5 ways a Cricut can help a Sewist!

Ойын-сауық

Today it’s a bit of inspiration, if you didn’t think a Cricut could help you in the sewing room, maybe you should think again!
I love my Cricut maker, I use it to help me embellish and personalise my makes. I hope you find this video useful if you have been wondering how a Cricut can help you to sew. I am a fan, not an affiliate xx

Super vid. I’ve just got my maker machine and still getting used to everything but it’s fab, the rotary cutter is amazing! One of the main reasons I got it was to draw embroidery designs, can’t wait to do it! Do you use the disappearing ink pen to draw the design? Do you have the heat press for applying vinyl or do you use an iron? Xx

I used an ordinary Cricut pen but I do have an invisible pen, keep your eye on amazon- they periodically have great deals on stuff. I use an ordinary iron but I’m saving for an easy press 😊 I want to make a little bambi after seeing yours!

The scan and cut is fab too- and you can use it as a stand alone machine without the need for a computer. I also like the scan facility, cricut has snap mat but it’s not as good as the scan function on the brother. The Cricut has different tools like an embossing tip and perforation tool......they are both great machines. If you have the brother already and get on well with it I’d say stick with it 😜

It should have come with it- looks like a tiny circular blade with a cog on the top. The maker is supposed to come with it so go back to Cricut if you haven’t got one x

If your purchase was very recent, especially if it was the Maker 3, the company stopped including that blade with the machine.

i make doll clothes and i bought the cricut maker specifically for cutting out patterns. I am having a terrible time trying to convert my patterns so that i can use them in design space. The idea of drawing on the seam line is exactly what i need but i can't for the life of me find anywhere that explains how to actually do that. it's not as easy as i would have liked.

Are the patterns SVG’s? (That’s the type of file you need). Design space has a few dolls clothes patterns on there, there are lots of how to videos, I hope you find out how to fix your problem x

@@threadtherapy251 I traced over the patterns in illustrator and converted them to svg files. When I import them into design space the lines go all over the place. The only way I can create the seam lines is if I do a basic offset of the shape, which doesn’t always work. I need to be able to create hem lines and seam lines. I’ve looked at so many KZread videos and blogger tutorials and they all say it can be done, but no where explains how. Lines in illustrator don’t always work in design space.

Denise Humphrey has a video of using PDF and SVG files, including transfer into the markings. Those might help.

My major sewing project is face masks - I use a 3D box design, so the fabric cut is literally a rectangle. My issue is the maker limits you on the length of fabric. My thought was to fold the fabric, but I would need to instruct the machine not to cut the bottom line of the rectangle is this possible?

Have you got a long mat? You can buy very good generic mats- they don’t have to be cricut brand.

After about a month, don't they charge for the software in the UK?

  • @threadtherapy251

    @threadtherapy251

No, you can sign up for the Cricut subscription that gives you extra content for £6 a month ish (which I do- it’s worth it for me) but you don’t have to. There’s tons of free content online, lots that you can download for nothing including fonts/images etc. If you choose not to subscribe you can still use the machine to its full potential x

That's great, but here in NZ I've heard of very disgruntled purchaser who claim the machine can't work as the software part is discontinued unless they pay for it. I will have to check for myself. It sounds great fun. Thanks for your reply.

Susan Roome maybe they have an old machine that takes cartridges? I think they are phasing them out. You do need access to the internet to use the Cricut. A laptop, desktop, iPad, phone. The design space is free, subscription is just for extra projects and content x
