The painting of the roofs... ugh. My favorite villager was Kitty, I was OBSESSED with her. Her entire acre was filled with flowers and had a sign with a heart. One day she painted my roof a hideous color, I don't even remember what it was, but I snapped. I dug up all the flowers and replaced them with pitfalls, crossed out the heart on the sign, and hit her with a net whenever I saw her. How could she do this to me, she was my favorite? A week or two later she wound up moving away, and I had regretted everything. I ugly-cried into my pillow for an hour. (Did I mention I was a kid? LOL)

Ridley369 / I kinda agree. There are still some diversity in the personalities in characters, but you can’t really have any real enemies or rude villagers. There was an alligator near my house on the game cube that was SUPER rude, and I hated him so much, but he was in my town for so long and when he finally moved away, I was really sad. I like having enemies.

Slightly off topic but I hate that you only get balloon furniture (besides better slingshots) in the new leaf balloons. It’s ruined them.

Yep! I remember selling a LOT of fruits to get bells for the mortgage and then i talked to my neighbor Pierce and he forced me to play a guessing game with him, i lost and he stole all my bells, i hated him ever since, lol.

Logan Nicholas Yeah, i forgot when but when it snows an igloo appears somewhere and one of your villagers stays inside, he/she has a pot with some stew/chowder or something like that and only wants to play games in exchange for furniture or fossils from you, and if you have his/her belonging from an errand you can't give it to him/her. I haven't played the game in a while so i don't remember so well the details, but yeah, that definitely happens!

Turning the game off isn't always favorable when you've been playing for several hours. There's no autosave in the older games so that can mean giving up all that progress you made for the day. Better to just live with it and beat the villagers with a net

Only this game and New Horizons have the voice specifically tuned for English, the other games just use the Japanese one ...with the exception of Wild World, which due to hardware limitations just outputs random "blah blah"s in non-Japanese(/Korean?) versions

The roof painting is annoying as all hell but you have to admit it's kinda hilarious.

Chasind I like City Folk the best for a few reasons, and the happy medium when it comes to the dialogue is one of them; Blathers will get partway through a rambling session, then be like “Agh, I’m sorry! 😧” upon realizing he was blathering 😆 Cute and true to his name without being really slow and annoying.

I'm so glad the rambling is confirmed to be back in New Horizons! When donating, you can donate normally or just say "I'm in a hurry!" to skip the rambling. Much better than it being completely absent in New Leaf!

I managed to get my hands on this game last year and agree with everything you listed. When a villager told me they repainted my roof, I didn't believe them until I went to save and saw the roof of my house all black. I think out of everything, the forced purchase is what really gets me annoyed. I was blown away when I had over 20 grand in bells taken from me for some terrible item. Now I make it a habit to stash my bells every chance I get before I start talking to the villagers because that lesson hurt.

When I played this game as a kid, Gabi lived in the acre right next to me and I made it a point to talk/visit with her everyday she was my in game "best friend" (even though I always talked to her so much she'd get super mad at me lol). Well one day I had a painting in my inventory I needed to donate but I made the mistake of talking to her and she forced me to give her my painting (I tried backing out of that for SO LONG while she just sat there laughing at me); I can't really remember why but resetting wasn't a really good option for me, I think I won the painting in the igloo games or I had gotten extremely lucky in them or something idk. So I had to suck it up and give her my painting Needless to say I still haven't forgiven her for it; it's probably the harshest betrayal I have ever felt all over a stupid painting! Lmao.

This happened to me too and of course, I felt betrayed. But then I realized I can order another one from Tom Nook since it is now in my catalog and I felt less betrayed, lol.

2:46 - And that was the reason peppy villagers were my most hated villagers (In the GC version), but at least this doesn't happen with other villager types in the GC version since the other personality types give you an option to deny their offer.

4 years late, but I also really hated their stupid "Help me get through the maze in my Nintendo Power. Now!" conversation. They make you waste a bunch of time guessing how to get through a maze you can't even see, and you don't even get a reward for all your trouble.

The storage thing drove me insane as well!

When I was little, I just wanted to have a pink roof. Gonzo had other plans, however, and kept painting it black. I still love Gonzo, however.

My highest level of hatred goes to how cruel the villagers and game can be. They can either be the largest gremlins of all, or the nicest chaps. Some make fun of your cloths and music while others give you free items. Not to mention the letters.. the HRA are monsters in the Gamecube version. Though I have the perfect example of the 50/50 villager effect. I sent 2 letters to my favorite villagers to get them to like the village more, and they had different reactions to an otherwise super positive letter. One said “Hey, thanks for the letter pal! Lets play games sometime!” while the other said *”How DARE yOu send me tHiS ABOMINATION! YOu SAVaGe MonStEr! NeVer seNd mE a LettEr agaIn yoU FreaKish SasQuaTch NeanDerthaL!!”*

I also hate it when they change the roofs. I thought it was a glitch at first.

i don't even have the game and i absolutely agree, i finally know why everyone's rooms are always so cluttered with stuff, the storage upgrade in the newer games is truly a blessing, i will already start getting NOT attached to my roof color so i will not want to throw an animal into a river

I dislike the fact that in this version of Animal Crossing, villagers *always* move out without your approval, whether you're travelling to another town by train or not 😓 that way, I've lost so many favourite villagers throughout the years

Marcy: "Don't look so depressed! I'm sure you'll be really stoked to have that carpet once you see it on your floor." Me, someone who spends countless hours on animal crossing: Let's not talk about how good the rug is, and talk about how YOU JUST STOLE MY CARPET THAT COSTED ME 150 BELLS FOR A RUN DOWN CARPET THAT ONLY COSTED 50

Slider music, new objects such as medicine, new areas such as the reset center, town decorations, a photo system where you can save photos via an SD card adapter, minigames you can play with your GBA at the wishing well, listening to the villager's conversations, new tasks such as delivering wrapped presents and letters to certain people, and so on.

My two biggest gripes: villagers leaving without warning when you visit a new town and the fact that you can't participate in the sport's festival outside of the aerobics. They should have done this with the animal moving: When you get on the train to visit another town, another animal from your town joins you. They tell you that they've been thinking about moving to the town you're going to and you have a chance to convince them to stay.

I didn’t know what a fossil even was until I played city folk. I placed one of them in my house by accident and I was like.....“THAT PURPLE CIRCLE THINGY HAS BEEN A DINOSAUR BONE THIS WHOLE TIME?!???!?”

I remember back in the day when my friends and I used to visit eachother's towns by swapping memory cards. A particular event happened, probably in 1st grade, between my two friends that I would play AC with. One of my friends visited the other's town and Bob moved into it shortly after. He was so pissed. I remember the Bob wars to this day.

What I hate about the old AC games is that the villagers were so cruel to you.

And that's why I'm trying to avoid talking to villagers much on GC version of Animal Crossing so I can prevent force trade. I did try out that game for like 5 days ago on the emulator. Thank you for making this video, Jeff.

If flipping _Animal Crossing_ is discouraging you from making friends, there’s a severe problem with the game!

My gosh, I never even played Animal Crossing on the Game Cube, but all of these sound incredibly frustrating! What was Nintendo thinking at the time?? That it'd be fun to randomly be forced to give up something you may possibly like? That the player would love the color of their new roof no matter what it is, even if they really liked the color before, and hate it now? That the TEDIOUS process of mailing fossils was going to be a great time??? My gosh, I feel a bit frustrated even thinking about it, and I never even played!

The game is really fun still. The villagers have more personality Has some of the most iconic music in the franchise A lot of great features that still haven’t come back etc.

Yeah, I'd never go back to this game after playing NL or new horizons. City folk maybe because it hardly adds anything new and has the same storage issues. The music is amazing though, I much prefer it to the NH music.

It's not that bad, really. If you're looking for a relaxing slow-paced game with a bunch of boring chores to rewind after work, it's kind of perfect. I don't mind mailing fossils or talking to Blathers. He's so cute, and it's exciting to open your mail and see what fossils you got. It also reminds me to write letters to the villagers while I'm at the post office.

Great to see a more-objective look at this game! I love it too, but it does have its flaws. I agree with all of yours (although roof painting I'd put higher), but I will admit I don't find fossil mailing that inconvenient. It does make stationery more useful too...but is it unnecessary? Yes. Another thing I dislike about this game is the early villager bedtimes. Normals go to sleep at 9, while lazies go at 10. You have a favor to do at 9:30 p.m. and Mitzi's house is your next stop? Too bad! Wait until tomorrow, if you remember!

Good point about villager bedtimes, I forgot about that! Although you can get around it if they happen to fall asleep outdoors, which they often do. I wish villager bedtimes were always like in City Folk--no one is ever asleep before 1 a.m.. Perfect for night owls like me!

Dolphin emulator works great, it emulates for both gamecube and wii. I totally recommend doing it

I'm pretty sure one of the main reasons for having fossils need to be mailed out was to create a practical use for letters in the GameCube game.

This made me realize how much I mix Wild World and original together. Played them both a lot but been so long since I really played. I remember WW conveniences so well haha

Yeah but best part was when I played this game I was like 5 without a care in the world meanwhile my brother was 13 and he raged about all this stuff whereas I just had trouble storing shirts since I bought every single one

Meanwhile in NH I literally store everything. Have to get all the different rare and interesting items.

It's a really nice touch that Blathers is uncertified in this game. It only made the rest of the games more relevant to the fact.

i’ll never forget when i had just painted my roof blue and the next day i log on for Wolfgang to tell me he painted my roof black.

I feel better now because I’m not the only one who plays old ac games

Also, I know the force trades were changed to villagers just offering to buy or trade for an item in your pockets they wanted and you can say yes or no, but...the villagers being able to see into your pockets was always weird to me...

I actually kind of enjoyed sending out fossils. It was exciting waiting a day. Wondering if it could be the last fossil you need to complete your collection...

The Forced Trades Situation is EXACTLY WHY. I would Always review my pockets before I spoke to anyone and if there was something I wasn't willing get taken, I put it on the ground before any conversations ensued. HMPH!

i actually enjoyed having to mail the fossils out. in new leaf, i shove all my fossils into my letters and hoard them out of laziness until i reluctantly have no choice but to go the museum and get them dealt with. in this game i can shove them into a letter like i normally did, then mail them off and not have to listen to a spiel. then it becomes a log-on routine to take whatever fossils are undonated, if any, to blathers. it doesnt actually save any time but somehow the routine helps me

I had teddy in my town sense I started and when I traveled to a friends town he moved there. That shit killed me inside lol

#2 is one of many reasons why I'm glad villagers are much nicer in recent games. #3 is one of many reasons I'm glad I started with City Folk.

I agree with this list! I wonder if the Faraway Museum was just a gimmick to force the player to buy stationary/use the post office...because you really don’t HAVE to send villagers letters (even though the game strongly encourages it). A complaint I would add: the wishing well’s responses to “How are things?” While it gives the exact acre for too many weeds or too many/few trees, when you get to almost satisfactory it just says “with a little more effort things could be great”, like what??? Can’t you just tell me what acre it is I need to work on! Instead of chopping/growing more trees to try and fix it and usually end up just making it worse!

I think it was definitely a gimmick to make you use the post office because I know I myself only used the post office for fossils really. Idk maybe I sent a letter once or twice to a villager, but that's about it. I think later games gave you more incentive to use the post office

True, but that's not nearly enough for me. I'm a bit of a packrat when it comes to Animal Crossing games, so I like holding onto many of the non-orderable items, when I can.

Villager paints my roof without asking Net: I am about to end this mans whole career

I never played it as a kid. I got it second hand to my retro collection and played it recently. I struggle a lot. My first AC game was Wild World to the DS.

One of my most favorite games, but oh my god! I am so glad that Animal Crossing has changed because these things are annoying! I remember having more warerobes and dressers, just for clothes! There's also Gracie with the dirty car.

I know people miss the sassy animals from the older games, but honestly I'm so glad the villagers in New Horizons don't pull any of this crap. I'd take the passive, often too nice villagers over this any day. Wouldn't mind if we got the sassy villagers WITHOUT the stuff mentioned in this video though. And I'm glad the storage is a near non-issue in New Horizons.

New horizons: Please give me that fish, I'll give you 50 bells GameCube: Is that a rare fish? *GIVE ME THAT OR ELSE YOU WILL DIE*

Man this brings back so many memories of my ex wife and I just moved into our first apartment. We had no cable only dvd's and the GameCube. Life was so much easier back then. How times have changed. Be good to each other. Stay healthy. Peace✌

Animal Crossing on Gamecube is my favorite in the series, but there are the same problems you mention in this video that I don't like. Storage is a big problem in my Animal Crossing towns. When it comes to storage New Leaf did it the best with the large storage areas in houses and the Museum 2nd floor as secondary storage. In my Gamecube town I would actually take many of the items and fill my brother's house with them. I agree with your list. Additional problems I have are things such as the permanent 13 villagers, The same 13 villagers for 17 years. I like all of my 13 permanent villagers, but I know some who hate a villager and the only way to get rid of them is to travel by train. And the 2 villagers that move out every few weeks, you can get one you like and it moves out in a few days. Adding on to the Farway Museum, I have a problem with letter storage, making it harder to mail fossils. Only being able to save using the Gyroid. There have been times I have been on the Island and I needed to stop playing and it took a few minutes to get back to the Gyroid. Not being able to shoot down balloons, they always have to land in a tree which rarely happens. The first time one landed in a tree for me was the Harvest Festival my 2nd year playing.

I always get so bored with the harvest festival :/ I got flour and some fruit and then I was too bored to keep trying to get vinegar. It takes too much work

When I played this game regularly, I actually made multiple characters, primarily so I could use multiple houses for storage, decorating, etc. And I STILL had a lot of junk littered all over my town.

These are all really good! The fossils are #1 on this list for me. It’s gotten to the point that I only dig stuff up after it rains for gyroids and any I fossils I pull up go straight to the DUMP. The only thing I would add to this list is the cost of the Post Office Model at 999,999,999 bells is absolutely ridiculous and unachievable.

Yeah, I forgot about the post office model. I'll be lucky if I ever save up 100 million bells in my lifetime, let alone a billion (minus one). That requirement is INSANE.

Completely agree on the lack of storage! You really do have to be SUPER organized because of it. Meanwhile in New Leaf, thanks to the Welcome Amiibo update, you have enough space for 720 items (locker, storage room, and letters if you do that still)!

Here’s my list of what I despise in New Horizons. If you were expecting lack of NPCs like Brewster, some of you already had that feeling but that didn’t bother me that much. Now without further ado, here they are: 7. Only craft one item at a time if you have spare materials to craft more like fish bait. To remedy this, I just get a controller with turbo and I turbo the A button. 6. Can only eat one piece of food at a time. This wouldn’t be a problem with a bunch of Turnips or snack foods like Boba, Cotton Candy, or Ice Pops. 5. Certain shells on the beach look the same and it’ll take a while to get the shell you want for your DIY even if you go Island Touring. 4. Times where fish bit the lure firmly but when you reel in, the fish just disappears. 3. Really rare timid bugs like the horned Hercules. When you creep up from a small distance, the insect just flies away. 2. Not being able to group dug up flower plants to one space in your pockets. This becomes a waste in pocket space. 1. Really long announcements when someone enters/departs the island. This happens mostly in steamed treasure islands where you find your desired item and while doing so, the announcement interrupts your progress. When someone leaves, it goes to loading, saving, then the announcement, and loading again back to the game. When someone arrives, it’s much longer. First it’s loading, then saving, then you watch a cutscene of an airport display board showing the visitor’s name, the home island, and the progress of the arrival with 5 lights. After that, you watch the visitor entering the gate, then loading again and finally back to the game. On the bright side, the game saves so you won’t lose your items in case a crash happens but this is the one thing I dislike the most.

Acnh villagers when they haven't ever seen or talked to you before: you're my best friend. Acgc villagers: gimme yo wallet, also I vandalized your house

The major things I didn't like about this game was the lack of storage and having to mail fossils to be identified. Those annoyed me so much when I'd play the game

The battery that runs the calendar smoothly on my gamecube has worn out, and now the time in animal crossing just... doesn't go when I turn the gamecube off. It makes it boring cuz no i have no motivation to play it every day if i know nothing will happen while I'm gone :/

The original Animal Crossing was so brutal it was great. Nook was a psychopath too. They've really toned it down over the years.

Ooph, yeah the forced trades! I was recently playing the game again and remembered this, so I often hide my belongings in a letter when I'm too lazy to drop them inside/outside of my house. I do the same with money. They don't seem to notice things hidden in letters. I had also made the habit of paying off my loan and only keeping 3k bells on me before thinking of talking to any of them every day lol. Also, I keep things I don't care about on me so that my villagers think they are getting something good, but I'M the one getting the good stuff from our forced trades, mwahahaha! I feel like I don't buy much in Tom Nook as I do in the other games. Only if it's something I REALLY want!

I got a new villager into my town when I was playing my game and when I left to go to my friend's village that new villager left and I felt sad ;_;

I hate it when the villagers paint your roof, too. As if that's not bad enough, they sometimes get angry if you don't like the colour! If I was them, I'd just let the roof be.

Here are a few things I hate about the GC version of Animal Crossing. I hate how Rover comes to talk to you at the train while you're traveling to another town. For me, this is time-consuming. I hate how Tom Nook gives you raffle tickets when you buy something at the store because the raffle tickets take up inventory space. I hate how villagers get angry at you when you talk to them constantly. It's actually not a big deal, but I just like talking to my favorite villagers a lot. Lastly, I hate how Tom Nook forces you to join the HRA. It bothers me how the HRA constantly complains about your house and fill your mailbox with lots of mail. Even though Tom Nook gives you the option to decline to join the HRA the next day after moving in, he'll be like "You can't tell me what to do" and makes you join the HRA anyway.

One thing I also hate is the camera in this game, or the fact that everything is placed in a kind of ‚grid system‘. Some people might like it but I hate it. I prefer the ‚globe rolling‘ effect on the newer titles. Other than that, I agree with your list :)

it always bothered me greatly that you were not able to look up to the sky, having to watch the fireworks, meteors and harvest moon reflected on the lake while everyone was looking up felt really miserable

Ah, the nostalgia. I hope you are going to do the other games, that would be pretty dope!

I like how AC GameCube made the cozy village aspect the main focus of the game. It’s different than the other AC games.

I just got the gamecube one, and I've gotta say, mailing fossils isn't that bad. I like it because you can put the fossils on the backburner so you can assess them later, and clear out inventory space until you mail them. I always keep a few letter to the museum in my inventory, and just put the fossils in whenever I find them.
