My male syrian who died from old age was very verbal... He would make different noises for communicating what he wanted/felt... I never experienced this with the females, but one of them had a cute way of shaking from excitement if I leaned over to her box and talked very friendly to her ❤❤❤

I've heard my hamsters make a stressed out squeaking noise before (I heard my hamster make a loud crying squeak sound in her sleep once too) and they have another gentle squeaking/chirping/clicking noise that some hamsters will make when they find food, are rolling in sand or digging around and they seem to be enjoying themselves

Hamsters a lot smarter than some people think. I have had a lot o hamsters, and my most recently passed hamster was so spoiled. He learned how to tell us when he wanted the lights to be turned off. He would wake up at 6PM, and I lived in a studio so the light would be on. After working on a few things, the would stare at me and then lightly bit the bars to make noice if i didnt notice him. That was my signal to turn of the lights. As soon as I did that, he stopped biting the bars and off he went running on his wheel. (Note he was not CHEWING like you see in thee videos online. He would bite a couple of times and stop to wait for me to notice.)

Victoria, im not sure that if you will see this, but i got my first hamster today, and all your videos are extremely helpful. I already knew before that a small cage is not fit for a hamster, but you have helped me and my family be educated. It is currently living in a 47 x 23 x 26 niteangel vista enclosure, and i just want to say thank you for what you do because you have saved so many hamsters

I got a hamster named coco, made her the linmon cage (well over 450 sq inch floor space) she had a 10 inch wheel, different substrates, hideouts, she had paper bedding under which she could comfortably burrow and nest. I let her free roam every night in quite a big room. She exhibited signs of unhappiness despite all this, was constantly cage pacing and wanting to get out. Theres only so much time i can let her free roam before i let her back in her cage, even i have to sleep at some point. And i live in india so its not easy to acquire accessories for hamsters at all. However eventually the stress got to her and she passed today because of wet tail. She was a year and a half old. I wanted to educate some and let them know that sometimes a hamster simply does not want to be caged, even when i let her free roam in the room she'd try to climb the walls! I have another hamster who is very happy in her cage. However i am extremely disheartened that in spite of my best efforts i wasnt able to save Coco but i accept the fact that there was nothing more i could do and this wont discourage me from adopting more hamsters in the future.

my adopted hamster is the same way. you honestly described it perfectly, my male syrian hamster went from the tiny tales castle cage, to a 70gal bin, to finally a 25in by 50in (the biggest cage I could find online) and he still cage paces, over grooms himself, and chews on the side ventilation holes. No matter how much he gets free roam time, no matter how many expensive supplies i buy, no matter how much bedding he has, he still expresses stress behavior. I feel like im missing something or doing something wrong. I’m really trying my best to make him happy. although when I adopted him he came with his old tiny tales cage. the plastic inside was all chewed up and the bars were rusted and full if bite marks. I don’t know how long he had to endure that but he probably spent a long of time trying to escape. Sometimes I theorize that because of the tiny living space and lack of enrichment, he spent most of his time trying to escape, now he’s obsessed with it. It was really the only thing he knew. but on the bright side, I’m starting to see him express normal hamster behavior more and more. hes a bright friendly little guy and loves attention and being talked to. he perked up a lot since I got him. He had a bald spot behind his head that’s slowly growing back. I’m just happy to let him experience a better life. He can now be a hamster as much as a captive hamster can be. sorry this is so long I love my baby

@@briannalynes8133 I guess some hamsters just like some people are never happy no matter how many good things they have in their lives, they will always want more and more. Also no matter how big a cage you put them in, at the end of the day it's a closed place so it seems logical to me that they want to escape.

So I bought a winter white dwarf hamster a day ago, and I've been doing a lot of research on to how to enrich my hamster's life. I bought the cheapest cage I could get for a decent size as I was out with my mom and my parents can be a little strict. Especially when it comes to prices. It's two stories, and both are 14 inches by 9 inches, which makes a grand total of 252 square inches, which I know doesn't reach the 450 minimum. He does have another little room though that is 4 inches by 4. To compensate, I bought him a tunnel with yellow chewable (non-toxic) material so he can make a nest. He seems to really like it and even brought some of his food into it! I bought him other chewable toys and branches, he even has an 8 inch wheel which he likes to use. And because I know they like to burrow, I made him a bit more than 4 inches of bedding. I also put some treats in there so he can scavenge. He has food, two water sources, a bowl and the classic water dispenser, but he has preferred the water dispenser. Other than that, I also bought this ball so I take him out of the cage (he climbs into my hand or into a cup) and I place him in and let him walk around my room with my door closed. I have dogs as well, and he seems really unbothered and calm about them. Of course, I know to never have my dogs alone with my hamster nor have them be too close. Overall, he was a little stressed the first night but with some adjustments that I made (the current state that my cage is in) he's been calm and hasn't tried to climb walls or bite them at all. He seemed to really enjoy the burrowing, the wheel, and the tunnel. As well as the ball. He seems generally happy, but I'm afraid that long term he may become bored. I wanted to buy him a sand box so he can clean himself, and some things to climb, as well as buying little seeds and whatnot and spreading them around so he can scavenge some more, but I am afraid it'll be too crammed. OVERALL, he seems happy for now and he's really nice (he cleans himself when he's in my hands so I think that's a good sign?) but Im scared he'll get bored long term. I want to invest in a bigger cage, preferably a glass one but I don't think I can do 25 inches by 18 inches. I measured my area, and my desk can only fit 25 inches by 16 inches. So I wasn't sure if that would be ok instead of the 18 inches. Additionally, money is somewhat a little tight right now with my parents, and having a minimum wage job that pays 15.5 dollars an hour makes it so investing into cages may take a while. So I was wondering if you had any specific cages on the cheaper side, or recommendations on where I can find some cheaper ones with the previous requirements mentioned. I also wanted to know if 25 inches by 16 inches is still too small. I don't really have space anywhere else in my room or house.

Great video…full of examples of specific hamster behaviors…even clever escapes 😬 Admittedly I was selfishly wondering if there are any behaviors that “show” your hamster is maybe not “loves you” but feels safe/content. Our elderly Syrian loves to come out at night from his enclosure & sit in his blanket on our lap. He grooms, eats food we hand feed, and “seems to love” having his head/behind his ears stroked (he’ll close his eyes and drift off to sleep until you stop, then he wakes back up).

It's basically grains or seeds still on their stems. They provide enrichment because the hamster has to put work into getting the food rather than it being placed in a bowl. They're more common to see in the bird section of pet stores. I give my hamsters millet sprays because they are easy to find where I live. I've offered oat sprays as well, and flax is a popular one. Like with most hamster treats, it's best to give a variety to see what they like, but not over do it because you want them to have a balanced diet. Offering fresh sprays once a week is usually enough.

My hammy has been very chill for the month I've had him, but last night while I had the top of his bin cage off, he peeked his head over the top of the wall once, peaked over it a few more times, and then tried to climb it. This is the first time he's tried to get out as far as I'm aware, so I've put some heavy stuff on the edges of the lid while my mom and I speedrun building his new, big enclosure. His cage is just above the minimum floor space for his species, although he has all the other essentials like a good wheel, food, clean water, a big sand pit, as many hides as I could fit, 10" of paper bedding, chews, boredom breakers. Despite the limited space he currently has, the fact that he hasn't had much/any interest in escaping up until now makes me happy. No cage pacing, no trying to get at the top mesh, keeping busy all night. I'm glad that he's happy and I'm excited to get that upgrade for him anyways!

One of my hamsters years ago, a female named Ouida (weed-ah, I know, a pothead name) used to constantly escape almost every night, but only to end up climbing up the bed comforter to cuddle up beside us in bed. After dealing with it for a few weeks, we finally stopped immediately putting her back in the cage, and would just let her stay outside the cage at night because it was the bedroom, so she really didn't have any place to actually hide, just under the bed, night stand, or dresser, but she would usually just wander around under, and near our bed, and in the morning we'd usually wake up to her hanging out above our heads crawling from pillow to pillow waiting to be put back in the cage so she could eat (which is what she would do immediately after being put back in her cage). I had a whole bunch of hamsters back in the day. So many that even though I cared about them, I had too many for me to really get attached to them. But Ouida was one of the special ones. I actually miss her quite a bit. The poor thing developed a tumor on her side that kept getting larger and larger over the course of several weeks. At the time she was about two and a half years old which would be nearing the end of a hamster's life, so there wasn't really anything the vet could do for her. We knew eventually she was going to die, and the day that it happened we more or less knew it was coming, but we still cried. Out of all the hamsters, gerbils, and Siberian dwarfs I ever had, she was the ONLY one I can truly say was a great pet. Typically hamsters are kinda assholes. They prefer solitude, they typically don't enjoy hanging out with, or even being held by anyone, so they tend to constantly try to climb out of, or away from you as you hold them. Very seldom do they simply "chill" when you hold them. And putting them in those plastic balls for them to run around the house and other places is the only way you can leave them unsupervised outside their cage.

Hi Victoria ! I’ve been watching you since at least 2021 when I got my first hamster thinking back now, I remember getting my first hamster for Christmas I got one and my parents gave me one of those pink petsmart hamster cages. At the time I didn’t know anything wrong with it, that hamster would bite every time you tried to feed it and give it water and you could never touch it with getting bitten. Then in 2022 I got another hamster trying to use a bin cage. Turns out, it was also too small, however it was larger than the other and the hamster lasted for about a year and socialized a pretty good bit. This year currently 2023 I’ve been watching your videos extra hard and doing research on hamsters. I’ve found out what I’ve been doing wrong and I’m saving up a big budget to supply everything needed for my little hamster I’ll be getting now. It’s crazy to think about how much I messed up with those little hamsters in the past. However moving forward I hope to give the hamsters the best life they could ever have, but it’s all thanks to you for letting us know how to take care of our hamsters and your videos are amazing. Thank you !! ❤ (edited: what food diet would you recommend for a dwarf hamster ?? )

Thank you for this information, after I watched this I realized that my teddy bear hamster sometimes bites the top of her cage(she's in a 20 gallon tank), so Im am planning on giving her a bigger cage so she has more room for activities. I'm also planning on giving my dwarf hamster her old 20 gallon tank to up grade her cages, though she hasn't shown any sign of being unhappy I still like to give her more space to adventure

I remember not knowing about proper enrichment, cage size, etc & not thinking anything of monkey barring. I just hanged a hammock up so he wouldn’t fall (this was YEARS ago. I’ll never forget stumbling upon this channel last year when I was on sick leave for long c*vid. I was having poor cognitive function & these videos not only helped me w enrichment, etc, but also helped me cognitively. I can proudly say NONE of my hamsters bar bite, monkey bar, pace, or are lazy 🥹🥹🥹 I know you prefer 800+ sq in but I have 2 prevue 528s & neither hamster exhibits stress. I’m also able to include dig boxes, 8-9” wheels (they’re dwarves), branches, tunnels, multichamber hides, & other smaller hides. I also have a 200 qt & 160 qt bin cages And finally, for my Syrian, I have a Pawhut that is a tiny bit smaller than 48x24”!!! I’m SOOOOO thankful for your videos. They truly deserve WAY MORE views.

I plan to build my own hamster home that's going to be 70 x 30 inches, which is 2100 square inches, all for a Syrian female. I want to make up for being the typical child that had one in a tiny cage and knew no better, parents knew no better, pet shop knew no better. Had the typical bar biting and monkey bar hanging. This time I'll give one a better life and currently it's the ideal pet for my working pattern.

Today I Told my best friend that her hamster needs good proper care so they could be happy but she rejected me, after then she told me that she was broke and couldn't afford those expensive items for her hamster, she told me to stop telling her all the times about her hamster proper care it's all fine but then after I arrived at her house her hamster is so sick in an inadequate cage so I scold at her " how did you take care of your hamster?! poor baby! This is why I won't able you to buy guinea pigs!!" and she told me " I'm broke, if you want me to get a better proper care you can just literally donate me some items and also! It's my life aren't yours" and I said " Well it was your life? then what about your hamster's life you want him to suffer how you suffer with your parents?! That never solved the little one lives, you never fed it anyways even your parents told you to give it to me!" and she said " Okay then if you want all of that solved? you want me to dead telling my parents to buy it!?" she has a good grammar i recorded her voices and also she told me she was broke but she want to buy a guinea pigs?...

I'm lucky enough that I can offer my hamster an entire room to run around loose 24/7. My house is a ranch originally built in the 1950's, with hardwood floors. I keep my hamster in a spare bedroom, which I use as a storage room. I block the doorway of the room with a 1 ft high wood board. My hamster has a Savic Hamster Heaven Metro cage, which I always leave open. I keep the wheel and the flying saucer in the cage. Hamster always returns to the cage by dawn. She also returns to the cage to use the bathroom, so my floors stay clean. I do not provide much for enrichment, though. In the past, I've placed toys and boxes throughout the room, but my hamster never explores them. They are just obstacles she avoids. Running around the room and hiding under the futon is apparently plenty of fun. So, if you have enough space that you can give your hamster their own room, or if you can block off a section of room, I highly recommend it. My hamster is always in a good mood and very happy, and never displays any stereotypical behavior.

My hamsters has levels basically he has a ground level and a higher level in his cage he has stairs to get up to the higher level but instead chooses to climb up to the second level. Would this be classed as monkey barring?
