I love the term “slow travel”. That’s how I roll too. Just existing in another place is so refreshing. When my boyfriend and I travel together our first order of business is finding a nice patio with good people-watching and ordering a couple beers.

FOMO coming from greed is exactly the reminder I needed. I'm not traveling right now, or any time soon, but I think it applies to all types of FOMO: the books to be read, the places to visit, the experiences to "acquire", the food to taste, the languages to speak, the food to taste, everything. THANK YOU ❤

Thank you for shearing🙏💗 my experience of happiness was several times in Fcrance . I worked there for short time, once Paris, another a small town at southfrance Pau Pirenees... then i went again to paris by muself and enjoy that special air.. and also went Amiens, Rheims, several time Lourdes.. grotes du Betharaam.. but most of all i fall in love with small place upon mountains Pic du Midi. There was an observatory/planetary at 3 km high place... it was my very hapiness place to be and have a look surrounded mountains. I fee myself as in Tove Janson ilustration picture, even there was a lot of people, i can switch them off...and be alone... so i did at Biarritz.... so great ocean feelings... i take photos and now they bring me back there..where i have been.... i immerse at these sights and memories.. i can feel green leaves, blue visterias, smell of them, a pink chestnuts blooming, a yelow ginks and autumn palmas, and taste of my sandwich with cheese, i eat, sitting on bench back side of NotreDame, and observing a lot people pass in their directions, and no one did not take a look on me, i can feel again quie alone as as wish..... and so did i when small travels in my surroundings there, in Latvija, is a lot beautiful for me places. I was in Moscow too, and it seems me so huge, but i liked a places, museums, ostankino tower sightseing, i was even in mausoleum also, by curiosity. I try see everything possible intersting, and i was happy with what i see. I renember eskimo ice cream on stick and wrapp in folia like paper as conus form.. so tasty... i use to write down my feelings, and when i go through these diaries time to tine / 🙂obščaja tetradj... i am back there with full feelings of all that things..... till this i have a good travel experience. I wish somewhat or somewhere go to Baikal and Abakhan.. but times since 2019 is different now. And theese poor things24 february, is a very heavy... Who knows. Will see. 🙏💗💗💗there must be peace.... must stop.

I also love grocery shopping during travels instead of restaurants. It's so much more fun and enjoyable in many more ways than picking something blindly from a menu. I was the "do all, see all, feel exhausted" when I was in my teens and 20's. Now in my 50's I've had to slow down and take my time due to mobility issues. When I travel, I go slower and am able to see things more clearly. I go places I want to visit and appreciate them more. When I get home, I feel happy and refreshed. I'm blessed to be slower and more appreciative because of it. I pray you and Brian are enjoying your time together and enjoying the new experiences. God bless.

My stress in terms of not being able to view "everything" when on a trip is related to how expensive the destination is. In terms of air travel, stay and distance. I found that I was a lot more anxious when I was going to more expensive countries because I knew that the chances of going back were slim. Whereas in cheaper or closer destinations I felt like if I really wanted to, I could always go back.. Imagine going to New Zealand for example (which sadly I have not done). Starting from Europe the cost and distance of the trip is almost unreal. I would feel obligated to see as much as possible in the 1-2 weeks that I would probably be there. But being stressed, takes away from the experience.. a double edge sword really. Unless money and/or time is not an object of course which is not the case for most of us. But in practice I do enjoy being lazy when on a trip, having a slow pace. Not always easy when you're not alone and people want to see as much as possible. I would love to travel alone tbh. I just feel that I wouldn't have any photos of myself.. it may seem vain but I do enjoy having some photos of myself when abroad. I don't use social media actively so I don't want photos for that purpose but having photos of myself feels like I was really a part of the trip, evidence that it really happened. How silly! But it's how I feel..

I enjoy taking some photos of me in a new place for a visual memory too! And I think I would feel somewhat like you if I traveled somewhere far away and expensive (which hasn't happened yet). Seems like we feel obligated to justify the amount of money spent... Finding a perfect travel partner is important indeed.

At the end of June my husband and I took a 5 day trip to the mountains in Colorado, USA. He wanted to get up early and stay out late and to go go go. It was very stressful. When we returned home we had driven over 2000 miles (about 3219 km) around the mountains. Beautiful views, but cramming so much in a short time was exhausting. I would prefer a slow and relaxed pace.

That's EXACTLY how I've been travelling for years now. Generally, I take too little pictures :D But I always want to be in the moment and to act according to my own needs. And when I'm super stressed, anxious and generally in a bad mood during my vacation, well, then that's not a vacation! As an anthropologist, the thing I struggle with is how much I want to put effort into getting to know local people & culture, and how much I just want to practice self care...

Now the world is opening up, after Covid, people are rushing abroad and I have felt guilty that I love being in my hometown neighbourhood. It is very beautiful and my home is a small cabin in the woods, overlooking the ocean. I am learning to stand up to peoples' pressures of making travel plans and embrace my simple daily rituals, which include shopping slowly at my farmers market and savouring a coffee afterwards in an outdoor cafe (the highlight of my week!).

Although I do enjoy travelling, I also find there is a social pressure for everyone to like travelling. If someone says that they don't really like going places, for whatever reason like travel anxiety, money you spend, not liking the actual travel time going from A to B, messing up your routine etc, people are going to look at them like they're weird. I don't think it was like this before. The pressure to travel and enjoy it, has never been so high. I find it amazing being happy where you are because that's where you spend most of your life: the place you live at. And it's a validation of your choice to live somewhere and not somewhere else. And honestly if I lived in the woods and had an ocean view, I would never want to leave! If you don't mind me asking, which country/place do you live in? It sounds dreamy!

For me, taking photos can be a form of mindfulness -- observing what I want to capture or remember about a place, keeping my eyes open for small but important details, pausing to look closely. But on the flip side, being too focused on the shot can also distract me from everything that's not encapsulated within the frame! It's a balancing act for sure.

Great tips!🌸🙏🏻 I think knowing yourself and what you enjoy is important. Rather than fulfilling the expectation of seeing what everyone else believes is the iconic sights, follow what would make you happy. If you don’t wish to stand in long crowded spaces just because you think you should check something off a list don’t. I’ve always lived in tourist spaces so for me a vacation is respite from that.

When I look back on favorite memories from different trips, it's often just walking around and exploring with no set plan or destination. Just go wandering and see what I see. Discover things organically. Those experiences are often more fun than the big famous tourist attractions. So now when I plan a tip I always try to include a day or part of a day to just wander. I think it's a good idea to think about what activities YOU truly enjoy vs what you are 'supposed" to do in a place. It sounds obvious but a lot of people just do the things they think they are supposed to do, places you "have to go" or eat or shop, instead of following their own interests and preferences. For example: I love old things, I love architecture, I love parks and old cemeteries, I love thrift stores and grocery stores. I don't really love fancy restaurants or clubs or designer boutiques. I love water, being near water or on water in boats. If a place has any kind of river or coastline, I would enjoy a boat tour more than a bus tour. I want to walk around an area, not just drive by it or through it.

Dear Ana and Brian Another great vid, lifestyle and travel tips. I heard something really resonates w/ me - how everything seems just "so loud and fast now". it crazy at nice places often there are the longest lines and all people are doing is trying take perfect selfie/picture. Not even enjoying the moment. I too, have travel overwhelm and recall a trip I took with family where I started to get vertigo from doing so much, and moving so quickly from one place to next. Luckily, I got my day to pick & just wanted day by water in small town. Resting at a beach, even on rocks, just hanging, watching the water, people was my simple highlights. Finally, I think so many and the planet can benefit more embracing "slower" lifestyle. Cheers breaking norms.

I just arrived home from vacation with my extended family and while it was nice, I look forward to a vacation that is slow and just focuses on being, seeing the scenery (be it nature or the city), and eating the local food. That, and maybe a few museums and important historical places, is all I want to do. I realised some years ago that I don't really care about the big sights like the Eiffeltower or royal palaces. They are no more interesting than in photos of them.

A few years ago I finally got to visit Vienna after wanting to go there for many years. Although we stayed in the centre we hardly went to any of the usual „must see“ places you see in every documentary. We went to part of the design museum and got quite involved in the Wiener Werkstaette movement of arts and crafts, I bought a cushion cover in a fabric designed in 1908 in a hidden away shop that specialises in these textiles, we found a department store café with a fabulous city view, walked for miles admiring the architecture and just soaked up the atmosphere. One evening we saw a movie in a small indie theatre and another we went to a great Chris Rea concert at very short notice, another evening we just stayed in quietly… so no, I did not visit the „sights“ but I did adore Vienna! So special. We do the same thing wherever we go, one of the best tips is to visit a local supermarket to see real local specialities 😃

It seems in my life, I've mostly only traveled (cross 1/2 the USA by bus when younger and airplanes in recent years) to visit family. Now that I'm older, I don't really want to travel at all but it's the only way I will ever see my Mom and brother/nephew and aunts back home. I like the simple things when I do go ... sharing meals with them, walking, chatting, + nature which my home state is full of. For "seeing" the rest of the country and world I sort of rely on videos from others and pictures. Over the past 22 years whenever I've traveled I had to go alone except once on the sad occasion my Dad passed and my husband flew up to get me and drive me and Dad's truck back to Texas. I made multiple solo flights back and forth during Dad's illness which thank God was all before COVID. My last trip to Vermont was 2019 and I took a few pictures. Mostly nature ones. I like it when I get someone to take my picture so that I have something to show me I was there. LOL But back when my husband traveled with me ... we did do simple car trips in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas ... not vacations but day trips. I enjoyed those. We also traveled Oklahoma to Texas and back to visit family and drove and flew to Vermont to see mine. Both Scotland and Iceland interest me a lot and Alaska but I can't see myself actually going except virtually. In winter I like to drive on day trips to the more country parts of our area and enjoy the scenery. Your tips are right on for me ... I always enjoy the day better when it's not too overloaded.

Experience consumption! Yes! This phrase is a perfect description of what travel has become for most people. It feels like a competition to devour as much as possible so you can brag about it. And taking photos of everything!!🤦🏼‍♀️ I am lucky enough to live in a place where I can sit on a cliff and watch the annual humpback migration up the east coast of Australia. Sadly the vast majority of people are standing looking out at sea through the screens of their phones trying to catch the elusive perfect photo. They miss the entire experience of just being there, of watching these majestic creatures, marvelling at their beauty and grace, because their entire focus is on a screen. They miss the pod's of dolphins surfing the waves, the stingrays and turtles too which are ever present close to shore and all so they can get that perfect Instagram photo.

Being exhausted while travelling is something I only know too well. Over time, I developed a routine that is even slower than yours. After visiting something or even hiking for one day, I have a day off and just hang around where I happen to be with my camper. That is the right amount of time for me to integrate what I saw. It also prevents me from getting into this strange internal arousal that is no longer a pleasant excitement but greed for more kicking in.

I stop taking so many pictures and learn to really "look" with all my senses instead of being busy taking pictures that I can find in postcards or travel books...also thanks to Airbnbs we can now experience a bit more the life of the local. I also stop going to so many museums and prefer just walking around without following a guide book...

You have the right idea about traveling. I like the idea that you are spending 11 days in one place and just enjoying the everyday life. I have a friend who likes to visit our house. She will tell me “I just want to sit at your kitchen table, drink some tea, and visit.” We will walk the beach and cook some interesting foods. She is friends with a well known chef, so she likes to cook us a meal. We both like to make crafts, so we will have some craft days. We may go on a trolley tour of the city, but we’re not going to see every museum. It is always a relaxing and enjoyable visit. This note is for Brian: I am so happy that you two are finally together. I love how when Ana speaks, she has a beautiful smile on her face. You are making memories for a lifetime. ❤

I have found, the few times we have had a “special break” the reality didn’t live up to the anticipation. I much prefer simplicity. A beautiful view helps but even wet moss on a tree branch or the glimpse of an otter or eagle is enough to bring holiday joy.

My friend used to call them "soul pictures" you really mindfully try to remember every detail of the place. I think that is what you were doing, really. I find those pictures stick with me better, but I have never really like taking photos. They never really look the way I remember it. I think it is also really valuable to ask local people what they like best about the place they live. You can find amazing things this way.

This is an interesting list. I wonder if people in my country suffer from this travel FOMO so much because we are allotted so few vacation days. On top of that, we are kind of punished taking the vacation days. If you manage to get three or four days off, it’s probably all we are going to get and the natural inclination is to get as much out of the time off as possible. In my job, we are still supposed to bring our laptops with us and work every night. The work we come back to after just a week off (I was sick had had a week off bc COVID) was piled so high it took me working seven days a week for an entire month to get caught up. This makes me not want to take any more time off because of the stress of returning to this insurmountable pile of work, even if I take my laptop with me there is all the paperwork I get. I wish my country valued slowing down and unplugging/checking out.

During the summer we usually camp somewhere in our beautiful part of the country, away from museums, restaurants, etc. This year we traveled to a large Midwest city, visiting museums, an auto plant, a zoo, and many restaurants. It was amazing, but it always takes me quite awhile to recover from the forced information overload. Camping gives me the opportunity to absorb, to create, and to relax. Great video today, Ana. ❤️

Hi Ana. So Nice to see you again. I did my last day of work yesterday. Now I have four weeks off. Next week's Wednesday, my husband and I will go to the mountains. A four-hour drive from our home. We have a cabin there that we rent through his job. There will be four overnight stays in total, with hiking around the mountain nature. My husband is in addition to his everyday work also a nature photographer so he always has his camera with him. We do also take time to see and experience the surroundings of the beautiful and peaceful nature without a camera. I myself am not so much into photography anymore, so for me its more like meditation and mindfulness when walking/hiking. I enjoy being "up there" looking for the reindeers that are there, enjoying a cup of Coffee with "sapmi" coffeecheese melting in the mug, visiting the huge waterfalls and just being in a state of inner peace far away from everything "ordinary". Wishing You a lovely stay in Tirana ☀️ With Love and Light from Sweden /Nina

Wonderful and thoughtful insights. I have thought about many of these issues too. I think my biggest challenge is taking too many photos. When I decide not to do it, I often don't get any photos. I'd like to find a happy balance. All the best in your new location. It looks like a beautiful place.

Well age has, of course, impacted the way I travel. I travel much more slowly now. But I always preferred to take my time. I like discovering the neighborhood around me. I’m getting antsy now. I have to stay put till 8-11 when I am having a brain MRI to help diagnose my seizure problem, but after that I really need to be in my car and on the move. I hope to visit San Francisco where I lived for so many years, and be in Seattle when my grand niece is born in September. I just need to be moving!! Sounds like you and Bryan are enjoying Albania. Hi Ana, thank you for the video on slow travel. I am like you when I travel. I avoid queues, and prefer to sit on a bench and observe the people and my surroundings. I enjoy buying a few things to eat and finding a place to sit and snack and watch the world go by. This is a grea video, I love your advice and will deffinitely embrace it on this summer vacation. I also recently watched a videowhere a woman suggested to when traveling try to introduce yourself to the flora and fauna of the place, as well as lore related to it and the general folklore of the place. I find it sparks a special conection while visiting as you come to see familiar faces in plants and animals all around and even get a sence of comunity. Also I am your follower frm Serbia. How did you find Belgrade?

I love your advice. I've always been the type of person to stray away from the tourist areas in search of the local people, food, and culture of a place. So, no surprise, when I moved to the Philippines that I strayed far away from the cities and found a place in the countryside. It was the best thing I did, as in the city, I would not have experienced the culture and tribal make up of the Filipino people living in the countryside. As much as I would love to move right back to where I was living, as I feel very connected to the people there, I know I must grow further, thus why I'm heading to Cambodia next, and will once again live in a place where I can learn and grow from the wisdom of the local people and their culture. A lot of times people try to convince me I need to go see places, but that's not really what I'm into. I'm more into getting to know people, not looking at a bunch of places. Ha Ha.

An excellent video about a topic you don't hear discussed much (at least I haven't). I've also traveled a lot and like you, generally want to limit myself to museums, sites, etc., because taking in so much new info is overwhelming. I love to just grab a coffee or drink on a patio or anywhere, relax, observe. These demanding agendas to see so much and do everything are so much like the performance pressures of work--why carry this over into travel?

  • @anagoldberg
