Nice review. Just FYI, the original design of Shadowdark under the OGL had Race instead of Ancestry. That appears to have been changed when Shadowdark changed license from OGL to the SRD. Other changes include Cleric to Priest, spell Concentration to Focus, and monster HD to LV.

Thank you. Yes, for many all it takes is the changing of a few terms and OGL and even CC are not needed. WotC has already lost control of game mechanics and a majority of their terms are common usage anyway.

Oh Scott will never respond to my videos. He blocked me on his channel because he could never defeat my points with logic. He literally blocked me because I called him delusional when he would not admit that January was not a Spring month. I understand based on his own timeline and statements on his videos the experience he suffered as a child trying to play D&D in the early 80s. 1. He claimed that he first played D&D in 1982, when he was 12 years old. 2. He claimed that he had his books swatted from his hands (bullied). 3. He claimed that he became a Christian at 15, which would have been 1985. 4. He claims to be an Evangelical. So, he supposedly joined the religion and church that lead the Satanic Panic from 1983 - 1986. I’m pretty sure his family did not allow him to play D&D. He joined those who said “D&D Begone”! He carries that resentment for the OSR, as he likely never played D&D again until we’ll into his adulthood and probably not until 5E.

I wonder if you were making reference to J. Scott Garibay’s criticism about the “atrocious” art of the OSR/ShadowDark. I and others have tried to explain to the guy the concept of niche markets to explain the design decisions, but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

He has not matured from when he was 12. I remember growing up, under age 12, I would never watch b&w movies because they were “old”. Then I finally began watching movies like Noferatu, Angels with Dirty Faces, and many others and realized that color does not equal better.

I found 5e to be ruled, dictated and WOTC greed ridden from the beginning and was glad when I found Scarlet Heroes added D100 Dungeon. Now I backed Shadowdark because I see it fitting my ttrpg far better than anyother system could or did. With my homebrew add ons I love D100 Dungeon!

I'm not sure where all of this is headed. Part of me thinks that recent WotC behavior may split the large 5e base and get them exploring new systems, but the more cynical side of me thinks that the average consoomer may just drink the WotC slurpee and continue using D&D Beyond and and the VTT. I'm not really an OSR guy but it would be great if things like Shadowdark got more players looking at different games. There are so many systems outside of the larger D&D umbrella (including OSR projects in that umbrella) that I wish people would simply give a chance.

Too bad Five Torches Deep doesn’t get this much attention. I found that to be a good bridge for 5e to OSR

I still do not understand the hype with this game. It brings nothing new to the table, and the best ideas are found in ICRPG and Black Hack 2e, two much better games. You can easily do everything SD does in any OSR; this feels like an instance of wanting a book to codify these things into a single source to make them "official" vice house rules.

As I said in my video, exactly that. It is a matter of timing, a compilation of game systems, presentation of the materials and the impression that this RPG will be a better bridge than what others have attempted. Its completion: Pathfinder 2E (hard pass). Kobold Press’s Project Black Flag is nothing more than a 5E home brew (hard pass).

It's definitely right time right place. I don't think this will make any waves on release. It sort of propped up artificially from an aggressive marketting campaign which makes me wonder, whose funding it all? I see KZread ads, insta, twitter, news feed... It's only gotten more aggressive as the ks continued which makes me wonder where all this money for the project is coming from or what money are they using/going to use to pay for all of it.

@@DM_Bluddworth I am tracking what you, and others, have said, but you are throwing money at a problem that is easily solved outside of new thing/shiny thing. The quick start guide is just a mediocre copy paste of good ideas from better systems into a new thing syndrome. 5e players are not going to abandon 5e in any significant numbers, and most of the drama queen influencers are back riding wotc. WotC didn't abandon anyone, people abandoned them. And you are aware that I am faaaaaaar from a fan of 5e, but I am realistic. This game is forgotten in less than a year.

@@TheSantaman101 the 10,000 backers @ roughly $109 per pledge accounts for the $1.1 million the Kickstarter raised. I’m not sure where there is any question on where the money is coming from?

Yes, a year from now this game and many others may be forgotten. Also a year from now 5E will no longer get any support from WotC. I don’t see many to follow to VTT to pay $30 per month just to have a live DM or to run a game as a live DM.

Not my cup of tea because it's extremely stat based. I much prefer games like Warlock! where there's only two stats and you build characters through skills. But horses for courses. I think some of the hype around this product has to do with building up social credits and part of it is 5e players trying to find a home after the WOTC dumpster fire.

at least Dungeon Craft admitted to failing to disclose his connections in his initial review. Why this game is getting buzz is because everyone thinks they will get to sleep with the eGirl that made it and had paypigs boost the KS to make it look interesting. Castles and Crusades, Hyperborea, BFRP, OSRIC, OSE, how many clones can you play? how many clones will people waste money on? dont you own original copies of every version of DND already?

Yes I own every edition of D&D from OD&D thru to 4E. I gave my 5E core books to my niece. I will either sell my 3E and 4E or eventually give those to her as well. I’m keeping D&D 3.5 as part of my collection. I don’t have OSE

@@DM_Bluddworth you might be the only OSR person without OSE then, as most have both it and Basic for some reason. Dont give her 4e. i know she deserves punishment for taking you to the DND movie, but that is cruel and unusaul punishment. 😜

Hilarious to see all the youtube lemmings shilling for what's just another set of house rules. I have zero interest in this game, but if it drives people away from the atrocity that is 5e, it's all for the better.
