Stress essentially kicks on the fight or flight response. This response is meant to be a short-term reaction to help you fight off an attacker or run away from danger. The fight or flight response speeds up your heart and lungs, pumps out adrenaline and cortisol, and puts a halt on trauma in the nervous system. Stress response your hypothalamus tells your nervous system to return to calm. But when stress becomes chronic, it can lead to chronic illness and contribute to irritability, anxiety, and depression. So let’s talk about five ways stress hurts your body and what to do about it.

Lately stress has been giving me lots of nausea and upset stomach symptoms. Last year it was heart palpatations. Just knowing whats going on in my body and learning new ways to cope(healthy eating, exercising, talking etc) has been a big help. Holiday's have been hard since I lost my Dad back in December of 2014. Always notice an uptick in physical responses around this time of year. Thank you for all that you do, really needed this video!

Same exact thing with me Andy - expect this year for me it's not stomach and nausea, but more on the heart palpitation side - initially scared me at first but educating myself and watching videos like this really help - I've gone through some pretty heavy things the last few years: like you, losing my father, going through a divorce shortly after and then losing my job. Three massive stress bombs that really impacted me mentally and now physically as well.

For a better life sit on a chair, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations. As a person with high neuroticism, low self-esteem and behind in life, my stress gets very high quite easily, especially on those depressive periods when I feel that there is nothing I can do to change my situation or to get out of my rut. Some months ago, I had a crisis of hypochondria, due to LPR (laryngopharyngeal reflux); this incurable condition was definitely the result of chronic stress over the years. This health anxiety led to my first ever anxiety attack. The next weeks my body was constantly on fight-flight-freeze response; I also started to be afraid of having an anxiety disorder; not to mention the existential crisis (death anxiety and depersonalization) and the intrusive thoughts. Then anxiety became sub-clinical again. But I feel that I'm more sensitive to stress now than I was before. LPR is intermittent, but it really flares up with stress. If my mood is especially volatile and irritable for a while, due to some neuroticism crisis, I know that, in the next few days, even if I'm psychologically well again, I will feel anxiety in my body, and my LPR will flare up, along with upper back pain, abdominal discomfort and rashes in my face and chest. Of course, sometimes some of these physical symptoms arise without any particular stressor or previous depressive slump. For instance, at least 3 times a month I get those rashes on my face. Exercise, meditation, journaling and breathing exercises (I recently discovered one very quick and effective, called the "physiological sigh"), have been helping me a lot though.

I'm in the similar place, my friend. Spent the whole of this year investigating a GI issue possibly IBD. I still awaiting a diagnosis. Health anxiety has really ruined me. I've literally been on panic mode for the whole of this year stressing about cancer and everything under the sun. I like yourself also suffer LPR and Gerd and lately I've convinced myself that I have esophageal cancer and I'm going to die. I'm still waiting for an endoscopy. Anxiety is essentially trying to predict the virtue and trying to control things which are beyond our control. I pray and hope for the best. God bless and I wish you well.

I've used it for 90 days consecutively now for 5 hours minimum a day and it has been really helpful. Feels really soothing because my nerves are so shot from my chronic health issues.. I'm also struggling with some of the same things you mention, and yin brings my stress / anxiety / fear levels from 90 to a 0-10 in roughly 30 minutes! My perfectly healthy husband of 20 years died suddenly in front of me a few months ago due to cardiac arrest. I had to perform CPR on him. They don’t know why his heart conked out so they are now testing my kids to make sure they are ok. Now I am suddenly a solo parent to two young kids and am worried about their health. I am also in the middle of settling his estate with lawyers, accountants etc. Also trying to maintain a home with all of the bills minus one full large income. I can only afford bills and groceries. Now it’s Christmas 👎🏻 That’s REAL stress. Getting stuck in traffic is not real stress. My blood pressure went up and if it were not for my impeccable healthy diet I’d likely be dead. It’s the only thing keeping me alive.

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my husband of 19 1/2 years suddenly. No previous issues. They ? if a vessel on the back of the heart became blocked....they call it the widow maker as there typically are no symptoms until the person has a heart attack and dies. I shared your concerns. Be sure to take care of yourself and children by eating well, taking a walk, talking together and getting enough rest. What really helped our family, was taking time to read the Bible together, and asking God to help us get through each day. Hugs.

Yes amazing thanks it’s so clear to the point .. what I noticed is a issue is when ppl don’t wanna solve the issues behind the stress and don’t realize that they need to make life changes .. if it’s changing jobs or schools for a child because of how we were trained by society what’s good and what’s not. For me it took long time to realize my job is bad for me because I had a great boss and got paid nicely so what can be wrong? And when I did mediation I ignored those thoights and didn’t know how to let it come up and deal with it.

Boy don't I know this!! One thing I'd like to point out is that when you're under stress, at least for me, old injuries will become issues. For me, it's my left shoulder that was injured due to repetitive stress. I was under a great deal of stress mid 2020 and the pain returned to my shoulder. While it is so much better (after cortisone shots and PT), it continues to be an issue whenever I am stressed. I do a lot of deep breathing to relieve it. One thing I am not so good at is taking breaks during my work day. It's usually after I'm done working that I focus on my breathing and it's amazing how much that helps!

Meditation and meditative music can be incredibly effective tools for managing stress. By focusing on the present moment and letting go of distracting thoughts, meditation can help calm the mind and promote a sense of inner peace and relaxation. Meditative music can enhance this process by providing a soothing and calming backdrop that can help us get into a more relaxed state. Regular meditation practice can also help rewire the brain to be less reactive to stress and more resilient in the face of challenges. Overall, incorporating meditation and meditative music into our daily routine can be a powerful way to manage stress and promote overall well-being

Hey Emma, Could you talk about the fight, flight, freeze response in some people (HSP) ? Too much stimuli and loud noises also triggers all that symptoms in a High Sensitive people, like me. What can we do about it? There's some differences between these two kind of people? Can you please shed some light on this (HSP) ? Thank you 💜

Hello there, Thank you so much for the valuable content you post here. You have helped me so much through my anxiety so many times. I do have one question though. When I am anxious or I have a panic attack, my focus goes on my heart rate/pulse and as i see it grow, i get scared and it grows even more, sometimes it goes to 140/160 in rare cases when I am really scared. I have tried compassion meditation, accepting, and listening to what i need, or what actions i have to take to stop the fear...but because of this I am afraid to exercise. I go for walks or do bike 15 min/day but i don't let my pulse go over 125. My question is, how can I exercise without being worried about my pulse? Thank you so so much!

Stop measuring it. Your heart rate and BP will increase during exercise and during panic attacks, you can't do anything to stop that, measuring it is only adding your anxiety and panic. Try to not measure it, trust that your body is doing what it needs to be doing during exercise. If you find it hard to stop measuring it, instead start by trying to delay, so if you get the urge to measure, make yourself wait a few minutes, then 5 mins, then 10 etc and use grounding techniques in the meantime to try and help you stay calm

Hi I would like to let you know from my experience with anxiety and heart rate,I have been experiencing anxiety for the past 7 months am 41 years old,I was so sick couldn't eat ,walk talk ,sleep or di anything was totally a goner mentally and physically, but one day I decided to get up and do some walking with very low energy I started out about 3 months now walking for like 15 minutes outdoor ,now I do 30mins outdoor just walking and try putting on some music on your phone while you walk I was scared at first cause of the heart issue but got fed up eventually,so I say if this have to kill me so be it ,I can't continue to live like this,so here I am still alive had high blood pressure was on meds when started exercising now my BP is normal I don't take meds anymore and for as the pulse concern don't be afraid my use to be high it will go back to normal once your body gets accustomed to the change of exercise and you will feel better to,just do it,it is what it is,don't be scared am scared sometimes for no reason because of my anxiety but I just say to myself it will pass soon ,keep telling your self that and take back your life, and connect with God

@@petra17p23 A reminder, To feel better reduce negative thoughts. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations. When taking a walk, at office, in college, when reading, before sleep etc observe your breath sensations. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Counsellor.

Quick Question: I've noticed through several changes I've made in my life that my stress has lessened and of course that's great! However, I've also noticed that I care less about my life in general. I don't enjoy the same things I used to. I don't have any real goals or motivation to achieve things, and I don't really care about people in my life save my children. I'm not trying to make friends, get out of my comfort zone, connect with others I've met recently and build on those relationships. An when I do achieve something that at one point was important to me..it's actually feels like such a let down. Overall, I just feel... Blah or Meh. What could that possibly mean? I understand you don't know me personally so you can't diagnose me. I'm just looking for some.. any information you can share that would lead me in the direction of a better understanding as to what's happening to me. Thank you.

Hello Therapy in a Nutshell! Your courses sound wonderful, however my main interest is how to escape the freeze response. Some context: aside from the freeze response I also have a problem with dopamine due to behavioral patterns (such as a phone addiction and others), so I know that problem also adds onto me not being able to do things. However, I do think I ALSO am in a freeze response, quite often, perhaps a chronic one, and really want to learn more about it. Is there something special you offer on that? Or could you tip me off on what video titles to search up? Thank you very much! (Btw, have you revealed your name on your channel?)
