5 STEPS to INCREDIBLE MINIMALIST photography

Here is my suggestion for 5 steps you can take to create minimalist landscape photography. Minimalism is a fascinating subgenre of photography, where you can create some incredible photos by using very few elements. I also give an introduction to what minimalism is in a historic context and how it is used in contemporary photography.

Here I'am in California and we got temps in the 70's that about 30's C. I did get lucky today, I went to a local Botanic Garden for my Morning Walk and while video recording one of their fountains a Humming Bird came along and took a dip in the fountain and I got it on video. 😁 I'm switching from motorsports to Street-Urban-Nature photography.

Excellent video and images. I love the purity and serenity of minimalism. Is it usually done with landscape? I have seen some with flowers. I just don’t have the eye for this yet. I prefer the snowy church scene. So clean and peaceful and I can hear the silence. Thanks for sharing your amazing talent.

SUPER video with a ton of info !!! Love how you explain it all. I find it sometimes difficult to find balance (if needed or not) in some of my minimalist photos ( similar as your photo @ 6:49 ) . Certainly with a lot of negative space I tend to crop. My favorite of the Black Church is the one with the threatening sky. Thanks a lot for this very useful video Mads !!!

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing. I love minimalist art, however I rarely find myself making it. I'm drawn to complex scenes with numerous, visual elements. I'm stimulated by the visual relationship of seemingly unrelated elements and am drawn to capture the "choreography". I think I will need to work harder to produce a piece of minimalist work I like because it's counter to what my mind most naturally notices.

I really like both the minimal church photos you showed, for different reasons. I like the left one because it's moody, conjures of feelings of mystery, curiosity, inquisition, foreboding, however, the one on the right conjures up feelings of calm, serene, a sense of relaxation. I like the left one more though just because I like taking darker, moodier, rich color, very detailed photos more than photos where most of the content is snowy white negative space. I really like the photos you took of the layered mountains and the one with the dark clouds above the pier/bridge. That's beautiful work.

I think both church photos are splendid. For the minimalist part I'll go for sure with the white. But personally I would hang both side to side on my wall. Feel like a Ying Yang duo.

Thats the beauty of photography as we all take different paths and through time develop our own tastes. As you said Mads definitions can be subjective and have seen others comment about someones style not fitting with what they believe is the definition of that genre. Even if the genre is not one that I wish to pursue it still doesn't stop me from appreciating what the other person has achieved. Personally at the moment, as well as landscape photography in general, I am really in to Black and White and for me its about the journey not the destination. Enjoyed your images today and delighted to see the subscriber count going over the 90K and excited to see you closing in on the 100K

I have watched a ton of KZread videos on the topic of photography over the years. Most, if not 95% of the presenters are talking heads -- and the photos they display suck so I get uninterested very fast -- if you cant shoot yourself -- what possibly can you teach me? You my friend are super talented and I walked away learning something through your tutorial. Thanks. BTW: I am forcing myself to learn how to shoot black and white. I just bought a Leica Q2 Mono. Not because I am super rich -- but I want to learn a new trick so to speak. Its hard. But if you ever have a chance to do a video on black and white -- I'm sure you would crush it -- and teach me a ton more than those who say they specialize in it.

Marvelous episode, Mads! I like both versions of your Black Church, but if I would have to pick one, it would be the snowy version. However, my preference would be to hang both next to each other on a light gray wall with the snowy version to the right. I also appreciate your occasional adventures into B&W ... Whatever you call it, minimalistic or simplified photography, your photos convey a certain simple visual elegance.

As an avid amateur photographer, I personally find a minimalist image much more engaging when is is taken as a monochrome. There is a greater degree of contrast and mood which enhance the simple composition. This is of course a personal creative choice for the photographer!
