    I have just started macro photography, especially insets. I totally agreed with all your tips, they are very practical. I found most of the macro photography tubes don't mention too much on the diffusers, but you have covered it well.

    I have my Flash in manual as well. Use a light meter to adjust flash to my aperture and my shutter speed to adjust how much ambient light to get in the photo. Great video 😀

    I bought the AK diffuser for my Nikon and 105mm macro. It works great. But imagine my surprise when I discovered that it also fits my OM1 with the FL36 and 60mm macro. You do need to extend the lens hood on the 60mm to support the diffuser, but it works fine.

    Great video Emilie. I just bought the 60mm Macro and tried it out a couple of days ago on a colourful caterpillar, but I realised from this video that I completely forgot the 1:1 control on the lens barrel. Aaaargh! I was all caught up in the excitement of this caterpillar that I had never seen before and logic went straight out the window. Oh well, I still got some nice shots but I’m glad of the reminder for next time. Thanks again and have a great week Emilie. 😀

    Hi Stephen. I think for caterpillar you might need to get out of true macro mode if you want the whole caterpillar so it is totally fine. I like to take shot at 1:1 ratio but also I use the 60mm macro to its full capacity and I do get out of the 1:1 ratio for some of my subjects.

    Very nice photos. That diffuser looks nice, wonder if they make a smaller one? I take all my macro bug photos at night and use a monopod for support. I need to upgrade my diffuser but I shoot in dense folage so I need something smaller and it cant stick out much further than the lens. So far I have not found that nice white diffuser plastic they use, as I think for my use I will have to make my own. Tried the Pope Shield that worked well but sits forward too much for use in a thick garden or field. Only good for open areas where you have plenty of room.

    I know what you mean. You could check with the person who does the AK diffuser. he is really responsive and ready to help and might have a solution for you. Otherwise, as you said making your own is the best solution and it is also a fun project :)

    I enjoyed the video, I customised my button adjacent to the lens barrel for magnify, I already had the other for focus peaking - makes life easier. I must admit at the moment I am struggling with macro - there are so few insects about in my part of the world. I have been taking macro for about 40 years and there have never been so few. What has happened to this planet? As a consequence I have never seen so few birds either. Regards macro diffuser .....I use the ST-8 twin flash, it's a little piece of magic!. For close up as oppose to true macro I use the 40-150 and MC20 - very flexible combination and the results are surprisingly sharp. here I use a Godox V860 II flash with a simple diffuser that was free of charge with the flash gun. I also use MC14 but the MC 20 gives that little extra working distance.

    Hi Jonathan. You are so right about less bugs and birds, except for moths. We just had an infection of moth here in NH. It is out of this world. They ate an incredible amount of leaves here: www.wmur.com/article/spongy-moth-caterpillar-defoliate-new-hampshire/40486641

    Hi Emilie, thanks for the interesting info. Just out of interest where is the light switch and usb cable for on your diffuser?

  • @EmilieT

    @EmilieT

    There is an led light inside the diffuser and you can plug an external battery to it and switch it on and off. If you don't have light mode, you can use the led light to help you focus.

    Really helpful Emilie, thank you! I must make a determined effort to use my 60mm macro lens as I do enjoy insect and close up flower photography. Do you have recommendations for a good flash gun for the OM1? I never use flash or a diffuser so I have lots of learning to do! It’s good to see you practicing your photography in the field - thank you for responding to my request for this😊

    Hi John. Yes you need to use the 60mm macro. It is one of my favorite lens. I highly recommend the FL-700WR Flash for flash. That is the one that I use. Also for a diffuser, the AK diffuser is really amazing but on the pricy side.

It all works really well for hiking - thank you again for recommending this kit!

    Hi. Great video and good tips. I love my 60mm macro, but dont understand what you meen that you cannot use auto focus in 1:1 mode? I always use auto focus for bugs 🤷

  • @EmilieT

    @EmilieT

    2 жыл бұрын

    Using auto focus will get you out of 1:1. That is why if you want 1:1 you need to use manual focus. But you don’t always need to be in 1:1 for insect. Some of my bee photos are not 1:1

  • @skaterJelly

    @skaterJelly

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi @@EmilieT It appears that the 1:1 selector will put you at the maximum magnification which you can then lock focus with IS using your auto focus.

    On manual focus i have 20% sharp images. But when i switched to Continues AF, nearly 70% of my photos become sharp. So MF not for everybody and every gear.
