The first step when thinking about how to manage conflict between employees is to be proactive. Ask the individuals what is causing the conflict. Ask the team members around them, their direct reports. Get as many viewpoints as sensible. Understanding what is going on gives you a solid starting point to resolving the conflict.
Next, if difficult or incompetent people are the cause of the conflict, deal with these people professionally and effectively. You can’t let an individual disrupt the team with their behaviour even if it is unintentional.
Once you have discarded individual behaviour and competence as the cause of the conflict, dig under the surface. There are lots of organisational reasons that push individuals into conflict. For instance if goals are not aligned or worse are in direct conflict with each other across teams. Did under the surface to find the causes of the conflict.
The next step in managing conflict is to work on the communication. A lot of conflict comes from differences, a lack of understanding, fear or perceived threat. I share 5 tips to handle conflict between employees to break down these barriers. Communication can significantly reduce conflict when it drives understanding on both sides.
Finally, when planning how to manage conflict between employees, you need to help implement change. Those involved in conflict are likely to need help to change the situation. Change what is in your control to resolve the conflict and build support and find allies to implement change within the wider business.
Conflict does not help anyone at work. Take steps to handle conflict between employees as soon as you become aware of the conflict. There is a lot you can do!

    I'm the new employee at work. The first thing I noticed is the drama in the entire company. Good thing I'm older and wiser so I just ignore it.

    @goldschool9050 - is all the drama a cultural thing or is the organisation set up so that it creates conflicts? A lot of conflicts at work are organisationally instigated through conflicting goals, job requirements etc.

    I’m thankful that conflicts in our office are rare and usually over something minor (such as the temperature of the aircon).

    Very informative. Conflicts come in different forms ie work related or personal/ petty issues. One occasion had one worker who disliked a colleague simply because he didnt went to university despite he is a competent worker.

    This was very insightful and loved the format used to provide information - I would like it to go one step further though - and cover what happens if these steps of conflict resolution are not successful? How should the conflict be escalated or referred to the next level if the conflict resolution hasn't resolved the issues?

  • @Enhancetraining

    @Enhancetraining

    @user-qi3ve6zq6o - this is a very good question. If you can't resolve the conflict internally within the team, I would escalate to more skilled mediators within the business or to professional external or third party mediators. It is also worth mentioning that many conflicts are not resolved because the cause of the conflict is outside of the control of the two (or more) parties of the conflict such as when organisational structures or targets produce conflict. It is super important to understand the root cause of the conflict. J

    I deal with drama everyday and the only way to fix the problem is like he said follow the protocol and remove the employee from the current position and if that does not work then walk them out and problems is solved. Lots of people have set their ways and they need a realization that their behavior is unacceptable

    Great video. Although I have a question: During the due diligence part when you speak to team members working around the people in conflict how to maintain the professionalism and the status of your position and appear as a nosy manager seeking gossips?

    From experience, how you ask questions or make enquiries is important. Being subtle, asking questions as part of a general conversation, focusing on the work aspects all help. Even more important is how much your team trusts you. The more they trust, the more likely you will get the unvarnished truth.

    I’m not a manager but a team coach and I’ve heard both sides involved in an intrapersonal conflict, I’ve suggested to be a mediator in their one to one too which they both agreed. But now I’ve learned from another team member that one of them is going to bring an ultimatum (“either him or me”) to that one to one. Which tells me they’re not open or willing to resolve the conflict. What would you do?

  • @Enhancetraining

    @Enhancetraining

    3 ай бұрын

    @TimSchraepen - this is a tough question to help you with without knowing the situation and people. I would suggest doing more work to do to understand and educate both parties on the other side’s position, what actions or behaviours are causing the conflict, what different options (other than "them or me") can be considered to reduce or resolve the conflict BEFORE getting them together. If one is planning to issue an ultimatum, getting them together at this point might cause more problems. Reducing the emotions and anger before getting them together would be my priority. J

    Just had a situation with my managers and their lack of communication when i came to annoucing break. I was irritated because it holds up the whole damn team and looks stupid, so i tried to confer my colleague and was told a "its not serious" While i have managed to gain the store 15 more customers and my CS skills is revered. I just treat people with the respect i treat myself. What does a leader do in this position?
