5 Secrets of AMAZING Glow Effects for Warhammer
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this tutorial we will look at how to paint Glow Effects aka Object Source Lighting. OSL might seem quite overwhelming at first, but this guide should make painting any glow effects easier!
Non Metallic Metal and Object Source Lighting are considered 2 of the more difficult miniature painting techniques out there. I have picked Squig Hopper miniature from Warhammer age of simgar Gloomspite Gitz to show exactly how it's done. Even though I am painting OSL on the mushroom, you can absolutely replicate this effect on anything that is supposed to glow. Glowing plasma weapons for Space Marines or Tau Crisis Suit immidiately come to mind - in general there is a lot of glowing stuff in Warhammer 40 000.

The only problem I have is trying to decide which is more magnificent: your painting or your beard. Thanks for the super tutorial!

When I first discovered your channel, I used to save every video to my "warhammer painting" playlist. I stopped doing that a while ago. Now I just go to this channel every time I'm thinking about trying out a new technique or one I haven't used in a while. In my opinion the best painting tutorial channel, with very clear and short instruction videos!

Haha, I am so glad to hear that! Thank you
I've been scared to try OSL - literally...because I feel like I will wreck a well-painted miniature if I mess it up! This guide is really helpful and I see that you did, in fact, paint the miniature and then add the osl effects (I wasn't sure if that was the way to do it or not).

It can be done both ways! as long as you keep enough of parts dark

I've only done it once by pure accident in my initial painting of RedSkull for Marvel Crisis Protocol, I eventually repainted him along with the majority of my core set because I'm such an amateur painter.

I find OSL unnecessary. It looks good for internet posts and dioramas/display pieces. But for the most part it's a complicated detail that often times won't reflect what's actually going on at the table, and when you hold the model in your hands and look at it, it loses much of the illusion.

Yes but it's worth it. I painted a tech priest using your plasma glow guide and it looks fantastic.....in pictures.....at the right distance......
Literally just tried to do glowing blue, your timing is incredible
Litterally just had my first failed attempt of OSL on a goblin from knightmare mini when i saw this uploaded, perfect timing! Great stuff as always zum
I just started painting and rly appreciate your videos. It's super rich, dense and clear. Thanks a lot for what you're doing
Awesome. Always so clear and easy to understand. And yes, I do find OSL difficult. But I’m going to practice now!! Top job cheers!
Love the clear to the point presentation. All very useful descriptions of process. Thank you!
This is exactly the effect I'm going for with my Red Skull and Thor, so this is perfect timing. Thanks a lot!
Straight to the point. Good for watching and pausing between steps. Nice video 10/10
Christ, the lighting looks so realistic I didn’t even notice it at first. Fantastic work!
I love your videos, they are short but still one of the best explanations on KZread. Most videos are over 20 min and after watchen them I feel like I didnt learn anything :D

Comments like these keep me going, keep on improving! 👌
Very instructive and clear. Time and time again I am amazed at the impact OSL can have on the finished result - especially if the figure will be part of a diorama. I will have to give it a try. :)
I loved the bloopers at the end! 😁
This is so well done, I enjoyed watching! I primarily create scale spacecraft replicas, and to represent their varying scales I've started to build figurines to put next to each one. But I am very new to organic miniatures and I've been really binge watching your channel, it's been a lot of good learning.
Great video in my oppinion. I tried osl once or twice, and the results were uclear. I had to explain people that there are another source of light. I can't wait to paint more figures with your instructions. Thank you
Awesome explanation, appreciate the thoroughness of the tutorial.
thanks alot for this tutorial. It helps me very to understand OSL.
As aside....really love the outtakes at the end. Your vids are short and excellently produced. The outtakes remind me that it is really hard work to do even short videos. I actaully recommended this video to a friend, I think you have a new follower ;)

I've only just discovered this channel but it's probably the best I've seen. No beating around the bush, just "Wanna do something? Here's how." Another great video! I'd love to see you do a whole tutorial on these squig riders, including the NMM (I know you have the 5 minute ones, but your NMM on these guys looks so great an in depth would be amazing, and a step by step on yoru OSL).
Seems so easy with this perfect step by step. Need some training before this result . Thanks for sharing. 👍👍

Inverse Square Law of Light could be helpful with something like this. Nice work!
Thank you for this well done OSL introduction. You cover a lot of important points, and still keep it short and on topic. My one piece of criticism is about the mushroom the squigs' right foot is on: it should have noticable light on it! This bugs me in particular since leaving it dark goes against a lot of what you say in this video: it is not that far away from the light source and unobstructed, so there DEFINITELY should be light on it. Similarly, you could have explained in more detail why there is light on the lower end of the horn. If at all, it should be lighted at its tip. Anyway, still a lot of good content in a short amount of time, well done!
Nice vid, you are probably the best out here when it comes to precise and concise explanation. Do you have a teacher background by any chance? :)
Beautiful
Good advice
Plain and simply....thank you. Watching your work as your explaining it really helps it sink in for me. I might not get this right for a few tries, but im more inspired then ever to really give this a try now. Much love man
Hey, awesome video! Just 1 question though: are you really just using 2 paints? And which paints are you using? Thanks!
It's a great video. Could you tell us which vallejo paint you used exactly? There's a milion light-, dark- blue-green cyan and turquoise paints from vallejo out there and I'm completely lost.

@@Zumikito Thanks!
You can always find good old school paint or something with traces of uranium or some other radioactive crap. It will glow and so will you!
OSL is easy if you remember that it's Object Source Light and NOT Object Source Color. Most people paint OSC. You have to understand how color is affected by light. Paint and understand zenithal light with warm and cold colors and then apply the knowledge to a small part of your miniature. Take a black and white photo of your miniature to check your values.
Great video, and lots of good points, BUT for me personally, the real breakthrough in "getting" OSL came from the watching James Wappel do it. The main thing he does differently is to paint the OSL into the miniature from the start, rather than finish painting everything with no OSL and then add the OSL as an after-effect like you are doing. It's hard to get your head around doing, it's a little bit like riding a bike with no guide wheels for the first time, but once you get it it's much easier (and faster, if you care about that sort of thing) imo.
@Zumikito
2 жыл бұрын
The steps you are proposing make sense - start dark and build light source and reflections first and THAN the rest of the mniature. It sounds easier, because you are already starting really dark and you can control brightness of everything else. I think that both approaches can work, it's just a matter of leaving enough dark areas on a miniature so it can really stand out. Thanks for the tip, imma check that vid.
@Swooper86
2 жыл бұрын
@@Zumikito Definitely check out Wappel's channel if you haven't. He does OSL in like every other video, but the one that helped me click is the one where he paints the Splintered Fang Warcry miniature on a lava base. It's not really about painting the OSL first, it's about painting the entire miniature at once, as a whole, rather than focusing on one area at a time. Quite amazing to watch.

I don't think light works like that. If an object is red under white light, it's because it absorbs blue (and green) light. It won't suddenly reflect blue when you shine a blue light on it.

Hehe. Fleshlight.
Glow effects are my least favourite thing in mini painting. If done well they look AMAZING but 95% of the models I see have just been oversprayed to within an inch of their life to the point where there's no definition on anything and they just look like big neon blobs
