5 Ways My Art Went From BAD To GOOD

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Well I'm not proud of this, but I've dug through my old art and pulled out the first thing I drew with artist grade pencils. It's definitely not my best work, but I thought it would be cool to compare it to my most recent drawing of the same subject!

As a complete art noob, I am mesmerised by your work. Let’s be real, the old lion was still really good, but that new one! Holy smokes. Loving your videos, please keep them coming :)

Also, I like that you use your cheerful face in the videos, not always just hands dancing around.

Thank you for your compare and contrast discussion (video) and your tips are "spot on"! Layering is so important that it cannot be emphasized enough to create that realism. I do appreciate, enjoy and learn from each of your tutorials. I am sure you are told often, but I shall say it again, you are a wonderful talent and thank you for sharing your experience with us all.

I don’t draw; I just color. But I find your videos so helpful. I really appreciate your style. Always to the point, paced well for even a beginner and doesn’t drag on and on. I want to get to the coloring, not watch tutorials all day long! I’m sure your a star in the drawing community but I wish you had some videos just for colorists. Also, because I’m learning to put colors together, I wish you’d include written tags of the colors you are using each step of the way, or a list in order of using them in the description. That would be really helpful. Thank you for the skill, talent, and creativity of your videos.

I think paper definitely makes a huge difference, I personally like hot pressed watercolor paper for my colored papers because I can get so many layers, but if I'm blending out with OMS hot pressed watercolor paper takes it so well. Thanks for the great tips!

I love this self criticism video. I have a major problem that creates a mental block for me when I am not happy with what is going on with my drawing - it is much appreciated.

Hi Gemma, thank you for sharing your great videos on layering with pencils. Would you please tell me which paper you prefer for detailed drawings? ,and do you do your contour drawings with graphite or a light coloured pencil.? Kind regards Cryselda Venter South 🇿🇦

Really helpful. Thanks. Gemma, Is it ok to mix pencil brands, say polychromos and prismacolor. Could you say a bit about that. Thanks again.

You certainly can, but you never know what result you're going to get as the combinations can become infinite. With things like that it's worth swatching on a scrap piece to see how they work together. I generally stick to one brand per drawing for simplicity though - I often use a black Polychromos to bring out the darkest values in graphite work but nothing more adventurous than that :)
