5 Ways loosen engine oil filter

5 Ways loosen engine oil filter
FILTERS, there are of many sizes and colors...
All have one thing in common, all are difficult to loosen
For that reason I propose...
Five ways to loosen the filters
Sometimes you can loosen by hand
Caution! the filters can be very hot
1st method - Extraction tape (the most common)
2nd method - Extractor type octopus (the most effective)
3nd method - chain Extractor
4nd method - pipe wrench , Stillson wrench or Stillsons
5th method - Make a hole to the filter and leverage with a large screwdriver
Make the hole in the back, so as not to damage the thread
Use this method as a last resort, may cause some undesirable break

    Old school mechanic here, thats a few options there, but in reality, those oil filter are in some hard to areas in getting a those tools you displayed in there. Overall just don't be cheap and buy proper tools like oil filter wrenches to get the job done, it's fast and easy, and you won't damage your knuckles.

    I've never owned an effective oil filter wrench. They either slip (don't grab tightly enough) or require more clearance/space than is available. I've learned over the years to just not over-tighten them in the first place. Then you can remove it by hand pretty easily. When installing, just spin until contact, then another 3/4 turn and you'll never need a wrench to remove it.

  • @jimsmith4005

    @jimsmith4005

    That's what the filter's installation instructions says.

  • @stevebrooks971
    @stevebrooks9712 жыл бұрын

    they are never hard to loosen if the installer installs it right. First, make sure you clean the flat surface well. Then, and this is a must, put oil on the new filter gasket before installation. And third, most importantly, never, never, never, never, never use a filter wrench to install an oil filter. It says hand tighten only on the filter. Wait till the gasket makes contact with surface, and only turn 3/4 turn with your hand. Yep, only hand tighten and you will never have any problems getting them off.

    I bought a set of oil filter sockets on eBay,quite cheap,a nod they fit over the end of the filter and allow you to use a ratchet to remove. They work very well and don't do any damage. I also have a pair of slip jaw pliers that have a 90 degree bend on the jaws. They fit into very tight areas and remove filters easily. Hammering through the filter should only be a very last option once all possible options have been exhausted!

    In my case I had none of these tools, other than a screw driver. But I didn't feel like getting showered In oil. Channel locks for the win. My dumb ass took my vehicle to Walmart to have the oil changed and holy shit did they over tightened everything. Never again. I ended up using channel locks on my filter due to where it's located I just fit them around the top of the filter and cranked on it till it came loose. I do enjoy this video. Because it helps explain what tools are out there, and how to use them to a degree. I understand this isn't under a car in tight conditions. But it gives you an idea of what tools could potentially help you in a scenario where someone else screwed you over.

    My filter was so stuck that i tried several methods, and here's what I eventually did: Drill a small hole in the lowest point to drain, and another hole in the tip of the filter to let the air in so it drains faster. Once it's drained enough, figure out the best angle to jam a screwdriver into it, and drill the entry hole (I did it roughly half way along the filter). Ram or hammer a thick screwdriver into it (right through if you can). Twist. The amount of effort is much less than you think it will be, once you've got the torque of the screwdriver acting on it. Messy but it worked. Happy twisting :]

    I tried on an ATV very little space to work. Drilled holes into the wrench and directly into the filter. Place some screws and NO slipping.!

    They sell universal ones that have 3 claw type grippers and you use a socket wrench. As you loosen it the claws grip the filter.. I paid lile $10 for it.. Basically looks lile the 2nd one.

    Ima try the last one I'm sure I'll have plenty of room to make enough force to put a long ass screwdriver in with a hammer

    You would be surprised how often I’ve had to do this on multiple vehicles and have made it work , usually doesn’t take as much force as he used in this video and you only need a screwdriver that is long enough to reach through both sides of the filter. Also using a weighted hammer helps . But yes it is still usually a hassle and you have to be extremely careful for what’s around the filter .

    Wrapping an old timing belt or v belt tight around the filter body and grip tight with a pair of mole grips or vice grips. This will remove filter without any damage. Thorough cleaning to improve friction always a good first step.

    You can also use the leather belt you use on your pants. The thing is that most of the methods used in the video will only work if you have plenty of space around the filter. Most of the newer cars hardly have any space around the filter. I always use my leather belt and it has never fail me.

    i.rodriguez only problem is my pants would fall down! I have invested in the special sockets that fit on the end of the filters, they fit great and can use existing ratchets on them.

    In the last resort, drilling a hole with a drill is a better option than hammering on oil filter which could damage the oil filter mounting or its threads.

    @@adamleddington368 Oil filter is normally removed when the engine is off. The swarf will settle down at the bottom of the filter which is finally thrown away. There is no way swarf gets dumped in the sump 😁😁

    Ajazz Maqbool plus it has anti drain back valve, the content inside the filter won’t come out.
