On some watches you can't drop it, or do anything very physical without potentially damaging the movement.
The sweeping second hand is the best reason to get a mechanical watch
@nutmegdonkey
Жыл бұрын
They make sweeping quartz watches too, their Seiko movements called mecca quartz, however it can't quite replicate a high beat.28,800 vph auto movement that you see In lower mid to high end movements it looks more like a cheaper 21,800 vph, however the longevity of an automatic movement is many multiples of that of a quartz , could easily last 100 years if properly serviced whereas best case scenario the quartz electronic components will be fried in 30 , albeit you can likely just replace the quartz movement that's not guranteed to be the case , imo the best thing about watches in general is they're something that's made to last, made to be an heirloom in a world where everything is disposable 😊

Second thing is, they will still work after hundreds of years and if one part breaks you don’t have to replace the whole movement. Keep most of it original and past it down from generations to generations

a good rule of thumb is to put some wind in the watch every few weeks to keep the oil nice and smooth. Watch winders aren’t necessary but preventative maintenance like monthly winds sure help
I love quartz watch. I have an automatic Seiko and I have set it every time I pick it up. Eventually I stopped bothering and wore it as an accessory. I used my phone to tell time. Then I bought a quartz Casio watch and fell in love with watches.

7 or 10 year battery casios just make so much sense and if you dont treat them like shit they will last for a very long time too
Bought a watch winder because looks fucking sick, it was only 30$
I have been messing with watches for about 40 years and I have all my watches well regulated and the most accurate one I have at the moment loses a half a second a month. It took me a month to regulate it. First on the timegrapher then wore it and fine tuned it and I am very pleased with the results. My closest one gains 3 seconds and month. Most of my mechanical watches are more accurate than cheap quartz watches. Like one quartz gains .2 seconds a day which is 6 seconds a month but I have some really nice quartz and they are still dead on after a year. But luckily I do my own work so when one needs a service then I will service it.

@@adrianpaul3749 that’s well known. You can use your phone also but I enjoy having a tiny mechanical wonder on my wrist. A quart is just silicone plastic and a battery.
i mean if your mechanical watch is an inexpensive Seiko 5, the service cost won't gonna be that high. for my personal example, the average price for a movement cleaning and overhaul service is only around $30 USD here in Indonesia

Wow, i'm an owner of a seiko 5 myself, and i'm currently living in Jakarta, where did you service your watch? Gotta check that $30 service center haha
I remember Dad asking me to wind his Longines for him every few days. I thought it was the coolest thing winding a watch can keep it going for days. Today, I wind my Hamilton mechanical with the same enthusiasm
I wind my automatics at the beginning and the middle of each month if they haven't been in my latest rotation.
Even with wind-up watches, just wind it every morning when you put it on and it's fine.
A Lot of newbies don't know these facts and ppl just expect everyone to know bout em
I just really like the symbiodic idea of "I tell you the time if you give me energy" ❤
Not a big time watch guru but there's just something about a mechanical watch i have a relic skeleton automatic being able to see it working is so cool not saying ill never get a quartz watch but if it comes in both I'm going for the mechanical version
Thanks for the info. I have to rethink bout getting automatic watch. The 1 I'm using now is cheap discounted fossil that use seiko quartz movement.
I saw a seagul 1963, that’s my personal favorite!
Facts. You only need the winder if you have a watch that’s a pain in the ass to reset. Or if you like wear ten watches a week. I don’t wear my nice watch all the time but it’s not a big deal to wind it every now and then. Old Rolex’s with dates like mine can take a long time to set.
So the cheap quartz watches are better than the expensive mechanical watches in the one thing watches are supposed to do: telling time accurately 😅 I can accept that in a mechanical watch where I can actually see the mechanics move, since this looks absolutely awesome but if it's a watch where you can't see the movements I don't really see the point in an expensive mechanical watch 🤷🏻♂️

Depends on your purpose. I got tired of paying increasing prices for a simple new battery when I didn’t have a case back tool. Having learned enough to service a mechanical watch, I could keep my Orient automatic going indefinitely.

Why buy a Mercedes when you can get a Toyota?
Thank you for the insightful information, much appreciated and keep the great awesome work you do. Curious what your thoughts are on the Hamilton X Wind? Probably only mechanical auto watch I’ll ever buy and own, love the chronograph and a nice tasteful blend of new and vintage aesthetics. Yes I know it’s a beefy, chunky watch but still love it. My second choice would be the Victorinox air boss Mach 9 auto, however I feel it’s a little too big and about $500-$1000 more expensive depending on where you shop and buy from. I clearly have an aviation theme going on here, lol. Just curious what your take is? Many Thanks.
Bought my mechanical watch before the pandemic for $400, still works perfect and a rarely have to rewind the spring.

a 400 dollars mechanical watch sure as shit is supposed to run well after 4 years bro
Servicing a mechanical watch costs 5 dollars in India. A full disassembly, cleaning, reassembly and lubrication. If you want your dial to be reprinted as well it shoots up to 12 dollars.
I saw one KZreadr explain that some older style automatics don't have a manual winding feature. So, they use a watch winder for when they were planning on reviewing one of those watches or planning on wearing it, in order to winde it up. So my question is, how common is it that a current automatic watch will or won't have a manual winding function?
I am good with my casio vintage watch

How do you like that zi zuan? I've really been wanting one! Where did you get it? I wanna find a good deal on one.
If it has a Seiko NH35/36 movement inside you can replace the whole movement for half the price of a service
Can you wind automatic watch everyday if you dont wear it that often ?
So what happens if you don't use it for a week? Will it start working again when you put it on? I'm thinking about getting the Citizen Tsuyousa, but I've never had an automatic watch.

G-shock casioak (ga-2100). Digital and analog reads, durable, extra features like light, alarm, dual.time, date, etc. $100, less if on sale. Lots of colour ways, and options to mod with different cases and bands. Great for every day use and you won't be worried about it knocking around, getting wet, servicing it down the line, etc. I say this having both casioak and an automatic, and like 6 smart watches.

It is the resetting of the date when a mechanical watch is picked up after it stops that is the annoyance for me.
These mechanical marvels have souls. That's why you need to wear them. Overtime you'll embed memories on them ,and that alone is very impactful. everytime you took a glance on your watch . it never just tell you time. It tell your memories, your life
It’s also an expensive option
No you don't need a winder, but if you have a collection of watches and you wear a different one ever day, when you have to set the time, day, and date of a mechanical watch every time you want to wear it because it's stopped running since you last wore it, you end up just not wearing it as much. Considering you can find multi-watch winders for under 100 bucks, I think they are worth buying.

There's no issues with quartz, quartz are great. But it's like buying a manual car vs an automatic car. The automatic is probably easier to drive, more realiable, easier to fix. But the manual, in some ways, might be more fun

battery swap costs less than 10 dollars even if you take it to a watch repair shop. If you replace them yourself(dead easy) and buy a pack of 10 batteries, the cost is pretty much negligible

@@adrianpaul3749 unfortunately in my country its $10 for battery, $20 for installation and $70 for seal replacement and pressure testing every 12 months. Total of $100. Yes I do them myself and run the risk that the seal is still good. However, .... Complete service of automatic watch is currently $275 to $450 and is done every 3-5years. I own both and don't get me wrong a quartz is a great way to start. But there is reason the elite brands are automatic. I've lost expensive midrange watches because of a faulty leaking battery. Great paperweight.
Can you damage an automatic watch by winding it if it’s the type not meant to be wound?
@noobfl
8 ай бұрын
no, you cant.. if your automatic watch is not build for hand winding (like older Seiko 5 movements), there is no connection between the crownstem and the mainspring.

#6 a quartz movement (if it can be called that) has no intrinsic value (a few exceptions), other than the case.
I have a mechanical watch that watch is pinpoint accurate as my Casio digital youth series watch
It’s not accurate because they are electrically powered. It’s accurate because they use quartz technology. Electrically powered movement like dynotron is not as accurate as quartz, or any other mechanical watch.
If society breaks down, i want a watch that doesn't need a battery. A watch that i can service myself if need be, and it can operate for up to 100 years with care.
I hate mechanical watch. I would rather go solar powered with battery. less pain and cost less. i go casio g shock.
Mechanical watches, don’t use batteries what, I do not understand
Aytomatic watches are the deal if you have a nattery watch get an automatic one asap
"The watch ticks multiple times per second." (Shows spring drive that does not tick at all.)
Not always more accurate 😅 I’ve got 2 mechanical watches and several quartz watches.. one of my quartz watches loses 15 minutes every hour… my automatic watches lose around 10 seconds a day

That quartz one is broken af. Statistically unlikely with a quality movement but it's gotta happen to someone. That being said, I did buy a quartz watch off Wish for 2 dollars for the strap it came on and the hands didn't always move when they were supposed to. Edit: I forgot, I actually have a broken discontinued Seiko solar chronograph that I'm really mad about. I guess I tossed it from memory for a reason.
Yes, quartz is more accurate, but just like a ginger they don’t have a soul!
"Gernally less accurate than quartz watches". No, automatic watches are ALWAYS less accurate than quartz watches, and by a very wide margin.
