In my opinion (and in my sewing room) there’s a difference between a scrap quilt, where I only use authentic scraps and don’t cut any yardage from my stash, and a “scrappy” quilt where I use a precut like a layer cake or a charm pack with complimentary fabrics from my stash. I definitely pay more attention to color and value when I’m making a scrappy quilt. Maybe Kris would call that a controlled scrap quilt? For an authentic “scrap” quilt I give myself lots of grace for the fabric combinations that makes up the patchwork to be downright wild. My ideal rule is not to use the same fabric twice in a scrap quilt, but that’s often out of reach so my more achievable rule is not to repeat a fabric in a block and never let the same fabric touch. Angela Walters once said that scrappy quilts are crappy quilts, but I know on this channel scrappy quilts are happy quilts! Thanks for the video, I always enjoy seeing your quilts!

Great tips! Thank you for sharing your process. I love quilting for this very reason--there are so many different ways to do things, including scrappy quilts. ❤️ Did Angela Walters really say that? That' so disappointing. I love her, but I also love scrappy quilts. To me, they are amazing and not crappy at all. But again, to each their own, I guess! Thanks again for explaining your process! It is great!

Love scrap quilts, too. My last one was a crumb quilt, where I've sewn all crumbs in a rainbowy (not really rainbow but colour coordinated) on adding maschine tape and put the 2.5 strips in a spiral. To give the eyes some rest I added a very narrow strip (0.5 inch finished) of a dark solid colour in between the rainbow spiral. For the back I used up nearly all my orphan blocks, test blocks and so on. That is a true "everything goes" afterquilt 😅 I'm fearing the quilting a bit, but the sandwich is made and I'll start soon (just one more project on the to-quilt-list). Thanks for your tips. I think the "make a rule" tip is really key.

My pleasure! Love this! Thank you for sharing your process! The dark solid with the rainbow spiral? OHHHHH! I am sure it is amazing! 🥰 I love that you made an afterquilt, too! Once you start quilting, that fear will subside. Just remember that one or two quilting lines may not be perfect, but once you add a bunch of quilting lines, you'll never notice the wonky ones, if you have any. Love this! Thanks so much for sharing! ❤️

Scrap quilts are my favorite, as they are a nod to my grandmothers who raised large families during The Depression, and they used whatever fabric they could to make quilts to be used during cold Midwest winters. I prefer a controlled color palette when I’m working on a scrap quilt, it’s not so jumbled if you’re working with just 5-6 colors. Would love to hear more tips!

Awesome tips! Value is definitely important. And I agree with controlled scrappiness - I call it controlled chaos :) Mostly because I do not like to do "random" fabrics. And do a test block!! I had thrifted some really pretty batiks for next to nothing and I knew I had some other batiks that would look lovely with it, however when I made a few test blocks I realized that they were all the same value (more or less) and the fabrics got "lost" - so I picked the batik with the most colors in it and found some dark and light fabric that went well with the main fabric. It made such a difference! I went from 3 fabrics to 21 lol I did the free pattern from Jordan Fabrics Hip to be Square (which is an awesome beginner quilt pattern) all my 3 daughters are getting a quilt for Christmas (same pattern) but different fabric and they all look so different. (also, the book you showed can be bought used on Amazon for decent prices!)

Thank you so much! I am thrilled you like these tips. Love your ideas and sharing your process with the batiks. I have certainly been there! I didn't mention in this video, but have mentioned it others--always make a test block! So true! I think I put the Amazon link in the description, as well. Since it is out of print, it is selling used for between $25-$70 on there. Still a bit pricey, but the lower end of the scale is worth it. Thanks again for sharing and watching! ❤️

oh, I have that book too! I also bought it on the internet used. I also love scrap quilts best, thought I have made several patterned ones - which give some great scraps. I love your first scrap quilt, love the colors. Color values has been the hardest thing for me. Value is critical for a scrap quilt to look best, I've made the mistakes enough to know. And I look and look and look at other's quilt, study their color patterns and combinations. The Christmas quilt idea of the lattice color consistently completely finished it. Generally I will use a shade of black or tan. On a children's quilt I use a brighter color. Mostly, I like the shades of the civil war time. I really like your channel, it helps me to think and remember I don't do so bad after all. Thanks

Yay! I am so glad my videos are helpful! That's what it is all about for me. I want to help quilters as best as I can. I can be opinionated, however, so please keep that in mind. 😂 There are so many ways to make a quilt! Although I talk a lot about value, I still struggle with it, too. It is tricky! I just took another class that focused on color. So interesting! It is fascinating how color works. I love seeing quilts with a black background. I haven't made one yet, but I want to. I love the idea of flipping the values with the darker fabrics in the background. It has a wonderful effect! Thank you so much for your kind works, for watching, and for sharing. 🥰

I love charm style (No repeats) scrap (only use what wasn’t used in a previous project or was donated to the cause) scrappy (cut a strip/string off of my fat quarters/yardage for variety), & controlled scrappy quilts?(sticking with one genre - 30’s or fabric designer). I 100% agree with the parts about value, but in a scrap quilt I ignore it - depends on the desired outcome. I study “this old quilt” and “unusual & unexpected” quilts and then try to add my own spin.

I've become much more into scrap quilts lately. I've currently got 3 different ones in the works, two are Anything Goes and one is Controlled Scrappy. one is a Bowtie quilt using the same solid background throughout (Bella Solids "Honey") and any and all scraps for the bowtie. Jenny Doan had a gorgeous one hanging on the wall in her Bowtie video from about 10 years ago - on that one "Cheddar" was used as the background color. The blocks are only 4" finished and can be arranged many different ways. I'm also cutting squares in an ongoing project which will eventually be Fallon's "Scrap Explosion" quilt. The third one is Contolled scrappy using teals/aquas (my favorite colors) for a controlled QAYG demo'd by Karen Brown.

Hi Chris, new to your channel. Your teaching points are valuable and your explanations are easy to remember. I love the idea "give fabrics a friend". I just thought of a twist on the friend idea that will help me. I do that when selecting fabrics for a quilt. If my main fabric has a smidge (!) of a color I can use for contrast, emphasis etc., I look for another fabric that has the color or quality I am looking for....a friend that will play well with the main fabric. Some friends are quiet (background fabric). Some friends are the center of attention (fabrics where your eye is drawn to). Would love to hear your other tips for scraps.

if i may add a tip... many colors that seem like they clash can be fixed by adding more variety. like... have you ever tried matching purples? its a nightmare... but while 3 purples that dont work together well just loo awful! 15 purples - even if they all class in groups of small numbers) work. i have seen this in action many times with dresden plate and tonal scrap quilts... 2 reds, greens or etc that dont play well together? suddenly just blend in to the crowd when you have ten or more

Great video; love your tips. Please make a followup with your other tips! Agree with all your tips. Love the controlled scrappy approach. Been working to use up an inherited stash. Because it was acquired over decades with many cute OOP fabrics in older color ways I’ve come up with some strategies in making scrappy quilts with that stash: 1) Sell or donate fabrics that aren’t my style. 2) Group fabrics by theme: holidays, reproduction (by era so feed sacks are separate from 19th century etc), batiks, children’s, modern, floral, fall and solids or blenders. I also divide out metallics from non-metallic each of these categories. 3) Large pieces are grouped with their categories. Small and odd pieces are cut down to usable sizes which for me are: 2 inch strips, 2 1/2 inch strips, squares in 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5 and 9.5. I’ll group them in labeled plastic bags with their themes. 4) If needed, I’ll buy the background fabric or a border to tie it all together. 5) Favorite classic blocks: half square triangles in streak of lightning layout, churn dash, buckeye, light crossing dark Irish chain and split rail fence. Having fun with these fabrics and scrappy quilt blocks are great for using every last scrap! Thank you!!!❤

Great tips! Thank you so much for sharing! I am participating in Scrap Summit through The Ruffled Purse where I talk about how I organize my scraps. I no longer do number 3 on your list, but I used to. I found I never used the scraps when they were precut. I now make my own precut bundles (I have a few videos on how to do this). I tend to use them much more than when I had stacks for precut sizes. That said, we are all so different and need to find a way that works for us! Sounds like you have a great system! Thanks again for sharing and thank you for watching. ❤️

Really when it comes to design, quilts made with layer cakes, jelly rolls or charm packs are “controlled scrap quilts.” You can look at fabric lines to see how to combine scraps to create your own scrap “line” to use in your quilts using your leftovers. :)

I just finished this video and also the video about quilting under $20 where you use the beach towel for a back and it got me to thinking that after the holidays, there is usually a huge clearance sale on fleece-based throw blankets. Do you think I could do a scrappy quilt with a fleece throw backing on the cheap? Or will fleece not sew well to the top? Is beach towel a better idea? I am just new to quilting and am looking to not spend much because my quilts don't yet turn out in quite the way I intended, and I just hate to throw good money into a nice batting and back when I don't super love the top in the first place.

  • @SewtheDistance

    @SewtheDistance

    9 ай бұрын

Thank you so much for watching these videos! Also, welcome to quilting! Fleece blankets are a great idea, but as a new quilter, I would caution about using them because they stretch. You can stitch around the edges before using them to get them to stay better, but overall, they are trickier to work with. Towels are a bit more stable, but honestly, since you are new to this wonderful hobby, you may want to stick with cotton for now. To save money, you can buy extra-wide backings, which are cost effective and easy to use. You can get them at Joann fabric or at most quilt shops, too, if you are interested in a slightly better quality. I like buying them online from Keepsake Quilting. You can get three yard bundles. They are 108" wide vs. the traditional 40" - 44" wide that you get with regular quilter's cotton. At some point, once you have made a few quilts, you could give throws a try! And if you are feeling brave, you could try it know. Just know they can be stretchy. I hope this helps! Please feel free to ask any questions! I am happy to help you. If you don't want to do it publicly, feel free to email me at sewthedistance@gmail.com. 🥰

  • @SewtheDistance

Hi! I should have mentioned it. Sorry! Value refers to how light or dark a color is. I show an example of it in this video at 5:42 when I show the black and white version of a quilt. It is hard to trust your eye, however, so using either a black and white image or a tool called a ruby beholder (red film) helps. You can post a picture in my facebook group, if you'd like! Also, value isn't the end all, be all for scrap quilts. It is just something that can make your quilts look better, at least in my opinion. I am sure your quilt is beautiful as is, especially if you love it! That's what really matters! I hope this helps! ❤️

I use books, the internet, etc. and still struggle sometimes. I love the books "Dating Fabric" (I will add a link below), but they are out of print. One clue that may help is the width of the fabric (selvedge to selvedge). Before 1950, the width was 36". Hope this helps!
