help us out on the trails with an Offroad display.
That display shows Pitch & roll, altimeter, tire pressure, transfer case status and more
5 - Looks cool
Each Canyon looks cool and comes with the High and Wide treatment
Which means 2 inches of suspension lift and flared fenders front and rear
But if every truck gets a 2 inch lift does that mean no trucks have lifts?
You’ve also got an imposing front fascia with unique grile
And headlights that looks eerily similar to those on the Sierra
In your lower fascia you’ve got recovery hooks depending trim
And then around the side you’ve got squared off wheel wells…with amber markers in them
You’ve got trim specific wheels and tires
On each of the front doors you’ll get a trim badge
And then around back you get LED taillights standard as well
6 - Tailgate
First of all they’re all damped…except for the base Elevation trim
BUT in the tailgate you get a secret lockable cubby…and it has a drain built into it!
7 - Interior
The design is cleaner and more modern…sure it’s still very similar to the Colorado, but the dash materials, for example are nicer
There’s more leather, more stitching, less plastic - it feels more luxury tier than ever before
And it’s comfy too
8 - Tech
Doning your dash are two huge screens…and they’re both standard
One is for you fully digital cluster which is fantastic and customizable
It’s 8 inches on the elevation and AT4, but 11 inches on the Denali and At4X
The other is for your 11.3 in infotainment screen..which is also fantastic
google built in
wireless car play & android auto
360 cameras - 10 camera views (best in class)
trail cameras & underbody camera
wireless charger
class-exclusive HUD
9 - Luxuries
Heated and cooled seats
Lumbar controls for BOTh the driver and passenger
sunroof
heated steering wheel
10 - Rear seats
no, there are no heated seats back here
But the space is pretty decent

Downshift you don't need to go into the vehicle icon to turn on the lights. There is a dedicated icon at the top of the screen that takes you into the lights, one press and you're there.
Finally, somebody with common sense comments on the light switch. People act like they touch that switch as much as they do the shifter...

Still a stupid and unsafe decision on GM's part IMO. The headlight controls should be in a muscle memory no look location.
@Dusdaddy

@@carbonking53 I can't see it being unsafe and I definitely don't think it's "stupid". Different, yes, but I bet it will be more common. Like cruise buttons on the wheel vice a stalk, or push-button vice a key or rotary shifter vice a lever, etc.

@@Dusdaddy If you have to look away from your driving sight line to locate an on screen button then it's time you are not watching what's going on in front of you. Light controls on the stalk require no look. Just reach and rotate. It's very simple to see how on the stalk is safer.

Not having a physical button saves on cost which makes sense.
I think its worth mentioning regarding the headlights, that to flash your lights, you can still use the stalk but that is the only functionality available through the stalk for headlights.

The biggest down to me is lack of foot room for the driver and the uneven floor on the passenger side floor. I sell these, I have owned 3 of the past Canyons and they did not fix this problem with the new body. Great power and tech....
@largol33t1

For me, it's the ridiculous price gouging. Nobody sells these for under $45,000 and NONE are Denalis. I would have to buy it direct from GM and the price difference is a whopping $3,200! And that's AFTER I add the sunroof and multifunction tailgate. Those were the only two options I factored in with the truck in TWO wheel drive. Ridiculous. I paid $11,000 less for my current car when new.
Small point regarding the comment @ the 5:20 mark about being able to spec 4WD on any trim except the Elevation. The Elevation is available in 4WD, but it's the only trim that's available in 2WD.
worst thing is the stupid pricing... its absurd.

@MY LIFE IS LEGENDARY the current Tacoma didn't do anything better than the previous generation of colorado and canyon. Yes, they need to upgrade a lot of its just fluff and they'll be even further behind. But sheeple will love it. Toyota is banking that they'll settle for less, again.
Down the road I could definitely see multiple power train options
The gloss black plastic int is hard to keep clean and scratches super easy.
First off, I really love the truck. The off road capability is superb. The bad is cosmetic. I don't like the white in the interior. I don't like the price either. They're pretty proud of it. Still, it's a great package.
I love the Canyons, I just can't get over the ugly white and tacky red accents on the AT4X. Reminds me of something id see a VW or Honda boy do to the inside of their cars. I'd rather get the Colorado ZR2 for nearly 6-8k USD less if it was between that and the AT4X. However, if I was getting anything other than the top trim, I'd get GMC Canyon.

Agreed. White leather is a bizarre choice. Imagine you're in charge of interior design and you have ALL the choices and you go " let's go white".
Evidently there is no one on here that was in the military or works on a military installation and had/has to deal with the requirement to dim your lights when entering the base. Having to access your headlights options through the touch screen every time is ridiculous. That being said I still think it is a good looking truck.

I don’t like that front push bar, it hides the GMC emblem and that good looking front end!
That's easy they could have picked a better transmission instead of the horrible 8 speed transmission. They could have added the diesel as an option made the back seat. Bigger have all there canyons? What's 11 inch in the center in front of the Steering wheel. and multiproagate?
does any trucks, compact, mid, or full size, come with memory seats? My wife is way shorter & so annoying w/out this feature.
Very well organized presentation and great copy - you hit the important parts that differentiate the 4 trims nicely. Let's face it, the perfect midsize truck doesn't exist. For me it would look like the GMC Canyon AT4X - have the Ford Raptors 3.0 direct and port fuel injected engine, 10 speed transmission and Fox suspension, but would have Toyota's resale value and 'predicted' better reliability, lower ownership costs ............ right ?

The lights aren’t one click, it takes three. Absolutely stupid. I bet the switch is back in ‘24 or ‘25. I was seriously considering a Canyon before I saw this engineering fail. I will just wait for the new Tacoma. All the fan boys can make all the excuses they want. Good for them. In reality certain controls need physical “no look” switches. By the way, the boys at TFL had their infotainment screen fail. There goes the light control. 😡

I downgraded from a 2020 Canyon to a 2023 Canyon elevation. These trucks are fleet trucks used for service work with a cap on the bed. Here are what they took out / downgraded: 4-Low Dampened tail gate, new tail gate drops hard and the door handle pops out 5ft bed, nearly useless for work No more sliding sun visor, no lights in visor Power driver seat gone Voice control without a subscription No towing capability (no hitch from factory) Center console smaller No overhead sunglasses compartment No driver/passenger dedicated dome light As mentioned before, the 5tf bed introduced all kinds of problems. I can't fit a 6ft ladder in the bed, therfore I now have a ladder rack over the cap. The 4 banger is extremely sensitive to aerodynamic loads, as a result I'm getting significantly worse fuel economy. The 23 is also plagued with the new technology woes. Constant anti collision false alerts, annoying stop/start and the absolute abomination of a user interface where most useful buttons now are. Speaking of which, the backlight doesn't dim so at night there's this massive rectangle of light in your peripheral vision. I have to throw something over the screen at night to properly see the road. Also, the headlights are aimed too high from the factory and people will always be flashing their high beams at you. It's extremely frustrating. If I could chose my truck, I would ditch this Canyon and go back to my 2020
Great looking. But almost as much as a full size truck. Yikes

@@dwnshft I had a 2018 Colorado and GM had to buy it back due to drivetrain issues.
Pickups need to start coming out as EVS. Letting the battery stick out about 5-6 inches into the truck bed is NOT an issue for some people like me. That way we can get some decent range instead of trying to squeeze the tiniest possible one into the back seat. I would buy an EV Canyon if the battery was that large. One thing that makes no sense, Ford won't use the engine bay to hold the battery and it can hold a TON of stuff in there. I don't want to spend all night charging my truck when the range isn't even 50 miles... EV technology so far, has not impressed me and it will always cost a fortune. To the drunk EV fans who say "Naaaaah!" If there is NO competition, there is no reason to drop prices. In fact, despite what Tesla fanboys claim, the brand HIKED its prices thousands of dollars on all models. I am not spending more than I have to if in a few years, they suddenly drop them $3-4,000. But I get the feeling they won't. There's no alternative so they won't make them more affordable.
This should be compared to the 24’ Tacoma …..326hp plus Toyota reliability 🤔
