I'm starting a new job as an outpatient hospice nurse a week from Monday, leaving the OR that I tried for a little over a year. I am just not mean enough to work in the OR lol Hospice has always been in the back of my mind over my 14 years of nursing. I've worked the floor in the hospital as well, along with acute rehab, management and a very brief stint of traveling. You know how they always play the lullaby when a baby is born? I've always felt sad that a death isn't also acknowledged. Your mention of how "some might think this is weird" really resonates with me and thanks for saying it. I've had kind of a hard time explaining how drawn I am to this kind of service as a nurse. It sounds super weird to people that I am EXCITED to start this job, that I really want to be there to help in this time of life for people. I finally feel like I am starting a job I can really be invested in, and not just marking time to earn a check. I know I've got the Pollyanna, rose goggles on right now, but I'm carrying a lot of interest and really strong views about how death has been taken away from families over the last 100 years and handed to hospitals and funeral homes..and I hope to be a help and a change. I can honestly say, I've never been interested enough in a field of nursing that I've been up late at night searching youtube vids to help me prepare. Thanks for putting this out there..gobbling it up!

It’s great to hear you say when ppl ask you how to you do this . I get the same question all the time. I feel the same way I look At death differently and that I’m able to help them through it and keep them comfortable.

I'm a newer hospice nurse..1.5 years.I definitely get the questions..how do you do it..It takes a special person.me: I am that special person🥰..I love hospice..I feel like I'm there when my pts of family feel alone or like no one cares or afraid..I treat them with dignity during life and after death😇such a beautiful thing to care for someone so gently instead of throwing pt away because they are not well..

Chart at the home. Do not leave that patient's house without charting. That way when you arrive at the next patient's house, you can devote your entire attention to them. And when you get off, you can be off. And leave your work at your work. Very important to your mental health to have home life be home life.

I wouldn't recommend it but yes you can. I would get some Med Surg under you first and get your head to toe assessments down. If you are the RN you are alone out there with the patient, so you really need good knowledge and assessments.

I'm a new nurse, was an HHA before, been a hospice RN for 1 month now, it's a lot of new information and pressure. You must know s/s of impending death, what diseases not only qualify, but what kind of labs, meds, etc you need to look at for that pertaining hospice dx, already have some sort of idea of dosages and medications for certain things, know palliative vs hospice, know whats consider aggressive tx vs life-sustaining measures, and all other things like general inpatient, know what contracts with which facilities, make sure consents and orders are in, etc. A lot!

I know it's too late now for the OP, but for any other new grad: you really and truly need to get your med/surg experience before you branch out anywhere. That doesn't always mean the MS floor exactly. You can get it on Neuro, Tele, ICU..any hospital nursing that will take new grads. But truly, you need those assessment skills and that practice at basic nursing skills before you branch out. Unless you 110% know you want to do something like case management or OR, and stay there forever, there is just no skipping that first couple of years of actually learning nursing.
