5 Things I WISH I KNEW before Applying to College
Hey guys!! In this video, I breakdown the 5 things I wish I knew before applying to college. These are application tips for high school seniors filling in their common app right now as well as long term advice for high school freshman, sophomores, and seniors thinking about their college applications right now.
The 5 Tips we talk about are:
1. College Fit: This is a concern I see with a lot of high school students who have a dream college and will do anything to carve their application to 'fit' a school. Whether it's Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, or MIT, at the end of the day these colleges simply want high potential students, regardless of what intrinsic quality the school claims to 'solely possess'.
2. Build Bridges: In High School, it is so so important to recognise the individuals who will affect your college application apart from you. From your high school teachers, to college professors you work with on research papers, to even your school counsellors, start building relationships with each of these pillars of your profile.
3. The 2X Rule: This is a time management and productivity tip that has SAVED my life when I was in high school and applying to college. If you think a task will take x amount of time, just double it. Trust me, you'll thank me later.
4. 0 Wasted Experiences: In high school and in life in general to be honest, no experience is ever wasted. Trust me on this, everything you've been through will play some role in your eventual application, regardless of how useful you perceive it to be.
5. Applying Undecided: This is a personal opinion, however, I think it's dangerous to apply to the United States undecided. This is because when a college is evaluating your application, they want to see some direction with your academic interests. This helps them place you in their class and understand the kind of student you will be. Indicating no specific major does make this relatively harder for them to accomplish - and the last thing you want to do is make an admission's officer job harder.
That's it!! Now for some timestamps.
Timestamps:
Introduction - 00:00
College 'Fit' - 00:56
Build Bridges - 04:46
The 2X Rule - 07:07
0 Experiences Wasted - 08:41
Applying Undecided - 10:40
Conclusion - 12:30

Always love your video soooooo much!! By the way, this has nothing to do with your video, but do you happen to know which study to major in if I want to study artificial photosynthesis at Stanford Undergrad? I was wondering what the difference is between "Energy Resource Engineering" and "Atmosphere/Energy" Be really happy if you could answer!!
love the content though
Heya! So I'm in grade 10. I have almost nothing for ECs except for having a writing page on insta, and honestly it gives me shit ton of anxiety. I do have quite a few domains where I want to make some things work but this pandemic is being helpful enough in not letting me do so. Could ya maybe make a video about how to build ECs, what are the different options for the same (like Olympiads, non profit, internships, summer school programmes, etc), and how exactly to get started? It'd be a HUGE help cuz the academics are easier to tackle but the ECs aren't.
Please make next video on how to cold mail a professor for research internship and boost your other extracurriculars!!! Please
Man shaurya on fire 🔛🔥

Hey! Loved ur video and the insights! So i had a question. Through my essays and ECAs, i will be showing the admission officers that i am passionate about mental health advocacy and motivational speaking... So most collges have that 1 qs that asks how u will contribute to that college/ what u wanna do when u get in/ how will u add some sort of value to their community? So my general answer, in the simplest terms, would be that i wanna start a motivational speaking club(cause most unis dont have them) and talk abt why unis need such a club/organization. And i will put my own perspective into the answer, to make sure that they know that this is something actually coming from my heart. So my qs is.. does this sound too ambitious? Like i dont want them thinking that im talking big just to impress them... Waiting for ur reply😊
Hey Shaurya, I love your content. I'm a high-school student from Gurgaon as well, can you please tell me about the internships you did as a student ?Thanks!

Could you please make a video about how you got an internship at MIT?
Hey Shaurya, it's off-topic, but felt like asking for your opinion. I sat for the SAT on December 5. I had close to zero preparation. My mom died on 4th November, just a month before the test due to COVID. She was in the hospital and was put on life support. I was detached from studies for a couple of months. I previously planned to invest this time to prepare for SAT. I am not really satisfied with what I did on the test and might not score 1500+. What I am asking is, if my score is not good enough, should I go test-optional as we have that chance this year, or should I report my scores anyway and explain my situation in the special circumstances section?

hi shaurya is relatively easy to get into canadian universities than usa
I'm considering taking a gap year this year and applying to university next year instead of now. This is because due to covid I couldn't do many of the things I wanted to do for my extra curriculars and I don't think I'll get into a good university if I apply this year. I'm from Pakistan and I'm very scared of how I'll deal with all my friends being away at University if I gap and stay here. Do you think gapping is a good idea and could be worth it?
Hey Shaurya, I was thinking about applying to the summer entrepreneurship programme by launch x for 2021 but it's application deadline is in February but tbh I need some time to prove to my parents about the fact that I am serious about it(I hv the tendency to slack off but I am really serious about it although 🙄)......So I don't think I will be able to apply to the summer programme bcuz it's too early for me TO PROVE TO THEM......Are there any other courses by launch x in the later part of the year which I can probably attend or any other summer entrepreneurship programmes which I can apply to and has a later deadline....... Your answer will be of grt hlp😁 P.s I already commented this in the entrepreneurship series video (part 1 to be specific).....but I just commented it here again just so that it may be noticed by u......(yea I am desperate!)
Brother actually my passion is to become at aerospace engineer studying at MIT (USA). I'm actually working on a national level project competition related to space technology, after the competition can I work more on these kinda projects or can I concentrate on exam(Olympiads, KVPY, JEE, SAT etc.....)

@@ShauryaSinha bruh... USC really facepalming now huh😂😂
The main mistake I made when applying to U.S. colleges is that I didn't prepare a lot of time in advance. I was supposed to attend a French university, but at the last minute things got really hectic (I skip the details) and I had to find another way. I thus decided to apply to a US university right after graduation without knowing anything about the application process. I was discovering the required exams at that time, and they were a little tough for me because my entire high school curriculum was in French. I also did not have a lot of opportunities for extracurriculars in my school (except playing an instrument) and exploring interests through extracurriculars is really not in my country's culture. However, I still managed to get to a good US university (but not my top choice). Now after trying a lot more extracurriculars in various fields, I found out exactly what major I want to pursue and what school I want to attend (Stanford, hence I'm here😁). Looking forward to transferring to Stanford. Wish me luck :)
