All great points to consider before buying or building an AR-9. One other point is the option for Last-Round-Bolt-Hold-Open (LRBHO). Some receivers have it and some don't so decide if its important for you before you buy.

One thing I didn't hear mentioned is the relationship between Barrel Length and the BCG weight, Buffer Weight and Spring. I found the usual 16" barrel cycled ok with the standard 5 to 8oz buffer using a light carbine spring. With the same lower setup and going to a 5" barrel I predicted less blowback which would require a lighter buffer and or spring. Keep in mind the BCG weight combined with the buffer weight is what's being driven back so a light or heavy spring needs to be factored into the equation to happily absorb the energy without crashing into the back of the buffertube and cycle the return . The BCG weight is a constant but the buffer weight and spring weight choices are what is needed to calculate the balance of blowback gases . After Bang... the BCG weight combined with buffer weight accelerating against the spring and coming back is what your after. Simply choosing a heavier buffer without Identifying the BCG weight and spring weight is a huge headache. It takes a bit of research to find the correct combo in order to have a reliably cycling firearm

Read a long article about buffer weight. Bottom line is the combined weight of your bolt and buffer needs to be between 22 and 24 oz. Must use PCC buffer, they are longer. I have 2 PCC. I use a flat wire spring from David Tubbs and one from Springco both work great.

I have a 4” and an 8” complete upper from PSA. I’m in California and you have to do a build to have a PCC. I’ve put them on AR15 lowers. Use PCC buffer and flat wire buffer springs. PSA bolts are 14 oz, combined weight of bolt and buffer should be 22 to 24 oz if I’m reading correct information.

I picked up several years ago a very early Lone Wolf R&D dedicated 9mm using Glock mags lower with a YHM Black Diamond 9mm upper 16" barrel using a CMMG BCG. Guy couldn't get it right so I took it off his hands. Took some experimenting with buffer weight using and Odin adjustable buffer ending up at 7.4 oz, a few quarters in the back of the buffer tube to limit how far back the BCG travels. Took some tweaking and working but now it is reliable and fun!

I picked up a standard AR magwell conversion to run the Colt mags, picked up a Foxtrot Mike upper, primarily to be able to run a 9mm rifle while waiting on the new Mean Arms upper which actually will run on a standard AR-15 buffer as it's a ball bearing delayed upper plus you just run Exo/Endo mags . Finally decided to just build two SMF Colt mag specific lowers for each rifle and in the end I may build a .40 and a .45 which would be a hot little home defense number, not that a 9mm from a 16" isn't about as hot as a .357 Magnum from a 6" barrel which is a definite manstopper.

I ended up chosing the endo Mag option because I had 3 unused 556 PMAGs and I already had two Aero Precision M4E1 lowers that were shooting 556 and 300blk. I added the PSA PCC 9mm complete upper and will use with the 556 lower. Plannning to add Omega 36m to the mix.

Great video guys. My second decision is if I want a last round bolt hold open(LRBHO) feature. There are basically two types,. One is built into the lower receiver, and second the upper receiver. I've done both types for 9mm, and 45acp. The cost of the lower is going to be much higher having an LRBHO built in($279 Angstadt Arms, Spikes $159). Any upper will work with these. These are the easiest, but add $125 or more to the build. The lowers without LRBHO are cheaper(Aero $119, Frontier $139). The uppers are a little more though(Aero Precision $119, Frontier $139). The uppers that have LRBHO mechanism have to be adjusted for your magazines, unless you strictly use Glock mags. PMag use requires adjustment. I've found it easier to adjust with the barrel not installed. They are all a blast to shoot.

I recently saw a video from Delta about the new Davidson Defense upper receiver called called the "Vertex" especially designed for 9mm. Should I order this, or will all upper receivers work? I want the LRBHO function. I called Spikes about their lower receiver you mentioned above and they did not think their lower with LRBHO feature will work on the Davidson Defense uppers. You said it does-correct?

  • @drewt1081

@@charlestompkins4547 I believe there are only a few "generic" uppers. I've seen that exact upper with a few different manufacturers names. I have not used this upper, but I've used a few that are identical, from other sites with Spikes lowers, and no problems. If your building a blowback 9mm, feed ramps are built into the barrels, so no real reason to not work. I've used AR Stoner(my favorite), NBS, And Dirty Bird uppers, and they are all very similar.

without a doubt one of the definitive pcc built vids on the net. tank you so much for the info. ive been kicking around the idea of building a pcc for a while. ive just recently gotten very serious about it. i think im gonna go ahead and get it done. been debating whether i need to build a .308 dmr platform or a pcc in 9mm. i think ive decided to put off the dmr build for a while and focus on the pcc. thank you for all the info i had no idea about. looks like im going with a 9mm specific lower. i dont wanna deal with attachment's and other options that are just possible fail points. but its nice to know they are out there. . i knew there had to be bigger and heavier options out there. thanks for all you do, great video.

I've built a couple 9mm PCCs that are vastly different from each other. Pick a brand, contact the company and do some homework before you build. Proper planning prevents a piss poor product. I built a CMMG banshee on a standard lower that takes converted M4 mags and a New Frontier Armory with a dedicated Glock mag lower. Both run extremely well on a variety of loads, suppressed and unsuppressed.

I (somewhat) disagree with immediately going with the Glock mag platform. The Colt mag is a double-stack, double-feed mag and is MUCH easier and faster to load, are very reliable if you buy a decent brand, and insert into the magwell *straight*, not at an angle. This means your reload drills are as close to your rifle-caliber AR as possible and you don't have to think about the angled insertion when seconds may count.

PSA 9mm 4” or 8” upper and use EndoMags. Has LRBH its on the magazine insert. EndoMags don’t work on all 9mm uppers that’s why you’ll see negative reviews. But they are flawless with the PSA uppers. EndoMags only work with MagPull 30 round magazines

Buffers. Go long pcc AND HEAVY. 8 Oz or more. I did see a formula forum guys recommended a few years ago weighing both your BCG and your buffer and coming up with a total Oz. I forget what that total number was. I can tell you a foxtrot Mike BCG weight plus a 8 oz buffer will get you in that target weight. AR Stoner and Guntec and many others make a buffer in this weight.(for a REASON) Some people suggest a 308 spring but I never had any problem with 3ars with the 8 oz buffer and a regular AR spring. Some 9 mm Barrels have feed issues with feeding and jams. I have two older ones that I had to add taccom feed ramps to. My last barrels from Rainier Arms feeds anything without any problem. I heard taccom barrels are the ultimate but any other ar9 Barrel seems good as well. The two barrels that I put the feed ramps on will eat anything you throw at them. Hollow-points Steelcase it doesn't matter. But then again my new Barrel will do that too without the added feed ramp. Some internet experts criticize me for using the feed ramps but they fixed all the problems immediately with failure to feed. (Maybe their barrels didn't have this issue, I want my ar9 to feed 100% all the time no matter what I put in it) This is a new frontier though be careful and expect setbacks. In my case scouring the internet and old forums help me get through this very quickly. Had I not done that I would have had a drawer full of extra parts by now

In building a dozen or so 9mm AR's I've found that if I use a good heavy BCG (I prefer one using a 556 extractor), a 6 oz or heavier extended buffer, 308 buffer spring I don't have any issues. I've used standard uppers without a problem although I do agree with the looks of a slab side upper being better than the traditional mil spec. As for thread pitch 1/2-28 works well with most 9mm suppressors and that's why it's becoming standard, I would also note with a blow back system you are not making a pipe bomb, but you will stack bullets in the barrel :) (I've seen it several times). I'd actually prefer a 5/8-24 thread pitch since most 30 cal suppressors and have a 40 cal through hole, I regularly shoot my 9mm PCC's using my 30 cal can, and almost all 30 cal cans have 5/8-24 threads (direct thread too which is nice).

I Bought Y’all Complete Upper What Else Do I Need Besides The Lower

I have a dedicated glock lower that runs flawlessly. I grabbed some endomags recently for my 556 lower and it seems I’m getting consistent jamming issues of the casing lip getting stuck under my bcg. Think I just need a different bcg with that setup or is it maybe another issue?

Do you know of any dedicated 9mm receivers which accept Beretta mags?
