I wanna know! Where do you excel with game dev, and what do you think matters most in the process, when it comes to the skills needed most. I can't wait to see what you guys have to say!

I love learning, problem solving and being creative but I have lots of ideas so I lose focus easily and I end up with with lots of unfinished projects.

Thanks for the video. I'm just starting out with Game Dev, I've only made 2 games to any kind of completion yet, and plan to keep on making games and learning. At the moment I am trying to do as much of it myself as I can (art, sound, design and coding) and can only do it when I have time, sometimes less than an hour a day, but I can already recognise that all of the points you raise are essential for getting to the dream, even for getting to the point I'm at with my own learning. I only noticed your content the other day, but I have found that what I have seen so far reinforces my own experiences.

Glad you’re here! I’ve definitely found it encouraging to hear about others’ journeys. It’s exciting that you’re able to prioritize the time that you do have to work on games. That’s the key.

Another great video! Also a nice confidence boost for this solo dev as I have those 5 things going for me! One big additional sign that I don't have and think belongs on the list is 'Good at marketing.' In making my solo dev game (RoadHouse Manager) if come to appreciate how important marketing is. In fact, marketing is almost equally important to how good you are at making games, design, coding or art or whatever else. If you are new to making games but already have a social huge media presence for example, that can be a massive boost to your odds of success; or even if you just have a natural knack for marketing or sales.

This is so true. I’ve heard this from multiple solo devs and I’ve experienced it myself. We don’t always think about marketing the game while we’re making the game, but it’s a huge part of finding success. Thanks for sharing! Glad you’re here!

I have a very high willingness to learn and fine-good creativity in character design and making interesting game mechanics. Am just waiting for AI voice technology to advance to the level where I can prompt the AI to generate a voice that has certain features that are written in the prompt and in quotation marks to put what that AI should say with the generated voice.

Thanks, this is a great and encouraging video!! I think a 6th one is: The ability to avoid distractions; due to all of the things around us that could distract. Staying focused on the task at hand is something else that could a person become successful.

Problem Solving comes in many forms. Find your method for solving them. I like to use Photoshop (or whatever you like) and draw out the problem. It helps me to see the parts of the problem I didn't think about and identify what I need (variables, assets, etc.) to create the system.

I like solving problems. A lot, actually. I dislike that my brain can’t hold onto stuff for long and I keep forgetting things, causing me to be tunnel visioned on what I think the problem is, yet unable to see what it really is, and then spend 30 mins to several hours on the same damn problem. I still get no where, potentially, but sometimes I do finally figure out the bug. But it’s infuriating that I can’t even see what’s actually there. I only see what my mind thinks is there. ADHD is a b*tch I swear😂💀

Great question. I think it holds a lot of value for concepting, but should never be used for final products. It can be a great tool but isn’t ever a substitute for real art.

@@SoulEngineDev I feel like that's the take that most people have, but a vocal minority wants to shame anyone who uses gen AI images, even for social media posts and memes. My take is, AI is not going away. Corporations are going to use it regardless. Shaming indie devs from not using it, only holds back our potential to do more. I see gen AI as a tool, like Photoshop. We can either integrate with the new tech, or get left behind.

@@RealCoachMustafa Generative AI is proven to be theft by the very models they're trained on. Yes, you should be ashamed of stealing. There's a reason the companies that made these supposedly ground breaking AI tools aren't making any money and are being sued at every turn.
