I kinda disagree with the calling waiters part. When a restaurant is slammed you absolutely HAVE to raise ur hand and even call ur waiter, or they'll never get to that refill or condiment u need, and it's not considered rude at all. Previous waiter, so speaking from experience.

  • @kroganoperator

    @kroganoperator

Once again speaking from experience. I'm pretty sure the waiter would have preferred u called him over rather than deduct from their tip. They live off tips and deductions for mistakes add up.

Then it seems they understand & it's okay.

I know right! In Turkey it is not rude to yell for the waiter/waitress and say "Bakar Mısınız?" (which means excuse me) to call him/her over. I often raise my hand and wave it just for the waiter to see. Its a pretty normal thing and it should be a normal thing. We have the ability to speak so why dont we use it?

Why yelling to order is rude in the US but totally cool in other cultures: Many cultures like Japan are collectivist. The focus is not on a single person, but on the group, to whom a person is beholden. To ask something of another person is fine because a person serves his social group and his peers. In the US or other Western cultures, we are individualist. To ask something of a person is to impose upon their independence. That's why we ask politely and apologize for the inconvenience.

I agree to a degree. I was told by old school waiters etc that is apart of training that a waiter takes care of the group at the table. They are his responsibility. So a part of my problem is companies just want your money now they really do not teach anymore waiters to be attentive to the table. Sigh.....

I went to a Japanese school in Japan from age 11 till 22 when I graduated university and i learned right away to go to the bathroom and blow my nose. In the U.S. it's accepted to blow your nose, but when I did it in Japan people looked at me strange. I also developed asthma at age 12 and had to cough up phlegm but couldn't because of my classmates' disapproval. There was one thing I found in Japanese school that was quite the opposite of this. They almost never cover their mouths when the cough. That spreads a lot of germs quickly. So I don't see what's wrong with blowing your nose. Also I was and still am surprised at how they knock on a bathroom stall door even when you can see feet and the small indicator on the door lock says "In Use." I understand this now as a way of saying hurry up, I'm waiting, rather than checking if someone's in there. You are supposed to knock back when you're in the bathroom stall. It's common courtesy in Japan.

The yelling at your waiter bit is kinda weird. I've always been taught that if you need to get your waiter's attention, you have to command your Table Falcon to fly over and swoop by your waiter's head. Then the waiter uses their Restaurant Mallet to try and smack your Table Falcon onto the designated waiter anvil. At which point the waiter comes over and refills your glass of water.

Unfortunately things aren't really like that anymore. America has become a very stuckup, "holier than thou" country where no one knows how to chill out a little and just treat others with respect. No matter if you're someone's boss, coworker, whatever. The reason countries like Japan maintain the atmosphere they do is because people there are just in their nature, more polite toward one another. I hear Japanese people will most often attempt to speak English to a foreigner if they are American or English, which I'd say could be pretty welcoming, and surprising them by saying you can speak their language is also probably a great idea.

My coworkers and bosses throw parties a lot, raise your hand or just a finger to get a waiters attention is ok in USA, drinking in public is fine depending on the town or county ordinance (look at Key west for one, New orleans for another, and Im not positive but i never got in trouble for drinking in austin TX and i walked past and talked to a few cops on 6th street with a drink in my hand). It's not actually yelling.... It's calling out for the waiters... and it's not just in Japan...... Probably a lot of countries in Asia has this....... We would just shout "something polite"... But we tend to do it in a nice way......And yelling can attract the waiters more accurately without making any eye contact... Not all restaurants are wealthy... and it depends they way you shout... And don't bring traditions into accounts... I'm from Singapore just in case...

I've gotten drunk with my coworkers every Christmas. I did some breakdancing with my company's CEO. We were atrocious but it was really fun. It depends on where you work I guess. It also depends on if you hate your boss or coworkers. I kissed a coworker two years ago. She had a boyfriend. I apologized to her the next day and she said it was okay, but it was awkward for a while. Then the next year when she was single, she kissed me! And I was in a relationship then and... okay I don't know why I delved into that. Anyways. Drinking with coworkers is okay as long as you don't invite the coworker or boss everyone hates.

Very interesting. I think the reason calling to the waitress in the US is considered rude is because they're expected to check on you every few minutes anyway. If you have to call them over it's inferring that they're not doing their job right, or that you're being snotty and entitled to want them more than they're what already doing. It sounds like in Japan it's expected that they're going to leave you alone unless you ask for them, so in that context it makes sense to call for them. It's just a different cultural expectation.

Totally correct. basically, in the US waiters work for the customer, and in Asia they work for the restaurant. Waiters in the US attend to the table much more closely like it's their personal responsibility to make sure you enjoy the meal. and so they get tips from you. in Asia culture, waiters don't get tips since they're paid fully by the restaurant owner. their job is to serve as many customers as possible so you're just one of the many they have to take care of. I'm asian and i was quite surprised at how attentive the waiters are when i visited the US.

I was at a restaraunt where, it seemed to me like they were new, nervous, or inexperienced, or maybe even the manager was egging the waiter on to do this, but we were trying to have our meal but he kept coming over.... and trying to make small talk and conversation. I think in that situation we seriously would have preferred to call out when we needed something. But, yeah, I feel like a lot of the time I'm having a conversation and it gets interrupted when the waiter comes by to ask if we need something. And they have to be loud enough so the table knows they're there incase there is someone among us who needs something. Lol, I think it's perfectly acceptable to call to waiters in the US, I don't think it's taboo. Just try to make sure that it's the one you're sure is the one assigned to your table.

DEJA VU! Sorry y'all - this is basically a re-upload. Our last video was going viral (half a million views in four days) and we realized part of it was problematic. The part we took out was that in Japan, you often see grown men hanging out at children's playgrounds, like playing on their phone or drinking a beer on the benches near the slides or jungle gym. I babysit our nieces and nephews often in Japan, so this surprised me at first (because you rarely see adults at a children's park in Texas, unless they are there with their children). Anyway, my husband took down the video, waited a couple weeks, and then re-uploaded a slightly edited version of it (this). Sorry for the confusion, we hope you understand!

Texan in Tokyo So I'm from the U.S. and everything excluding the first one varies. Because many people are raised differently in the U.S. So when I heard asking for the waiter is rude, where I'm from is not the case because a lot of the times unless you're at a fancy restaurant or your waiter is just awesome you'll need to get someones attention. Slurping noodles isn't exactly weird but overdoing the slurping sound could get weird. But I have been around a lot of people who eat like that so yeah. Drinking with co workers, that's not exactly weird either in the U.S. depending on how close you are with your co workers and as long as it's not at the work place depending on the job. That last one with nose sniffling I don't know who that one was pointed towards as being rude but I find sniffling personally annoying in the U.S. even though people do it anyways.

Racial bastardization between blacks, amerindians and whites occurred on a massive scale in Latin America and those nations south of the US mostly suck, as opposed to the Anglosphere whose racial stock and immigration laws favored Northern European immigrants and mongrelization was looked down.

Translation in short ;) Basically it is allowed to drink alcohol everywhere in Germany, but there are exceptions. Towns and Communities have "domiciliary rights" they can forbid consumtion of alcohol in several places like the Townhall, parks or playgrounds. You have to obey always instructions of the police, they can prohibit the return to a particular site (single Person and groups, even when only one in the group is suspicious). Same when drunken becomes a risk for others or valuables. You have to inform yourself where and what you are allowed to.

I lived in Japan (Yokohama and Yokosuka) from 1968 to 1970. I graduated high school from a civilian school (wore the school uniform which is common for all Japanese students). I still slurp my osoba noodles. Shovel rice from a bowl into my mouth with ohashi (chopsticks) which is also rude here in the US. Also common in cities, including Tokyo, guys pissing at the street corner. On one of the commuter trains I rode from Yokohama to Yokosuka, I watched an elderly woman aim her grandson out the window to piss. Most surprising, men and women use the same public restrooms. Quite a shock for the gaijin who weren't used to that. LOL. One of my more interesting experiences was that I spoke with some of Japanese workers on base that I got to know; they were in their 40's and 50's. This means, they were soldiers in the war just 20 years earlier. Got the Japanese perspective of that time.

Samsunganer you didn't get the point / watched the video. In Japan you HAVE to really "call" for the waiter. In the US not. I added in Germany it depends on the restaurant you go to. I don't see people calling "Herr Ober, Herr Ober" or "Entschuldigung!" or "Bedienung" in Germany. In general you do make eye contact and raise your hand at max.

It's not, it differs from state to state. In fact, many states in the south don't have strict open container laws. Take Louisiana for example, they literally have drive through daiquiri shops and have a festival that is all about drinking in public (Mardi Gras). People are just ignorant and try to generalize everything.

omg as an Asian American one of the things I'm mildly annoyed (unsure if annoyed is the right word) by is that you /can't/ yell to get someone's attention! Of course I wouldn't do this at a nice restaurant, but it's very annoying when waiters disappear (and it's more often than naught) and if you tell something to someone, half the time they acknowledge you but never put it in/pass it on! Which would be fine if they, like the other half, told you that they would flag down your waiter or something of the sort, but why pretend to understand then completely wipe it from your mind?

Also I definitely agree with the sniffing > blowing your nose, mostly just because Americans just can't seem to be hygienic. Gross.

But if you see a server from a afar it is perfectly acceptable to wave at them and say "excuse me" as long as they are close enough where you do not have to yell it.

LuxWitch Basically it goes back to prohibition in the early 20th century(ended during the 1930s). When new technology became available to distill alcohol, it became cheap enough for poorer people to afford hard liquors. The problem is that the poorer people in the US would sometimes drink to excess by accident because they hadn't been exposed to hard liquors very much (save maybe whiskey, but even there whiskey was not nearly as available as beer), and intentionally drank to excess out of despair from the Great Depression. This was believed to have lead to a dramatic increase in domestic violence, limited productivity, and other issues one might expect to come from a nation experiencing a spike in alcoholism. As a (at the time) proudly Christian country, this was seen as a humiliation, and thoroughly vicious. Fundamentalist Christians were the first group to really push for the prohibition of alcohol altogether. Women's rights groups of a sort (wasn't exactly called that, more like a "women's group" at the time, and with substantial differences compared to the "women's lib" groups of the 70s) wanted to see alcohol prohibited on the basis of trying to prevent domestic assault, which was much harder to do through the legal system back then than currently. But, there were less savory elements of the prohibition movement. The KKK (Ku Klux Klan) was at its peak during this time, and provided substantial endorsement of prohibition, partly for the reasons above, and partly because it was a way to make recent immigrants from Europe more uncomfortable by denying them access to certain traditions, as well as assuming that blacks were more likely to get drunk. Eventually, national prohibition became a constitutional amendment it was pushed for so hard. Crime skyrocketed in Chicago, among other cities. Chicago still hasn't really recovered, despite prohibition being repealed today. There were a number of reasons prohibition ended up getting repealed, but on the most basic, simplified level too many people from all walks of life were sneaking in their drinks. National prohibition was repealed, but since then a sort of compromise has existed in the US. Bars are considered to be partially responsible for the behavior of their clients, and can be sued if they let anyone drive drunk with full knowledge that they were drunk. Before prohibition, bars operated like any other business and used underhanded tricks to try and get their clients to drink as much as possible. The legal age limit for drinking alcohol at a bar is 21, to try and ensure maximum maturity. Today, one can give people under 21 (but above another age, don't know offhand what that age is) alcohol, provided that they are strictly supervised. Not drinking alcohol in public is one of the many, many compromises that came out of repealing national prohibition.

Also, I want to clarify that SmakoSmell isn't wrong, per se. It is just that he leaves out a lot of steps in how it got to be that way. It was sortof an attack on blacks and the homeless in that the KKK's interests were part of the compromises, but many people at the time had other reasons for it as well. It was more that "white" society wanted "clean" and "respectable" streets. Not directly leveled against black or homeless people, but many people of the time would have seen that as a positive side effect.
