Despite being the only shot that you have total control of because you literally toss the ball to yourself, the pickleball serve can be an elusive shot for many.
Generating a lot of power onto a ball that is just sitting there and has no energy on it to begin with is a tougher skill than most people realize.
You do not get any kind of help from incoming speed that you can use as rebound power.
You have to generate all your own power and put it into the ball. Hitting it hard with precision can be a tall order.
In this video we cover the 5 key tips to an effective and powerful Pickleball serve. If your serve seems off then we’d bet it’s probably due to one of these 5 things now. Learn what they are, apply them to your serve and start dominating the service box.

This video is HUGELY helpful. I’ve watched it several times and cannot wait to employ these techniques. I have seen so many different serves on the court, including backhand serves. This serve leaves little room for error. Your fluidity is very impressive and what I strive for also. THANK YOU for this!

I had the world’s most inconsistent serve. I hit some balls and stopped for a break and watched your video. I only got through using your full body and not just your arm. All of a sudden, my serves were consistent. Even the lousy ones made it into the right court. I only just started a couple of months ago, but needed to get this right. Thank you.🎉🎉🎉

What do you think about these additional 2 tips: (1) Have "a pre-serve routine" and do it every time before you serve. For example, bounce the ball with your non-paddle hand 2 times or hit the ball to the ground with your paddle 3 times. Basically, it's something to focus on and to clear your mind before you start the serve. and (2) Breathe. I take a single deep breath before the serve to relax the body and again, focus and clear the mind. I find these 2 additional tips very helpful and have used similar strategies in other sports.

Hey, Sue a pre serve routine is great. I would suggest doing it after you call the score; because in a refed game you will need to wait for the score to be called before serving. I have seen some player start their pre serve routine before they announce their score.

What do we do with the eyes, Do we focus on the ball with our eyes or do we focus where we want the serve to go? I have tried both ways and actually find I can place where I want to the serve to to (opponents forehand, backhand, drop, or baseline) better by focusing on where I want to place the ball in the opponents court. Please comment.

So. I put this into effect! I was still having one issue though - on the Ad side I seem to constantly serve directly in front of me (instead of diagonally) and lose a lot of serves as a result. Worked with a few different advanced players and still keep having the same problem no matter whether I served from the middle of the court, all the way to the side, tried a drop serve vs serving the ball out of my hand etc. Finally my engineer-husband, who barely plays, said "why don't you just turn your body sideways more " in between bites of a sandwich. Like, this was such an obvious solution to him he didn't even stop chewing. Well all I'll be darned. I tried that right away and bam. 95% of my serves are going in the correct place now. Good grief. It took an engineer to fix my angle. So the next time you have a student serving too wide - especially on a particular side of the court - just have them turn their body slightly. what a big difference.

Thank you for these 5 techniques that you have shown. When you demonstrate the tip about not starting your serve so high, you look a bit uncomfortable starting at hip height the first time. If you watch the video in all the other tips, your swing is up between shoulder and ear height. You should be consistent, and either change your swing height or change the video tip and say to start your swing higher.

  • @primetimepickleball

For newer players, starting at the hip is a great way to go. As you progress in your serving abilities, your backswing and paddle head speed will increase. When you’re just starting out, keeping it as compact as you can is really important.

This is kind of a relative question, although for me (if my time could allow it) I would like to have 3 days a week of intense drilling (working on maximizing my strengths and improving my weaknesses) of 3-4 hours each time, and also 2 days a week of intense competitive play 3-4 hours per session. So this would be around 15-20 hours a week. If you have a good local coach that knows what they’re talking about and that can help you, that would be good to add as well.

Is there a disadvantage to dropping the ball and hitting it on the bounce for the serve? Also, I just started so let me know if that's legal. Ha I just find I'm super consistent when I let it bounce and treat it like a forehand.

  • @primetimepickleball

It's legal. It's called a drop serve. As long as you can consistently get it in and deep then go for it. The only disadvantage is that you will never get as high of a contact point as you can with a traditional toss. You can be more offensive with a higher contact.

Jordan, this is a keeper. I was a TERRIBLE server for quite a while, drop serve actually saved me. I've since REBUILT my serve from grip to stance and even drop. I'd love to send video of what I do and teach. Try doing/coaching your 5th suggestion but let the ball "drop" and hit low to high it's VERY effective for intermediate and advanced players. The other thing is that beginning to low intermediate players are afraid to HIT the ball!!! I have to remind them over and over to HIT IT!! once they see it go in they understand... I'm doing about 50% of my lessons just on serve.. I used to think it wasn't a big deal but I'm changing my thoughts on that more n more... Are you coaching at a private club/resort?? Or have you found a location that has courts available??? Believe it or not, San Diego has NOTHING!! finding courts is a big issue for coaching..

  • @primetimepickleball

    @primetimepickleball

    2 жыл бұрын

Hey Kevin, thanks for all these awesome insights. Yeah, lots of players struggle with the serve which is interesting because it's the only shot that one has total control of. Yes, it can be tough to find courts to teach on. Hopefully with more courts popping up all over that will help but there are also loads more players popping up all over. Maybe try to get in with a club if you can cut a good deal, that way you'll always have court access. A lot of people also have success with local courts that have a booking system. Jordan now has his own backyard court in Arizona so that has made things easier on him.

Start by "serving" from up in the court. Maybe even all the way up at the NVZ line. Aim in the middle of the box. Once you've got that down. Take two steps back. Get good from there. Take two more steps back. Get good from there. Keep doing that until you find yourself behind the baseline. Building up your siill in progression this way can solve a lot of problems.

When he slows it down to emphasize how to move the paddle, he looks like he is putting it in fast forward and reverse. It confuses me each time!

Your “closed” stance position is really more of a square/ neutral stance.

Please settle of source of contention within our pickleball club: True or False? In pickleball, there is no such thing as a legal serve with backspin because it is physically impossible to impart backspin on a serve without violating the Low to High rule.

I think it can be a legal serve. Although the low to high motion is probably not the biggest problem. I think the rule where your paddle has to be below the wrist during contact may be a bigger problem. Record whoever is trying to do this, and watch it back in slomo. Remember, the 3 main important rules when serving is: 1. A low to high motion 2. Contact below the naval 3. Paddle below the wrist We may do a video on this, thanks for the comment!

hahaha oh humans, some of us sure are funny. "..get to the point" well Sue, the point of this video is to learn how to serve, right? To do so one must explain and preferably also show/demonstrate which is the format of KZread videos. Dont see where you see any dragged out section but yeah sure, they are sure making BANK on that (potentially) 1 min longer video.
