Hello everyone, I was born in Malaysia and live in Europe now. However I still love my home country and I wish the government would take more notice about the cleanliness of some places, and encourage citizens of Malaysia to help to clean their own environments. They should take a leaf out of Singapore's book on managing the environment. There you go sir. Thanks for the statement❤❤.

Thanks for the comment, every country has areas where it can improve surely - these were just my initial observations/reactions

1) We enjoy summer all year long. No need winter clothing. You can stay at outdoor cafes until late night (you cannot do this at most part of US) 2) Traffic in KL is higher, other areas ok. 3) Rats, not many areas. These are urban educated rats. They don't disturb people 4) Malls are for relaxing, we buy online 5) After two years, you will adapt, maybe you will even like it.

We locals don't like some places in KL. Outskirts of KL are better, what they see is just the tip of the iceberg of Malaysia.

You are right. Rats in KL are huge, when I first came here its scary. 😅. Also I think malls are for locals because locals love going to the malls. Not many tourists go to the malls I noticed, so developers built a lot of malls because there is a lot of demand from local people.

KL has a more relaxed and balanced life style. Singapore has faster pace, it hurts the locals especially those in the lower income category. And its not fair to compare KL and singapore since singapore is a very tiny tinnie more island so its a lot easier to take care, control and monitor. If Singapore is the size of Sumatra island, they would face the same problem. Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila and Ho Chi Minh city easily has 10-20 million of population where else KL has around 2 million, most people working in KL live in neighbouring districts. Lets not forget they could easily be a million of foreign workers in KL working in the 3D sectors not favoured by locals (dirty job, difficult and dangerous jobs)

As a Malaysian, I wish the country could be cleaner, everybody does our part and even foreigners. I like to go around picking up rubbish.

1. Weather - nothing can be done. Live with it, breathe, enjoy & adjust. The nice thing about it is that you can do a lot of outdoor activities esp sports, golfing, hiking/bush walk, camping all year round 2. Traffics - Born and raise in KL. Plan your journey (avoid peak hours). Rain will make it worst. Public transport LRT/MRT wud be the best. I wud rather spend time in the gym or hang-out with a few friends over coffee or extend my stay in the office for a few hours during peak hours before going home. By 7/8/9 pm, the traffic wud ease substantially. 3. Rats & roaches - certain areas especially open air food courts. Civic awareness of city dwellers. One thing that i've noticed (been a traveller myself), you don't see much of these in open space/outside due to the weather (cold weather i.e winter). In areas like South East Asia, you will see it 24/7 all year round. I spent a bit of my high school in Pittsburgs & college/uni in Indiana & all over US travelling during summer breaks. These problems are everywhere in the world. 4. Malls - i take it as an advantage. These is the place where I cool down after walking under the hot sun or escaped from the crazy rain. I guess, this must be the reason why we have malls (big or small) under many office towers i.e to escape the heat, rain & traffics. Some office towers have gym facilities as well. 5. Durians - hate to love it. Love the smells & the taste. Hate the after taste tho especially when you burp. To me, it is still much better than those smelly aged cheese like Bossa. Hehehe

Here's a tip mate, maybe learn to take some criticism. These issues are things that can be fixed if Malaysians actually wanted to anything about it, but instead you're happy living in squalor

In my opinion the cleanliness in kuala lumpur is out of control now due to too many foreingener workers esp from bangladesh. The authorities have to do something drastic about this issue. as a malaysian from northern reign state, I honestly felt like a foreingener in my own country when in was in kl.

To a certain extent, what you said it's true enough. The prolonged existence of the illegal immigrants in Malaysia, if it's left unchecked, could lead to more unnecessary problems to our country, creating unsolved imbalances for our federal and also states government. 😄

I am from Canada and I've been to Malaysia 4 years ago and again now for leisure purposes. KL is a very densely populated and tourist filled city. I've seen foreigners from all over the world. China, India, Australia, you name it. Yes the smell of Durian is awful and the food markets where they don't wash their hands before preparing food are my pet peeves. The traffic and the pollution, never ending construction in KL are out of control. With kids I had felt suffocating in KL but when you get out the city life its actually very nice. However, these are thunts thar can he overlooked because i still like it more than Canada. Specifically Toronto where i come from. Its mich dirtier there and more chaotic. I visit Malaysia because its still better than many Western countries like France, Uk or New York. Speaking from a Muslim perspective. There is system here and its mucu better than mant cities I've visited.

Absolutely spot on. There are many areas in the city that require improvements especially relating to cleaniness n practicality. Also the dirty state of the city is not entirely down to foreign workers as other comments would suggest. It is also the locals - they generally have little regard as to where they discard their rubbish or even cigarette buds - it is simply wherever that is convenient to them in the end. Couple that with poor maintenance what you see is what you get...n it's pretty bad...

I'd say it's not just KL but Malaysia as a whole. Plastic and waste is a massive issue and you don't need to go far to see massive piles of trash. In my opinion a lot of it comes down to laziness and general not caring about the environment

Malaysians prefer indoor activities.....because of the humidity. That is why it is so many malls :)....

We visited in late July/Early August. It's hard to say what it will be like that time of year, I would search the weather for that time of year!

Walkability and cleanliness needs improvement as someone born and bred in KL. Perhaps greenify the city a lot more could cool down kl and make soften up the concrete effect in KL perhaps?

Agreed - I hate to compare KL to Singapore, we traveled straight from Singapore to KL and noticed Singapore felt more walkable with greener public spaces. But I still loved KL for other reasons!

may be people dont know many european countries are so dirty too, mostly in france!!!! I mostly use buses to travel from south to paris and bus station in lyon is really dirty and bus station in paris, completely like in the landfills, and they come to malaysia and complaint. Marseille city is the most dirtiest city in france

This month alone, 2 mega malls will be opened to public. Last week, the Damansara Heights Pavilion has been opened and later this month, another mega mall in TRX area will be opened to the public. And it doesn't stop there, the Merdeka 118 area (the 2nd tallest building in the world) will have another mega mall. And when you think it's more than enough, someone, somewhere, will start a feasible master plan to build a mega mall in KL or in a location around the Klang Valley.

A Malaysian here, agree with you.. dont have to sugarcoat it. No 2 is the one I hate the most (driving & traffic).. No 1 honestly we cannot do anything about.. No 3 can be improved, I agree with you with no 4.. too many malls.. No 5 is kinda neutral for me coz I dont really smell durian unless I walk in the area where they sell durian

We liked our malls. Keep us cool. But if you do not like bukit bintang why not go to our jungles like: Kanching waterfalls Templer's park FRIM - forest research institute of malaysia Nature is there. But you will complaint about the tropical heat right? So which one, the malls or in the jungle? Garbage ? Believe me or not, kl is a magnet for foreign workers from bangladesh, pakistan, myanmar, Nepal, india (not sure how many are legal workers) From my knowledge, Bangladeshis are the top culprits at old apartments. When there is a long public holiday example Eid end of ramadhan, they will gather in downtown kl and trash their food and drink packages. When locals return to work after the holidays, it will look exactly like old dhaka. I swear to god, to tell the truth.

I do think the malls are great to keep people cool, but I guess from a tourist perspective having so many malls makes exploring a city a little less exciting at times. Thanks for the nature recommendations, I love nature and hiking so I will check them out next time! And to be honest, I don't TRULY hate tropical heat, but when walking around a city it can be draining and it's not fun being super sweaty in street clothes. I really appreciate your comment and opinions - it is interesting to hear the perspective of a local Malaysian. Thanks!

Too expensive city. Littering are getting bad to worst.

As a Malaysian who is from Ipoh, I would call KL is not taken care of. Even the locals in KL act like slum dwellers. They have no respect for cleanliness and traffic rules. On tip of that too many migrant workers from other parts of Asia made things worse.

Its really noisy and lot of headaches from modified loud exhaust. Im get really curious about the people level of education 😮‍💨 I don't recommend to live there

You will find flaws in all major cities but as far as I'm concerned regarding KL, the pros certainly outweighs the cons. Durian is like Marmite in the UK - either you love it or hate it.

Every coin has something we can like or hate about.. but I really was looking for something more practical issues kind of info...not like it's humid or about durian. More like watch out for traffic around this time, or transportation issue if there's any.

I live in another city in the country and we call it K-hell. It's such a shit hole and I dread every time I have to go over there

If you're looking for a perfect city, you certainly wont find it in KL. Not sure abt other cities around the world. Your content is useful to slow down the tourists influx into KL. Hence, the city can take a breather and reach an optimal sustainable equilibrium again.

Compared to other busy places I've been to, I didn't find KL to be ultra crowded. I also didn't notice too many mosquitoes during my visit

Just a matter of opinion...putting the Protocol,egos and Pride aside...as a true genuine Traveller..bound to go through the good,the bad and even sometime the ugly to any part of world oneself travel while spending/exploring the one way forward life journey..!!!! I love KL, visit it all the time. I like it more than Dubai. But what I hate abt Msia is the slow mentality of working! Iam Dutch and here in the Netherlands everyone work very hard! Malaysians are more laidback. The Malls are amazing but for me not for shopping nothing can Beat Amsterdam, Paris, Antwerp. Not even Dubai. The other thing which I hate, is that Native Malaysians (not Chinese, Thai, Indians) are not that kind and friendly to me. My appearance looks very Middle Eastern (Iam not Arab). But Malaysians think Iam Arab. They are not friendly. I can understand because Arabs can be very Rude, so I never blame them. I wish the areas were more cleaner but that’s why I visit only Malls during my stay in KL. But no 1 which I hate the most is the COFFEE 😂 Coffee is worse it taste like chai for me. Msia is not a coffee culture and they need to be trained in it. Best coffee is Starbucks over there and I don’t even like Starbucks 😂 The last thing which I hate is the (police) corruption. Once hotel cleaners stole clothes from us in the hotel, and it was on cctv. 5 star hotel. So the management staff came with the thief’s and they said beat them, iam against violence but I was shock to hear this😅 Here in the Netherlands it’s a crime to hit and beat thieves. They will sue you 😅

I think that you don’t understand anything about South East Asian countries. The hot weather, shopping malls and eating Durians are what many foreigners like about South East Asian countries. You will find the same things in cities like Singapore and Bangkok.

As a Malaysian I agree with all 5 points especially the traffic and the cleanliness aspect. Malaysia is one of the worst country in environmental performing index. The government here didn't care much on cleanliness/environmental aspect. Majority of the citizens here always litter the public places.

I've not been to Hyderabad, but just passed the city from the highway. I worked and lived in Mumbai for 3 years, the city centre is quite clean in certain areas, but in the other suburban areas, you just have to see it yourself and make your own opinions. The same things about the other big cities like New Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai. Kolkata is the only 1 of the 5 biggest cities in India that I've not visited. In terms of traffic flow and traffic noise in India, they like honking. I found that the smaller cities in India are more pleasant like in Goa. Chandigarh in Punjab is one of the cleanest city in India. But by far, KL is much, much more, more and more, a better city in many ways you can think of. 😄

@@WanderlustWellman I just couldn't help it but to let you know my true experience in Mumbai. The air, water and noise pollutions were unbearable. I've seen people do their toilet biz open at the reclamation land by the sea . My office in Bandra East wasn't far away from the biggest slum area in the city. Bandra West, where I lived may be a good place, but honking is everywhere. I was shocked to see that homeless people sleep under the flyover, in the middle of the road dividers, make a tent as a shelter, not only in Mumbai but also in Delhi. I've seen people putting their clothes to dry by hanging those wet clothes on the fence of a road divider. The beggars seemed to flock in certain areas in many parts of big cities. These problems are real, and the locals detest reading something like this. India is the second most populated country in the world, and there are too many common problems left unchecked by the government. That's the reality of life for some people in this world. How can they change to make a better life, it's entirely up to them and their leaders. The good, bad and ugly, exist everywhere in this world, and given a choice, we all, no matter where we are, want to live in a better world. 😄

All cities in the world have their own attractions, vibes, charm and beauty, and it all depends on how each person explore those places. I was in Mumbai for 3 years, it's definitely a bigger and richer city than KL, but I can safely say, it's a thousand times better than any big city in India. 😀

I actually have never been to Washington D.C., but I'm not surprised to hear that!

I am living only 14km from KL and it has been years since I last stepped foot within the golden triangle. The KL I used to know has lost its soul and authenticity. In some parts, it feels even obnoxious to see a row of shoplots offering massage service with girls calling customers like they are offering something else (at that moment, I tought I was in the neighbouring contry). It is also an eye sore to see some foreign tourists wearing super thin clothes their nipples show. And of course there are many more (as written by others in the comment section). Hence, having said that, I truly understand the things you mentioned because in reverse, as a local, there are also many things I am not comfortable with in many aspects be it from tourists, foreign workers, illegal immigrants. However, I am also aware we need to expand the economy and there's always a price for that.

I agree with you Wellman, some parts of the city is very dirty. Being local I feel a bit embarrassing about the cleanliness of the city. I have lodged the complaints to the City Hall of Kuala Lumpur to take fast actions to solve the matter.

The honking definitely isn't as bad as some parts of the world, but Southeast Asia definitely has crazier traffic as a whole!

Well, then you can come and visit Penang, Asia best retirement place and world ranking No. 3. Lots of natures, seaside, delicious food etc. Btw, have you been here?

Is penang a lot better? What would you say makes life in penang better than KL? I am not liking KL at all and am considering coming to Penang.

@@Chris-dw6cu Kl is a big city, Penang is an island for relaxing. And many happening in Penang. We have parks, hiking trails, take tram up to Penang hill enjoy the beautiful view and tadty hawker foods. 😊

Every city and country definitely has room for improvement, we still loved KL and Malaysia and hope to return to see and do more! 😀🇲🇾

I don't agree - maybe I think cities such as Singapore, Tokyo, and Seoul are a little cleaner and less chaotic, but I still loved Kuala Lumpur. I just have a few critiques, and some of them honestly make the city unique and charming

too mush illegal immigrants bringing along their bad dirty behaviour tarnish Kuala Lumpur

if you think KL is hot should go to Dubai.. in mid summer.. it will fry you in seconds..

Haha pretty true - but it's also worth noting that I've only spent 5 days of my life in Malaysia vs 27 years in America so I have a lot more knowledge and experience regarding my home country

You came to poor non developed country like Malaysia and reacts persistently insult about impropered hygiene system that doesn't suit your taste. It's far more convenient for you to stayed comfort in your cleanest and most developed country without any hesitation.

To be fair, I don't claim that my "developed" country is any cleaner or hygienic - I think Kuala Lumpur is still much cleaner and safer than most cities in the USA nowadays. Just little small critiques/reactions I had upon my first visit, not trying to insult!

As you can see for example China now are being bullied only because of their extraordinary brilliant workmanship in every way. Yeah I'm irritating person and fortunately not to the ex colonists. KZreadrs knows how to gain a lot of money by putting up only good stories and chilling.

@@ewansariasmara8215 do you know a neighboring country called Singapore? The difference in hygiene, education and economy is miles apart from Malaysia and rest of South east Asia. It's about attitude.

Basically you just like developed cities like Tokyo, Seoul , Singapore 😂 I’m in NYC now and I like chaotic city like NYC, Paris, KL, Bangkok
