Great puzzle. Contrary to our friend Julian, I had to use notations until I found the naked 5 in block 1. Then the final push to complete the puzzle was rather comfortable.

Very interesting language. The jargon is not altogether clear to me, but I like. I have used “candidate moves”, etc in solving some sudoku and have shared it with my 7th, 5th, and 4th grade students over the years. But this video makes me realize I was putting too many candidates without reasoning or applying the limitations. I play chess and solve cubes , and fold some origami, and I’m a beginner pianist, which all have their own languages. Beautiful. 💚 Peace!

81:25 - it took me quite a while to make those deductions that you found, so clearly i need to work on my deduction & notation technique... but even with those i somehow ran into a contradiction and had to restart -- twice... i really don't know how that happened, i guess i need to go back to the drawing board... or maybe i should just leave the smart stuff to people like you who are actually competent

7 min. PPPE. Some high lights... *Box5 finished with 14s and 57s pairs and unique 9. *Box1.,, 5,6 unique's and 789 trio. *Box8 found quad 2378 & 459 trio. *37 pairs in col 4. *179 trio in row2. After solve l saw vedio the box5 is similar and box1 found 5,6 unique's first and than 789 trio next., and rest of all totally different. Nice explanation. Good puzzle. I expected today something hard. Today's Guardian puzzle made me tough.

I saw comment section not easy to somebody. I took solving notes when I solved..,but I thought it's not necessary, so I left only highlighted pairs, tripple, quad. I think 6 in r2c5, 5 in r2c3, 5 in r9c1 getting hard. 6 is only place in Col 5 , see r1c7-6, r8c9-6, r9c2-6 block cells then only r2c5 got 6. 6:47 ., 5 in r2c3, I got before 789 tripple , by cross checking col 3 needs 1258, in box1 there is 1,2 & r2c9 is 8, it's easily given me 5 in r2c3, afterwards I got 789 tripple. Next 5 in r9c1, the same cross checking of row 9 needs 23578.., col 1 got 237 and 8s Snyder in box 7, it's given 5 in r9c1, after then I got 2378 quad in box 8 and row 9, and 459 tripple in box 8, the same time 37 pairs I got in Col 4, next puzzle went easily.

    A fine puzzle, as we can always expect from such a well-seasoned master. Given the theme of the video, I found it surprisingly easy without notation. Here's my fourth path, after a few optimizing runs (27 = row 2 column): 27, 74, 25, 33, 23, 63, 55, 38, 91 (hidden single), 28 (hidden single, owing to pair in column 4), 59, 34, 95, 87, 19, 37, 96, 99, 94, 77, 67, 47, 15, 85, 16, 14, 11, 62, 42, 65, 45, 69, 49, 61, 51, 41, 58, 48, 52, 73, 83, 43, 68, 82, 72, 32, 22, 36, 78, 88, 76, 24, 26, 54, 56, 84, 86. I haven't had much luck with variations on this one. Most of them have been too easy. Here's the best I have managed: 034 000 560 200 000 007 100 090 008 000 308 000 008 070 300 000 502 000 800 010 004 700 000 003 065 000 120 034000560200000007100090008000308000008070300000502000800010004700000003065000120 HoDoKu rating: Extreme 1934. Andrew Stuart rating: Very Hard Grade 329. Oh, by the way, I spotted the naked single in R2C3 by following the paths of 7 and 9 in column 3, and 8 in row 2. It was essentially what you did, but without notation.

Thomas Snyder himself, eh? (Much later.) I finished the puzzle, but couldn't comment until now. Long before I filled out the grid, I found a 123 Y-wing in blocks 3 and 6, that let me place the 3 in block 6. I'm going to resolve the puzzle from my point of bifurcation, because I noticed that the digit the bifurcate gave me came from a simple "claiming pair". I expect to reencounter a second Y-wing in blocks 8 and 9, in 278. The second Y-wing came right after placing the 5, but it was only there because I didn't notice an 8 facing the 78 pair. It still cracked the puzzle. 1:30 I made unobservant mistakes later in the puzzle, but at least I saw the central block starting out. 3:30 My version of that mistake is just not seeing the pointing pair, and it happened at least once here. (No, I'm thinking of a claiming pair.) 6:50 Yes, the triple and the 5 in block 1 appeared during my ordinary course of solving. 9:20 That's the claiming pair that I missed my first solve.

I find there are some good things about Snyder notation, but also some drawbacks. I can't say I am used to employing it, preferring to start by going as far as I can without any notation. I then go usually to bi-value cell notation, which occasionally throws up unexpected pairs, of even a Y wing (or XY Wing) now and then. One thing I miss sometimes is box/line (row or column) reduction. My worst mistake is when I can solve for two numbers at the same time, and I write them in the wrong way round - it is frustrating to do that.

  • @SmartHobbies

15:10 was my time. Very bad... but I did it alone! 😅 It take my about 7min to realise that I already had 8 in box 7 (at column 3) so the cell at R9C1 can't be 8!!!!!! Aaaaaa 😂 At least I didn't give up! Thanks for the puzzle!
