The most important tool is not a bonus tool.... it's where it all starts with: patience! (and in my case reading glasses!!!!!)

You are right Gerrit, funny you are talking about glasses. I just went to get my eyes checked because I thought I was starting to struggle ( getting older) . Turns out I will need to add lights in my shop because my eyesight is still the same... maybe it’s all in my head... that could be.. with age ..

Thanks for the video! I’m a self taught amateur luthier and always looking to learn. I primarily built cigar box ukuleles with premade build components. I’m interested in restoring vintage ukuleles and ones folks have just given up on...lol. Now to hop on Amazon and grab myself a pull saw and some spool clamps!

Nice work, like your work and your building style.i am a luthier myself and believe you gave some valuable advice, especially the bonus tool" being patient".Probably the hardest thing for most beginners to learn.i really like the stew mac fret saw.i own the same saw and highly recommend it. Beside your top 5 I believe it would also be extremely helpful to have some good chisels and some files .I really love iwasaki files for neck shaping.also I find scrapers invaluable. Also I would recommend a precision straight edge. Just a few things I consider essential. Obviously there are many other highly helpful tools and what is truly essential can vary from one person to another. Anyway keep up the good work.

Thanks for your input Greg, you are right many tools could be on this list and will vary from one builder to another. Will definitely have a closer look at the iwasaki files. I never tried them ... happy building!

Very interesting video Tomy. I had no idea a specific fret saw was even e thing. I hope to try my hand at my own guitfiddle sometime soon, so this will be helpful.

Thanks Chuck. You would have probably noticed as soon as the first few frets would have fallen back out that something was off ;) glad this is helpful and thanks for watching..

It doesn't have to be purpose built, it just needs to leave the right kerf for the frets. I tried all the saws in my shop, and settled on a small crown gent's saw that was "just right" (IE, I cut a slot in a scrap piece of wood, then measured it with a feeler gauge to see how wide it was).

Very good Tomy, I think the bonus tool patients is the Most important thing.. I have been trying to build a tennon uke for six months now, I have had epic failures. But I research learn from my mistakes & keep moving forward. Thank you I have learned alot from you.

I started building a kit guitar and even though many of the tools needed I have around the house (some were my grandfather's), the one essential tool I didn't have was a small router or router base for my Dremel tool. I don't know how you could cut a uniform channel for binding and purfling without a small router and router fence.

Hand tool people would use a Gramil to scribe and cut wood fibres and then use other sharp tools to expose the channel. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mGxmk7WaddCedZc.html
