    When I started my new tank without live plants I got alge bad but right when I added plants the alge started to slow down till the point where my plants have killed the alge and has made my water quality perfect. Even with no plants you can still get alge

    @@GirlTalksFish well the best plants you could get are floating plants like frog bit and water lettuce and such duck weed is ok too but you would need to slow down the water flow of your aquarium. LED lights are the main cause for alge so of you have alot of floating plants they will absorb that light and will provide a shady spot for fish and it will kill off the alge. Fast growing plants needs more firts and they need a really good substate . I use organic soil and cap it off with sand and my plants grow like crazy it takes time but once you get the right stuff and do some research on the plant and it's water conditions no plant will die on u

    Algae isn’t actually a problem unless it’s actively keeping your plants from getting light. It’s really just an aesthetic thing, and some species of fish actually benefit from it.

  • @Vulpes10

    @Vulpes10

    @Moe I I wrote healthy plants. To get to what you are talking about there is already a problem with plant growth and probably other factors in the aquarium that then lead to algae becoming a problem. Healthy plant growth is one of the main factors to help limit algae in the first place. This info can also be easily obtained.

    Biggest things I learned... 1) buy more than 1 stem of plant, it gives it a better chance of surviving and acclimating. 2) Don't be stingy, plants need a thicker layer of substrate to be able to stretch and grow it's roots 3) You don't have to start with CO2, its expensive 4) Speaking of CO2, regulate it or else you'll lose a lot of fish and just waste money 5) Probably the most important, but certain plants needs good quality lighting. Not the cheap stuff you get from fish tank kits. Don't cheap out. 6) Tune down the amount of lighting if your tank gets too much algae. Its okay if they grow slowly at first, they're acclimating. 7) While on the topic of lighting, Don't get such a deep fish tank. After a certain depth, it becomes much harder for enough usable light to penetrate to the bottom. 8) Get rid of green hair algae before it becomes tangled up in your plants and too hard to separate. At that point, the only way to save it from spreading is to completely get rid of the plant it is invading. 9) Do WEEKLY water changes no matter how clean you think your tank is. Plants like it and will grow better. 10) Don't run charcoal if you are dosing, just wastes your money. 11) Did I forget to mention that this hobby can be money pit??

    First few months were really great! I killed the "easy" fast growing plants that people recommend, but I was the king of the Amazon sword and my ferns. I was using these root tabs from Amazon. While cleaning the tank I accidentally disturbed it. Didn't think much of it. My poor betta had to deal with such a alarming ammonia spike. He's alive because I saw the signs. Cleaned all the tabs from the tank and boom my swords and ferns aren't making a comeback with these other rootabs. Do no disturb the plants or the root tabs!

    A lot of people (myself lol), don’t know that many plants will “melt” when you first plant them. You just cut them down and they will regenerate with growth that has adapted to the new environment. I just saw a good clip from GreenAqua and one guy cuts most of the roots off and all the leaves when he first plants his stem plants! 😳

  • @GirlTalksFish

    @GirlTalksFish

    4 жыл бұрын

    Ooo, I should try that! Some people say to keep the roots/leaves and the plants will absorb some of the nutrients to make new leaves. Other people say that cutting off the roots/leaves will encourage faster new growth. I should do an experiment on this one day...

    @@GirlTalksFish Hi A Gamer's Wife, it's not just emersed grown plants that need time to adapt, even submersed grown plants need time to adjust to your tank conditions, especially after the stress of shipping. In addition, it appears your fast growing plants are dying because they need more CO2. Faster growth rates = higher CO2 demand, and if that demand isn't met, the plant either adapts to grow slower, or dies. It doesn't look like you're injecting CO2, or enough of it. If you're serious about keeping planted tanks, I'd suggest www.advancedplantedtank.com by Dennis Wong aka Xiaozhuang who also has a channel here on youtube. In my opinion his commentary and advice is the most objective, even compared to popular aquarists like Tom Barr.

    I think a couple great things that I learned about for planted tanks were dimmers and PAR meters. Dimmers really helped my first tank avoid any algae growth because I dimmed it while the plants got established and brightened to help them grow later. Renting a PAR meter helped even faster because I could be proactive with dimming instead of reactive like I was before.

I killed a $30 Crinum Calamistratum because I accidentally uprooted it several times while cleaning. I really liked it, so I bought it again and made sure to root it better and move the leaves out of the way while cleaning. It's doing great and almost spans the 10 gallon tank it's in! 👍

    I'm very experienced, but hadn't setup a new tank in 12 years. So, I messed up and did the early fertilization error, which was meant to cure a fish' intestinal problem (because the tabs included magnesium, which helped the fish). Anyway, I came back from a 3 week vacation, with massive massive algae problems, everything was covered, and even before then it wasn't looking perfectly clean. Lot's of brown and even blue algae. It's recovering well now. Feels kinda good to now hear that this is perfectly normal and happened because of the fertilization nothing else I could've done wrong. Also the tip about slow growing plants dying slower, I've noticed that, but didn't know it was such a general rule of thumb. And I've watched many videos about plants before, but they never told me anything new. So thank you very much. Haven't really thanked someone for a video in a long time.

    Well I don't know anything about checking water parameters but what I find is that my bettas do well with live plants. Anubias seems to work the best I found that if I cut the roots that grow well and I'm really hoping the lily pads workout. I had a beautiful crowntail betta that was navy blue with orange fins and he lived in a half gallon tank with a lily pad and the brakes for long so he would rest along the roots or sleep in the lily pad. Sadly he died from tank shocks when I upgraded him to a three gallon. When I was first starting out in the hobby and the Taiwanese worker told me on bettas only need a half gallon and they don't need a cycled tank he did fantastically in his little half gallon. when I studied about what they do in America cuz I'm American and they said all your Betta needs at least two 2.5 gallons with a filter and heater blah blah blah. so I went out and I got 3 gallon tank a soldier with low-flow I put in Driftwood was Anubis and I put in gravel. I set up the nitrogen cycle for at least a month. I did it properly. well the tank with cycling I kept him in his old tank with his lily pad and he continued to thrive I did the water change every other day. finally he was ready to move into his new home and I acclimated him properly put him in there and when within a week he lost color and died. I never thought tank shock was possible but you'd be surprised if not all betas are happy with a 3 gallon tank or bigger. From that one experience I feel always slightly worried you know. I have pictures of every beta that I've ever had and sadly they all passed away from some illness or something that you know just cropped up. After 2 years I finally have a healthy bettas. Try not to mess with the tanks too much. I think betas are kind of sensitive and each betta has their own personality and their likes and dislikes. like for example my crowntail Patriot he's red white and blue he loves his 3 gallon tank he swims all the time in it. but I have a tiny small Betta I don't know what kind he is and he only uses about half of his 3 gallon tank so I'm actually thinking of putting him into a 2-gallon tank because that's what he swims usually and his 3 gallon tank he stops at a certain point and just he doesn't swim around the whole time in other words

    I just shifted to planted tank for some time now and it's true that my nitrate level doesn't much of a worry since live plants balances the water parameter inside the tank, yet I still have melted plants since I just got them for more than a month now but luckily those dead leaves are moved to my Ramshorn tank where they nibble them when they get bored. Comparing to my Goldfish tank with just a substrate I always need to be alert on the parameters since it's just the bacterias that balances the water and there's no plants to help them.
