5 Tips to SURVIVING on the Back of a Tandem Bicycle
The first 1,000 people to use this link will get a 1 month free trial of Skillshare: skl.sh/edpratt07211
The front rider of a tandem is called the ‘pilot’, while the rider on the back is the ‘stoker’. Being a stoker is easy. You don’t need to worry about controlling the bike, braking, or changing gears. All you have to do is pedal and enjoy the view. But is it true?

An old tandem expression: Where ever your relationship is going, a tandem will take you there faster. After my girlfriend and I had been dating for a month and I thought the relationship had potential, I rented a tandem and we did a 28 mile ride to find out. That was over three years ago and the relationship continues to get better. We own a tandem now. Her seat post is a Kinekt. Stoker comfort is very important. About two miles into the first ride with it, I'm calling bumps and I hear back "I don't care!" Success! I still call any bump I can see which I think will be significant. The most important word for a captain/pilot to know and use: "Sorry!"
@aisholaaisaeva

haha that sounds like she passed the test very well and I absolutely agree with your last words about captain haha!

It's a long-held tandeming adage that a tandem will either cement your relationship for eternity, or destroy it in a month. I am happy to report that we graduated from our 20-year-old Dawes Double Edge tandem (bought new and then converted for pure road use) to a Greenspeed GTT recumbent tandem trike. That was a few tears ago... I think this one is the last one we will buy, good for the rest of our lives.
Thanks Aishola for this wonderful video. 👏👏 The few times i've ridden a tandem i've always been a Pilot and most of the tips apply to either people on the bike.

I am overwhelmed with pleasure watching these videos. My wife and I have been riding tandem for 30 years now. As we always say keep riding tandem, you will always be together. My wife says I am the captain and she is the radio. It's true lots of things can be worked out in tandem. But it does give me pain to see all that weight on a bike!!! Oh dear....you guys are so strong.

Ahh this is so nice to read Jonathan, and I love her saying ‘captain’ and the ‘radio’ haha, I relate to it so much haha. I bubble a lot! Oh yeah, we have lots of stuff. You start questioning yourself if it was worth taking extra clothes once you are pushing the bike up the nasty hills! But at the moment, we are ok with everything we carry :)

Lovely video! This is some really good advice (especially about the snacks!) I mostly pilot at the moment but I am also a stoker. The only thing I would add is that a stoker can use the pilot's pockets if they wear a jersey with rear pockets. Leaving your used hanky in there is not popular though.

I agree with your words, good communication is the key. I try to always inform Ed if I need to adjust myself on the seat or to get the stuff from the bags, so that he doesn't get confused why tandem is being so wobbly. Ed is also always informs about the upcoming bumps or when he's changing gears.

My brother and I spent several summers riding a tandem together. I was in my early 20's and he was still at school. This was in the late 70's with tandems that I wis I had kept. The way we coped with being with each other so closely for long periods of time was an agreement that we would take it in turns - one day it was all his fault and the next mine. It put the whole experience into perspective. Stories about things going wrong and fixing them is for another day.....

Next time, do this in FL during winter or spring when it’s cool. Florida is the flattest state in the US and has hundreds of miles of bike trails and paths that follow along the freeways. Unfortunately biking in most cities is awful and unsafe, but if you plan a route well and stick to the bike paths you’ll have good pavement, smooth sailing and no hills!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from the look of it, the pilot and stoker's drive trains are directly linked on that bike, so both of you ought to be able to _feel_ the other one pedaling, right?
@blubaughmr
2 жыл бұрын
If you're in synch, it's so smooth you don't. What you notice is when you get out of synch, like captain/pilot sees a problem developing ahead and while focussed on it stops pedaling before telling stoker. The other thing you notice is "Why are we going so slow?" Because one of you has bonked. Still smooth, but not as much power.

Yes, you are right, we can kinda of feel it, but sometimes it’s harder, especially when we are going uphills, then it feels like one of isn’t really pedalling enough haha 😁
My grandson is autistic and doesn't notice automobiles so he can't be trusted to ride a single bike. I bought an old tandem and fixed it up. I've been riding it by myself . I just don't want to have any mechanical problems it's a single speed bike. I don't think I've stood up on the pedals going up hill for about 50 years so I've been practicing that. But I think I'll stick to fairly level ground with my grandson. The bike is still in the maintenance shop at the factory where I work. Next weekend I intend to take it to both my son's and daughter's houses. I believe someone will have to ride beside it until Aiden learns what he is supposed to do. Please wish us both luck.

Yeah, we actually met a couple who had brakes on stoker’s handlebar. I personally thought its not a great idea. What your thoughts on it?
@markw4494
2 жыл бұрын
We have another rear wheel for our tandem with a drum brake on the hub that was controlled by the stoker. It was used to bleed off speed on descents without heating up the rim. We got it after the rim overheated on a descent in Switzerland and blew off the tire; fortunately we were not hurt in the crash since we were at a low speed. Most tandems use disk brakes now that don’t heat the rim. We have disk brakes on our current tandem.
@clemensmuller2543
2 жыл бұрын
@@aisholaaisaeva I think there are 2 points: 1) A tandem with pilot and stoker has almost twice the weight of a normal bicycle - but just slightly more air resistance. In order to maintain the same speed downhill, a tandem needs nearly twice the braking power (physics) of a normal bicycle. So 3 brakes instead of 2 are still not enough. ;) Of course you can use bigger discs. Or you drive slower* (lower speed means less vertically speed means less braking power necessary). Or you drive so fast that there is a balance between air resistance and downhill force. But a third brake is more comfortable: The pilot can choose a wider range of velocities without overheating the brakes. 2) A third brake gives to the stoker a bit of direct control over the speed. No communication needed. Of course you shouldn't pull this brake while changing lanes or while merging into traffic. But on longer descents - when the tandem gets faster and faster - it's nice that the stoker is able to gently decelerate. Btw.: Thank you both for your great videos! Greetings from Darmstadt! * Compare 1:44 It's a nice argument, pilots mention to drive faster than the stoker is comfortable with. But it's wrong. You never need to go fast downhill to pretend your brakes from overheating. You just need to drive slow enough so that the rate of dropping potential energy is lower than the maximum braking power that doesn't overheat the brakes.

For loaded tandems, if if doesn't have a "drag brake" (most tandems don't), it is true. The teams that have brake overheating problems are the ones that try to take a heavy tandem down steep hills slowly. Lots of discussion of the topic at Bike Forums/Tandem Cycling among experienced touring cyclists.
