A lot of FCs seem to have an "inner circle" of a couple of people that have known each other for years, and don't really care much about anyone outside of it.

The problem with FCs is the honeymoon phase wears off really fast. They act super friendly at first and then they totally forget who you are shortly after.

That's pretty common problem not only in FC's but also with people you meet in the game in general. For example you meet some "friendly" players in dungeons and they add you to their friend list and then guess what? They will never talk to you again... -_-

It's true that there are a ton of FCs in the game but 90% are really tiny groups of friends. It's incredibly hard to become part of their circle. I want a large community (100+ people) of very active and talkative players. The thing is that the average age of FFXIV players seems quite high. A lot of people have full time jobs, families, pets, other obligations meaning the whole nolife culture from our teenage years is kinda gone. I miss that.

I’m starting to kinda go through that and I even say hi to everyone…. also the ones that did say hi before aren’t now.
The "Feeling Left Out" part of the video is actually great social advice in general, including irl. Honestly I've come to accept over the years that taking too many steps towards building those social bridges is just not who I am, and I focus pretty much exclusively on a small group of really good friends for my social needs. But now I know that that's okay because it's what I want, honestly. I used to feel a bit bad for not going to a lot of parties and not noticing a lot of... social life around me, I guess. But eventually I realized what Zepla says here - this stuff isn't handed to you in a silver platter. So I put in the work exclusively for the people that I really, really like. I even made a Discord exclusively for us even though some of these people barely play much of anything. And I've been maintaining it with them and it's one of the best decisions I've made in regards to my social life. We talk weekly, we play games occasionally, join video calls to do and say whatever. Then when it comes to meeting new people and going to parties with no one I really know... I'm just like eh. Probably not. Too many of those parties have already gone by where I felt bored or uncomfortable for the vast majority of it. So I've learned that those are not for me and I'll just cherish my closest friends. In FF XIV, occasionally I'll send messages to people, like if they have a name that references something I like, or if I like how they look, or honestly if I just need help. I chat for a short while and then leave it to them to message me back later if they want to. Anything more than that honestly sounds like too much work to me lol
i've honestly contemplated leaving mine when the leader switched my role to betrayal just bc i didn't notice something in the chat bc i was in the state of mourning a childhood friend who had recently passed away. the leader apologised to me but i have yet to be moved from that betrayal status thing. like i'm sorry but it rubbed me the wrong way. i just haven't left it yet for god knows whatever reason. i probably should. this video was a reminder for me to do so. thank you.

@@Sky-de7oy yeah, that just sounds extremely controlling.
I remember leaving mine because no matter what we did be it events, mount and map farms, raid teaching or even just general chatter. There was only a maximum like 3 people outside of the leadership team which even half of them wouldn't show up, who would actually participate. I essentially left cause there was no feeling of community at all
So much of this advice goes for any online community, not just FCs.
After going though so many bad situations with terrible FCs and toxic people, I ended up meeting my best friend in a random Suzaku farm party I had pushed myself to join. And I've never been happier to be honest. People don't realize that even though this is just a game, the way you treat people has a massive impact on their mental state. And it really makes you wonder what must be going on in peoples' heads to treat others so badly. Nevertheless, my best friend and I started building a community of good people. People who enjoy the company of others and doing fun stuff together. And over the months we've been going strong. Thanks to the community finder, we've made friends with 16 new people in the past few days. And you actually showed our community name "Late Night Friendos" in the video! The Major General is our mascot, hence the massive shark picture xD Loved the video as usual, Zepla. Keep up the great work ♥

Although inspiring your post nevertheless brought a tear in my eye. Mainly because i'm kind of going trough a fase like this in the game atm. I used to have a group like this when i played WoW way back then and we even became irl friends and had bbq togheter. The anonimity online often makes people forget that they are talking to fellow human beings and they very often show there worst side. Also a lot of players like myself can play a game to escape their irl troubles even if it is just for a few hours, so this behaviour can really be detrimental for us. During my time in WoW i made friends with several players that declined doing some activities togheter, like long raids, because in fact irl they were terminal cancer patients for whom such activities are too tiring. So they were mostly socials. So yeah you never know what can hide behind that cheerfull dancing lalla you see in the game.
one i was in was pretty much a horde of inactives that in some cases had not logged in for over 2 expansions, the ones active were a mix of silent ghost like members and a small group of officers who only ever did stuff with each other yet always promised to do stuff for new recruits...but that never happened...just wasnt worth putting effort in anymore.

Good day whenever zepla uploads videos! ❤️
I Don’t get into +100 people FCs cause most of the time (in my experience) only like 20 or 30 are active at a time. And even then nobody talks, maybe that’s the main problem with FCs, nobody talks.
This is actually a great video and being a older player i can very much say that you will have to build up the courage to either talk to others or leave. With experience of past FCs that did "talk" they did not listen and became toxic which has made me leave along with others.
You forgot one thing. If none of the FCs you looked into had what you are looking for MAKE ONE YOURSELF. Especially if you have friends.
Those apply pretty well to relationships too XD
Brilliant, thank you! And very timely too actually... I'll check out the community finder no later than today :-)

This. Also fits for new "friends". If friends banter it can be fine. If new guy banters it's just being asshole. I had someone banter me in-game, "joked" about my char. I felt really bad and didn't talk to the person for week because I thought they were like that all the time.

That's not something you do with everyone. There needs to be trust and friendship, so that the other one can assume it was not meant as an insult. And that takes time. So if someone does it immediately, it's more likely that it's in fact a sign of toxicity.

yikes this is gonna hit home, ive been thinking about it lately
Professor Zepla, this was a very good breakdown of FCs. You really sound like a counselor or teacher lol.
I just switched FCs myself recently, many of the things you mentioned in this video were felt. Though i suppose the patch transitions do affect activity after all. But then i mainly left because i met new people that had fun without just worrying about the next thing to farm, but just sitting around and role playing sometimes. That just hooked me up.
A friend sent me the point about reviving it. I for one want to revive it and they agree with my points but idk how to go about it. How do I do this?
These same problems i try to avoid in any games with Guilds/FCs/Clans/Etc. Which is why i set requirement bars low when i run them even on AFK arena- so that people can feel free to come and go, or be active at their own pace w/o even being required to mandatory donate. Even though every bit of support from other members help, i try not to overencumber people with requirements. And this can even be reflected as such on games i play like clash of clans, idle goddess, etc. In part cause i don't like how toxic i get when i get super competitive about things but also because i try to be considerate of others as i don't know what life is like outside of the games... I would sooner shoulder burdens alone, so they don't feel demanded a lot of. Granted i am a bit of an introvert.

Hi Zepla! Just started and found your channel really useful. If you don't mind me asking, are you from Louisiana at all? Your accent is very distinctive. Sounds like its from the Acadiana region
Lovely video, very rational and down-to-earth advice :)
I have been a part of a few FCs and outside of 1 where I was a part of for a while, I feel I was wasting my time being in them because I lean toward more of the casual FF XIV player in that I mainly just do the main stuff like the MSQ, raids, trials etc and none of the side stuff like crafting and housing since that is not really my thing. I am sure there are a lot of good FCs out there and there might be one that would suit my play style but I just rather be a lone wolf at the end of the day.
One of my members gave me like 4M Gil just cuz I said I wanted a house in our discord 😂😂😂 but there were no available at that point 😭😂😂
Throughout my five years of playing, I've only been in two FCs. I left my first one (which I think merged with another one so they don't exist anymore?) around patch 3.3 and joined the one I'm currently in immediately afterwards and like. Weirdly enough I've never really felt the urge to leave it? Maybe it's because I've been part of it for four years now and even if it's quiet sometimes I feel like I owe a lot to the people there. The primary rule is just "Don't be an asshole" simply because members are from various walks of life. Maybe I was just lucky.

Also know when there's people that won't understand your humor or how you socialice, if that doesn't click with you, maybe decide to keep looking for another group! Best way is to look through social websites, circles or content groups - or reach out to players you've made friends with

Indeed! It's fatigueing my fingers trying to type on the controller, eventually I just give up and use simple emotes. Minimized replays of higher level dungeons for that reason too; hard for me to state a request to go slow because I'm unfamiliar with the dungeon's designs and enemies.
Your videos are seriously THE MOST helpful on KZread!
i was in one for 2 years.... msot of the time i stayed becasue i felt guilty abou leaving and wehen saying i didn't appreciate the jokes made about me i was told " We joke about everyone here it's fine" eventually i managed to leave and felt so abd about leaving the few friends i got that was still there.
There were too many lurkers and quiet people in mine. Only like two dozen people spoke despite the 200+ members
I'm finding it hard to be part of much of the social experience due to my constant shifting work hours, So I'm in a situation of I wanna be more social but have a hard to being it xD

Hi Zepla 😄
Huh I've never been this early to a new video. Cool.
i been solo since 2.0, and still did everything.
What's that top she's wearing? I like it!
I'm 30 seconds in but if this video doesn't include "Forbids you from seeking/accepting outside help." then Zepla isn't on Aether and missed that entire debacle.

@Tim Clark not sure if calling them out is kosher but if you google "ffxiv + cult + academy" odds are it'll be the first result.
