In this week’s episode, we discuss 5 simple steps for perfectly focused landscape photos. Understanding how to focus and where to focus in order to get your entire scene perfectly sharp is arguably the most difficult aspect of landscape photography. How many times have you taken a photo and focused on the background only to find the foreground is out of focus, or focused on the foreground only to find that your background is now out of focus? That's the problem we'll solve today with these 5 super simple steps.
I've heard focusing techniques and best practices explained many times, some are articulated very well and others have left my heard spinning. I'm hoping this video will easily explain the multiple different focusing approaches that you can apply to your landscape photography. The three focusing techniques discussed in this video will solve the vast majority of all focusing situations you may encounter while on-location, but there are certain situations that require a technique called "Focus Stacking", here's a link to a video I made on this very topic:
Focus Stacking Video • The FASTEST WAY to FOC...
Regardless what type of photography you're into, the camera focus tips and settings discussed here can be applied to any genre of photography. So understanding how to get perfectly focused landscape photos will also enable you to do the same across various other types of photography as well!
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.
Thanks for watching everyone!

Mark, your channel has quickly become one of my favorites. Not only is the info great, but very practical and presented in an easy to follow format. Plus I like that you jump right into things instead of having some obnoxious intro music and animation sequence. I also appreciate the overall aesthetic of your work space, information pacing, tone, lighting, etc. Just an overall good experience with someone who is actually relatable. Keep up the good work

You are a born presenter Mark. Calm and concise, with simple explanations of what is sometimes complex issues. Now, I’ve just got to remember to turn off my VR when on a tripod.
Simple and Clear. Best video on focusing on youtube.

This weekend I followed your tip of putting my focus point about 1/3 into my scene and it was a game changer! I feel like my photos are sharper and more appealing! Thank you so much! This was the first I had heard that tip.
Thanks Mark - great information. Got home last night after sunset shot and had soft images. Will try these tips at same location ! Cheers
Assuredly the best discussion on the subject matter anywhere on the KZread; simple, crisp, clean, no fluff, no dizzying jargon. Thanks Mark.

Sitting here with my out-of-focus pictures from a snowy mountain hiking trip that looked great on the camera screen, going "Yep, I messed that up" - "Oh and yes, I missed that one too". Awesome video, albeit 4 days late for me! xD

New drinking game, watch this video and take a shot each time Mark says "ultimately". Just kidding Mark. I only recently came across your channel and it has already become my favorite photography channel. I cant stand long drawn out and annoying intros, ridiculous music and dizzying b-roll. You get right to business and I like that. Your explanations and examples are easy to understand, you speak clearly and don't use made up words. I learn a lot each time I watch one of your videos. Thank you for the time and effort you put in to them.
Very important technique explained simply, another very helpful video, thanks Mark!! I m a fan now!!👍😀

Another tip for aging eyes is to use a magnifying loupe in addition to the max magnification your cameras manual focusing aids can provide. I use this extensively for astro-landscapes to get pin-point focus on the stars.
Hands down. No questions. By far this is the ultimate video on focus I have ever seen. Thank you Mark. Grateful to you🙏💐

Another spot on video! The hardest part of landscape photography for me is finding good light. It's so hard when you are on vacation with the family doing the site seeing thing during the harsh daylight and coming away with any keepers. I often go out alone early or late for that very reason but it's always a crap shoot when you are at a famous landmark hoping for that killer morning or evening light and often turns out to be boring and gray. Sometimes I feel my trip was kind of a waste if I don't come home with some shots I feel I could hang on the wall. Then again, I consider it fun bonding time with the family so it's a win win either way you look at it...

There's no such thing as boring light, only boring images. Don't blame the light.
Some valuable tips delivered with precision and clarity, as always. That said I've found that attempting to stabilize a tripod mounted camera by hanging things from a tripod hook usually makes things worse, not better. Backpacks, in particular, will swing around in the wind with resultant vibration. My solution is to carry a length of shock cord with I attach to a solid object (heavy rock, tree root, etc) on the ground and then loop over the tripod hook under tension using a lanyard knot. Works like a charm as long as the wind is not really whistling.
Great video. Simple and easy to understand. Thank you
Thanks for these useful tips.

I've been using Nikons for sixty years. When I use a current Nikon the first thing I do is determine how to set if for manual focus, aperture, and shutter speed. This is essential! Yes i use automatic modes when appropriate. And I always shoot many combinations so that I have something to work with on the computer in Lightroom.
what a great presentation - well informed, well delivered and full of useful stuff! Well done Mark and thank you for posting
