One of the most underrated players in history (behind Gary Player), Thomson won 5 British Opens, including one in 1965 against Americans Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Tony Lema. He won 28 times on the European Tour, 33 times on the Australasian Tour, and to prove a point came over to the States to play on the Senior Tour in 1985 and won 9 times. The swings you see here are evidence of Thomson’s stellar technique. Starting with a strong grip, especially in the right hand, Thomson planed the club beautifully and transitioned with perfect sequence. As did most players of his era he employed a slightly lifted left heel and a significant amount of lateral movement in transition and into the forward swing while keeping his hips deep and perfectly “in the box”. One interesting note is his tendency to move his hips to the right in the backswing, what would be called a “sway” by most of today’s instructors (including me) but made up for it by maintaining a braced right foot and by recovering immediately by planting the left heel and sliding laterally to the left while turning the pelvis counter-clockwise. Thomson’s footwork is exemplary, and the overall rhythm and efficiency of his swing would be great for anyone to try to emulate.

Pete never used a caddies advice said this game should be played alone like a pool player ever see them with a caddie
If anyone has the time, search out Michael Clayton's obituary of Peter. He lived in St Andrews for many British summers and moved around the town hassle free. Far too modest for his talent. Clayton's called him " a god among golfers and a prince among men". He said his fondest memory of The Open was watching his mate Kel Nagle win in 1960. RIP Pete. Kel is waiting for you on the tee.

You know Wayne he hit the ball very low during those 9 senior tour wins. He talks about that in his last interview before he passed. The ball was a Dunlop and he said it was the shortest of their line. They only made it one year then stopped. I loved how low he hit his shots! Cool way to play

I He could control his distances well in the wind with his low flight as he kept ball out of wind.

Michael Kennedy I really was impressed in the mid eighties with his swing he was great. I never forgot it. Watch his interview it’s interesting
My Pro Boss told me (late 90s) how in a major Australian Tournament in late the late 70's/early 80s, Thomson, who was post 50 years, sent his young caddy to find out what the cut would be and what score he would need on the back 9 (at the Australian golf club) to make the cut. He needed 2 under. So he shot 2 under. Simple!

Thanks Wayne he is one of my favourites a lot of similarities with hogan.If it is not the left knee or hip to start the downswing are you saying it is the shifting of weight and planting of the left foot.
How does he get the rotation while managing to stay behind the ball

Like hogan he says he replants his left foot which pulls his hip around and then his hands come down on the same path they went up on.I Will try a stronger grip and same sequence and see how it goes
Great under rated swing......only won the British 5 times

He certainly looks like he pulls his arms down while his back faces the target but when he talks about it on the L P he made this is not what he is trying to do.
