Another tip for more advanced users: If your computer is getting old (5-6 years or more), you might want to think about replacing thermal paste. Even if your system isn't not overheating, thermal paste degrades over time, and I believe most thermal paste lose their efficiency after this time (y'all can correct me on this). This also applies to graphics cards.

I've seen the opposite when it comes to windows high performance plan vs balanced with ryzen. Something about the way core performance boost works, high performance doesn't allow the cores to down clock which means single cores won't boost as high. Alot of games rely heavily on single core performance so you'd be better off keeping the windows balanced plan on if you have Ryzen

I recently built a PC and after having done all of your suggestions here, I found that locking all of my CPU cores at one speed gave me a more steady gaming experience. Instead of letting the OS, motherboard or background software raise and lower the clocks as demand changes, I told the CPU how fast to go and it stays there. The result is better response times and frame rates when conditions change in game. The maximum boost clock (dammit Jay now you have me doing it), turbo clock on my CPU is 4.7Ghz. I locked it at 4.4 for all cores. There was no messing with voltages or anything complicated. I simply went into my BOIS and set the CPU Core Multiplier to 44. The experience is smooth and reliable. Sometimes speed is not what you need, simply smoothing the frame rate can make a huge difference.

If it's possible to do this all-core OC through Inte/AMD tools for a profile only when you run games/processor intensive applications, it might save on electricity and longevity while you're just on youtube most of the day. It still retains the stable 1% lows while game is running (or alt-tab minimized) so hopefully still nearly as smooth as a BIOS provided OC.

On Ryzen the big thing I did other than update BIOS and tune the memory is actually to undervolt the CPU using a voltage offset - my 3800X was hitting 85C on a 120mm AiO and simply applying a -0.075V negative offset to CPU voltage dropped max temps to 65C with zero hit to performance. Single core boost clocks seemed to actually improve slightly for some reason too.

It's the first build I've done since everything was still IDE. Had to share the fact that I'm using an Antec case I had laying around...found a couple of QA date stamps from 2003! I'm modding the case a bit and will probably get a new case eventually, but I'm doing this to see how cheaply I could build a decent machine.

I boot from a nvme but have an ssd for my program files and swap file. You might think this slows things down but consider that without using another drive the os is using its own files, loading a program and filling the virtual memory. Give it a go n let me know.... ;)

Anyone still running their OS on an HDD needs to go to services.msc and disable sysmain service. While this doesn't matter on SSDs much, this always runs in the background, tracking every click, app, program, and function you perform, and usually uses between 2-8% of your DISK utilization all the time. Stop this service and turn it off. HDD's don't need this running.
