5 Signs You Have ADHD, Not Laziness

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (or ADHD, for short) is a condition that affects your focus. It can make focusing on everyday tasks and routines challenging. For years, people with ADHD were labeled as lazy, procrastinators, flaky, or irresponsible. These labels only produced shame and prevent those with ADHD from seeking help. To help reduce the stigma, we made this video!
Disclaimer: This video is for educational purposes and not intended for self-diagnosis. If you believe that any of the points apply to you, please visit a therapist for a proper diagnosis.
Reminder: Do not let these labels prevent you from seeking treatment. Remember that these labels, whether they plagued you in the past or follow you in the present, do not represent who you are. You are more than that. So, if you ever need help, please reach out to a medical health professional for assistance.

I wish self diagnosis wasnt so stigmatized. Ive always compared it too just because a doctor hasnt said a legs broken doesnt mean it isnt broken and im aware of it. Same goes for mental states. Just cuz a doctor hasnt told me i have adhd doesnt mean im not positive i have it. Also theres a surplus of self research tools available. (Not to mention some people cant afford diagnosis)

Here’s a big difference between ADHD and laziness: If you were lazy you’d be having fun. Often people with ADHD feel guilty for not starting tasks but just… can’t and feel like they actually are lazy. The things many say to ADHD people are the things they may say to themselves.

I have ADHD and all my teachers thought I was stupid. When I scored in the top 90% for the state standardized tests my teacher had a look of shock when he told me my score. It’s really sad that there are so many students getting bad scores and suffering from low self esteem bc they don’t thrive in factory school settings & teachers don’t make the extra effort to help them. So Much untapped potential that these kids don’t even know they have. Our public schools are failing students.

I went to a doctor and they told me I'm just stressed. Went to another doctor then they told me I wasn't getting enough sleep. Then I went to a doctor who is outside of my area and I suddenly got diagnosed with ADHD, OCD and autism and got a detailed explanation as to why things are happening the way they are. These type of videos help you see the problem, but not all doctors will help you target it.

For everyone who watches this and comes to the conclusion they DON'T have ADHD: You are not necessarily LAZY! I know the title implies it is either one or the other, but it's not! There are lots of things that can cause you to struggle. There is also, for example, executive function disorder. Or it is perfectly possible, that you don't have a (biological) disorder and are struggling for other reasons. Procrastination and lack of focus is an issue LOTS of people have problems with and it does NOT mean laziness! You are not alone. You are not lazy. But if you want to improve the first step is to try to understand yourself. I recommend the book "Procrastination" by Burka&Yuen

@@_rouella.kamuii_ Again you create this dichotomy between mental illness and laziness. It's not necessarily one or the other. Lots of social and personality issues can lead to procrastination. For example, if your parents have high expectations you might procrastinate because you are afraid to do your best and still disappoint. Then you prefer to do nothing, because at least then you can tell yourself you could have done it if you tried. Or you are a perfectionist who is always looking for the perfect way to do something, then you despair because you can't find a perfect solution, and then do nothing. There are even people (often women) who are afraid of being stigmatized if they achieve too much, so they slack off. These are just some of many examples that can lead to someone *appearing* lazy. Assuming that they are either sick or lazy just puts those people under more pressure, making the issue worse!

  • @vimonarchiv7433
    @vimonarchiv74332 жыл бұрын

Imagine arguing with yourself in the shower, but instead of being consistent and concise on one topic. You're jumping from one issue to another like you're about to address every world problem on a list in 2 minutes just because one problem after another was even remotely relevant to the next. That is what it is like having ADHD. Its not hard getting us focused on something, the hard part is keeping us focused. Think of it as being free spirited by nature and hard to keep bound by rules, plans, etc. We do like having things that keep us busy, but we don't like being necessarily organized with it, even if it helps us. The best way I can describe this type of mentality is by calling it a "freelancer" mindset.

I haven't been diagnosed with ADHD or something though, I feel like if I start talking to my mother about this and suggest I may have it (judging by your explanation) she'll probably pretty much just wave it off as me making up stuff that I don't have, etc (when I went from saying that I have a fear of spiders to I have arachnophobia she was like "you're making yourself think stuff like this about you blah blah" and this was YEARS ago and yet it still stuck with me all this time even though my memory is very shit and I rarely remember stuff). "Leaving thing unfinished". I'm a programmer, I'm currently doing a commission and it's literally so impossible for me to focus. I have no interest whatsoever in the task, so I left it for days, weeks. However, when I think of a project of my own, I tend to focus on it intensely. To the point where I finished 3 projects within a week, instead of doing my job, ADHD sucks. Edit: I didn't expect that many likes, also, the situation has improved, I actually have 4 out of 6 things completed now and things are looking good!

*As someone who is diagnosed with ADHD, its not entirely a bad thing to have.* *ADHD is heavily overpowered when it comes to survival instincts like detection-and-react based or noticing small details of your surroundings without paying attention like a fuckin' one eye-all seeing. If u can Multi-task, then you'd probably like to rush things through, and keep urself active instead of focusing on one thing. Cause its probably not your thing. Not a good habit, but its pretty damn impressive to pull it off. But not everyone can do that, they'll focus on one thing then completely ignores the rest.*

Here are some memory tips for my fellow ADHD people: 1. Set an alarm 2. Wright on your hand (might cause ink poison if you do it too much tho lol) 3. Hair ties or rubber bands around your fingers (if you only put it on your wrist you would just forget about it) 4. Post-it notes on every wall in your house (Haven't tried it yet so might not work) You're welcome :) Edit: Omg thank you all so much for all these likes, I've never gotten so many before! Edit 2: MORE LIKES?!?!?!? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH- Also for some reason I'm able to remember things that I consider important, like passwords. I feel like I lack an overall “identity” about my interests and the things I like to do and stuff…because it’s always changing. I don’t even know what I like to do. I might be really passionate about something for a couple days, then i have zero interest in it. My feelings about everything are always changing. That’s why I have trouble answering questions about myself or talking about myself, because I’m always doing “micro projects” that I get really into for a short amount of time before I abandon it or forget I was even doing it. Whenever I get asked questions about myself I always have this “woah” moment where I realize I don’t know who the hell i am. I mean I’m in good health, I take care of myself, I have a good job, etc…but I have a lot of trouble talking about myself because I don’t really have any good answers to anything because I’m always all over the place.

I have social anxiety as well so sometimes when a conversation continues for too long on too complex of a subject, or without me being super engaged, or if someone is arguing with me and i feel too overwhelmed, my brain will just forget everything that just happened: what we were talking about, what my defense/argument was, what words are, everything. the worst part is if it's during an argument, I have to start then asking or begging the person to tell me what they mean by the very simple thing they just said, or what we were talking about, and it just makes them angrier because they think i'm trying to play stupid to back out of the argument and they yell at me more when i don't know whats happening and am scared and confused because my brain just decided to check out momentarily. good times 😐

Noo don’t say that, I know it’s difficult and hurting but you can go and see professionals and talk about your problems, and yeahh you’re not alone, definitely not, I send you love ❤️✨

These videos aren’t meant to make you hate yourself! They’re meant to educate, and possibly point you to ask a professional whether you have the disorders they talk about. I highly recommend getting a professional testing on whether you have ADHD or not, because undiagnosed ADHD can be a detriment to your success.

also thanks a lot for the other comments, even before watching this video I already hate myself. I don't have anyone everytime I'll have serious stress and anxiety kick in, even when I had a serious depression all I just did was let it pass by, everything is going so bad because of me and I know that I'm self conscious, so it means a lot even it's from strangers seeing encouraging words for me. I'll try my best to control this by myself, thanks a lot to everyone again

I do relate a lot of stuff from these but I’m not gonna consider myself as a person with adhd but I gotta be honest, it sort of helps me get through whenever I get sad or be in tough situations, it’s somewhat of a curse and blessing for me.

I’ve been told me whole life that I’m just lazy, not organized and irresponsible. I still get called these. But after my high school tutor told me I may have adhd I told my mom, who just called me lazy and even took me out of therapy. I haven’t been diagnosed yet but I do have ALL the symptoms or signs of adhd. I know most of you don’t care about this but whatever Edit: guess who got their mom to make an appointment to get properly diagnosed after a mental breakdown

Hey, we are here and we care. At least I do and I'm sure there are others. I am sorry that you are treated like that. No matter if you have ad(h)d or not (undiagnosed or not), nobody should be treated like that. Rarely anybody is actually lazy (because it's against human nature). And if something doesn't work or go the way you hoped than that always has a reason. We don't always know why we just can't seem to do something, but nobody should be shamed for it. It is not your fault. It's not your fault you can't focus. It's not your fault you can't start. It's not your fault you forget things. And it is definitly not your fault that other think they know you better than you do and try to force that on you. I am sorry for your situation. But my advice is to stay close to yourself and close to those who support you for doing so. Good luck and we care!

I recommend you should get your mom to give you a proper diagnosis cause I'm pretty sure it would show up on like ID or something idk and then if you go to school or something the staff would be like "oh ok this kid has adhd" so it would be easier for them to help you or something ( I just reloaded the page and found more comments sorry )

I was diagnosed with ADHD a long time ago, and yeah, this video is pretty accurate to my experience, when I get into a game, I hyperfocus on it so hard that other games just leave me feel burnt out and I eventually have to go back to the game I'm hyperfocused on, or when I'm doing my job which I love I'll put my music on and let my body go into autopilot stocking and organizing the cooler (one of my favorite activities there is actually organizing the entire cooler while vibing to music) and when I talk to someone or type messages, any videos I have playing will be paused, otherwise my attention will drift back to what I'm watching, oh, and I also can't really play single player games without background noise going, lest I start growing bored, unless it's a game I am heavily into, then and only then is the background noise not needed, so yeah, I do have ADHD, diagnosed in a time of my life before my first long term memory, and I may be a lil OCD too with how neatly I have to organise the cooler
