This is a theory, but it does seem that the more masculine the person the more feminine they prefer their partner. The closer to the middle the person is the more variable their preferences This is especially the case with men

it's not really a theory; that's been observed for centuries at least. It's pretty obvious - the most powerful way to think of attraction is that we're attracted to people who outwardly display traits that in ourselves are repressed

This is an interesting topic . I've said for a while that men and women view attractiveness differently, this theory stemmed from my high school experience. There was always a girl that all the guys fancied, but the girls (me included) saw nothing special about. It had nothing to do with jealousy, but a genuine and confusing observation. A girl that 'other' girls deemed attracted was never seen as that attractive by the guys. I've always been confused about my perceived attractiveness as I feel I have a gender balanced 'positive' feedback. However, I think my face leans towards men finding it more attractive than women do.

An aspect that probably influences these types of studies is that the test subjects for psychology research often are psychology students. Which means that the studied group has gone through a pre-selection: participants tend to be in their 20's, are more towards the intelligent end of IQ spectrum & come usually from middle-class or higher socio-economic background. I also wonder about the cultural differences - would a research done in Thailand or Sudan yield the same results as the same research done in th USA? For an average video-wiever it is almost impossible to make an assesment about how well the study was done or how comprehensive it's scope was. Many of the psychology results haven't been able to be replicated - or the results are much murkier than the cut-clean interpretation given to the public. Psychology is a really complicated field of study!

Cool story: when I started to get into K-pop and k-dramas, I was like "oh, I like this ugly one" from the members of a group, or drama cast. And then I found out that this person is actually in charge of visuals of the group. So of course I liked him. Everyone likes him. Although logically my brain was used to see men with different facial features as attractive, it still worked objectively. Emotionally I chose that person, who was considered attractive by a lot of other people.

The more poor the country is the more masculine men are seen as attractive and feminine women seen as attractive. Everyone like tall and in shape men, and big boobs, but the more rich the country is - the more are people ready to settle for less. Masculinity and femininity are ques for health and non hungry non disease ridden childhood. In developed nations those ques are less relevant. Plus women feel safer so they dont feel the need to find a mate that can protect them physically.

Yeah i'm from a developing nation and here, beauty is much more rigorous for women. Men on the other hand need to have high paying jobs. It is due to the culture, women stay at home, men work. But as our economy is growing i'm seeing things equalling out. Arranged marriages are going down and there is emphasis on beauty for men too (in urban areas).

I don't think you've heard that dating do not works for attractive people by being only attractive, it's said in this video, self esteem is also an factor that is needed to be taken into account if you belitte yourself then you will get the effect called "Self fullfilling phropercy" that works on almost every aspect of your life if you let it. If you will tell yourself that you will never achive anything in life guess what happens the self fullfilling phropercy effect will start to take over your life.

Hi Qoves Studio, would you consider doing a video on what is more powerful when it comes to attraction "nature vs. nurture" or what is scientifically beautiful vs. what pop culture considers beautiful? In many of your videos, you've stated that things like jawline and symmetry are more important than things like having blue eyes or white skin. However, I am American and, here it seems like most women in their 20s and 30s would chase after an Andrew Garfield and, ignore a Sendhil Ramamurthy even though Sendhil is clearly scientifically closer to fitting the definition of beauty. After years of witnessing so many examples of this I can't help but, to think that what society (and media: movies, television, magazines) deems as beautiful is more influential than what we evolved to think is beautiful. Your thoughts?

You have to look at what they represent too; especially when it comes to celebrities. Not just what they look like. Since they are celebrities, there is already a high chance they look much better than the average guy, so it matters less because they are both hot. What kind of role does each man generally play when he acts? How are they in interviews? For example Andrew has been a judge on Drag Race, so maybe this is attractive to a lot of women because it means he is "open minded" and maybe cares a lot about different social justice subjects that are important to women. And also: is one of them a more well known celebrity? I think that will play a big part, even if you show pictures of them when asking these women.

I noticed that on Tinder, I liked certain men, then a couple weeks later, I'd look at those matches and wonder what the heck I was thinking. Then after a couple more weeks I'd find them attractive again! Same with my current boyfriend. He is effeminate and sometimes he seems WAY too girly for me, while other times he seems manly. I came up with the theory that it depends on where I'm at in my cycle. It's so cool to hear that this is actually a thing. I love science. Oh, and my cycle also dictates what type of music I prefer. And what movies I want to watch. Amazing.

What are other examples of what are "pretty" males? I'm just not sure how to take the compliment honestly as usually if a woman wanted to compliment my looks it was "good looking", "cute" or "attractive" or "handsome" and the usual ones. Why in the Hell would a woman opt for the word "pretty"?

At 6:26 or so, the point is made that men prefer more feminized faces for SR sexual flings and a more masculinized face for LR marriage. For women, they prefer the more masculinized face for SR flings and a more feminized face for LR marriage. The speculation is presented that the man or the woman prefers the less attractive, lower value person for LR marriage since these less desirable folks are less able to desert them because they cannot find another mate as easily. I would say it quite the opposite. The masculinized woman can be very attractive such as Lauren Bacall and she shows more emotional stability and intelligence, which make her a better wife and mother and also makes her less emotionally changeable and therefore more likely to be faithful to the man and the family. More feminized women are less dependable and less able to manage a household and less devoted as a mother even if they are judged to be more stimulating in bed. For women, hyper-masculinized men might be judged to be better in bed for a fling (from my own questioning of women who have had such affairs, this assumption is questionable since many men like this are done within seconds as they just go for the sexual climax), but are judged to be less able in a modern developed economy that thrives on intelligence and foresight, which the "hunk" lacks. The heavier a person's features, the more likely they are to have a smaller brain, and brain size and intelligence are positively related. The man with a greater balance of features including some feminized features would be more attractive since they have the ambition to advance but they also have the caring attitude necessary to be a loving and devoted husband and father. A man with very masculinized features might not be as willing to sacrifice for the family and share the resources that he has earned, if he has the self-discipline and intellectual ability to even gain more resources in an advanced economy where self-control pays off in the LR.

This is for when people start talking about social constructs. Everything social is a product of biological manifestations of evolution. No one is really enforcing ideas of masculinity or feminity, it's just the natural response to evident sexual differences.

No, the idea of masculine and feminine (behaviour) has its roots in biology and evolution, but is influenced to a large extent by culture, education, and the environment. As an example, I am West African and in my country we have a great variety of tribes, the women of the Manjago tripe (my tripe) are much more aggressive in their behavior (masculine behavior) but the men like it, for them it is not masculine but rather womanly, shy women are not considered attractive and childlike, as shyness is mostly associated with young children. Well, in one of our neighboring tribes, the women are quite shy and submissive (feminine behavior), and in this tribe, it is a desirable behavior for a woman, loud and aggressive women are seen as masculine and manly. And those are just two tribes in just one country, you can see those differences around the world. Feminine and masculine are not universal across the world, but I do believe there are some deep rooted evolutionary differences in the behavior of men and women, but where you grow up has way more impact on you. When it comes to physical dimorphism, Asian males are considered feminine here in my country because of their soft physical structure and faces. Physical dimorphism has surely an universal denominator, but again, culture, environment, and education play an even bigger role. Humans throughout history have found the most peculiar things attractive just because it was trendy at their time, far from what biology would suggest as being attractive.
