You're very right. Have massively enjoyed watching the videos by this couple.
Keep a torque wrench in your rig and check all lug nuts every time before moving out. With tandem axles (and single) you get side load when cornering, over time this can change the tightness of the lugs. This is a very important procedure many neglect then wonder why they have related failure.

I just searched online and saw that vinegar, ammonia, lysol, and pinesol might deter bears. I would try spraying around the bottom portion of the entire rig. Anybody have experience with this?

Great tips!! I added a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) to my fifth wheel for some added peace of mind while going down the road. The monitor is mounted in the cab of my truck and receives tire pressure and temperature via bluetooth and is shown on the display. I did replace my tires this year, but it's nice to know before it happens when a tire is about to fail so it doesn't damage your trailer. If your trailer is anything like mine, I can't really see my trailer tires when I'm going down the road. The cost was about $250 but well worth it in my opinion. Thanks again for the tips! Safe travels!!
Excellent tips David and Jenni. As a former Chevrolet automotive mechanic I truly appreciate your explanation about why consumer warranty service is so bad, and you are 100% correct David!. I was an honest mechanic, so didn't "make the company money" like other mechanics performing brake jobs and tune-up that aren't necessary. This meant I got most of the warranty work, which I performed with the excellence and integrity people expected. I had worked on a water leak under warranty for an elderly couple preparing to travel for the holidays the next day. The warranty repair time was 43 minutes, but I spent four and a half hours (working until mid-night) to the leak. Performing method for water leak testing I was unable to locate the problem. I decided to remove the interior seats, carpet (including trim molding). Using an unapproved method of testing I sprayed water along the under carriage of the vehicle and found the leak. It was along the floor pan seam behind the passenger seat. The approved method for testing water leaks would not have aided in finding a leak such as this one. The couple picked up their repaired vehicle the next morning, and were very grateful for my "beyond the call of duty" efforts is how the wife worded it. She said she cooked all the time asking me if there was anything she could cook for me . I told her peanut butter cookies were my favorite. Though I learned a lot and had great tools to work with at the dealership I only worked there for three years because I couldn't make enough money. I refused to "sell out" as many mechanics do. When the couple returned from their holiday travels the wife stopped by to thank me again replete with a plate of my favorite cookies. The point of my story is that there are good, honest, reputable automotive mechanics out there. The trick is finding one and keeping them for life, or call David!.

Brian Kent I worked for Cummins and I felt bad for people that bought into the purchasing the RV “extended warranty”. The company would always deny our claims and we’d have to explain that to the customer.

Thanks for just being you Brian. I'm proud that my parents raised me to be honest and eager to do a little more to make it right for a customer or individual regardless of the $$$. I chuckled to myself about you asking for peanut butter cookies because I've done the same! I'm known as 'that guy' who always goes above and beyond by my neighbors and at work. Fortunately my line of work isn't about 'getting money from the customer.' I learned how to be handy for myself after getting the run around by companies and their services. One that sticks in my head from way back was a Sears warranty issue..... twice! It was such a scam they didn't even try to hide it. Then Sears went to a credit card that charged a huge amount of interest. I stopped shopping there. Sad to see where they are now.

Look up RV dealer ratings before you buy. Take it where you bought it. Only one outta five dealers are any good We’ve had great service with our extended warranty. Domestic products are low quality but you can get diagnostic help from their customer service.

Mr. Kent, I need to be more like you, rather than just giving them what they paid for. There aren't many mechanic around like yourself, while I won't rip someone off I really should go that extra mile or 10. Just because I get jobs noone else wants to do is never an excuse

@@PatrickBaptist Putting my principles in perspective let me say this;I was young (in my 20's) and idealistic. If I was a mechanic today I can't say for certain if I would continue to go the extra mile for people (I'm 59 now). Thank you for the sentiment though!
This is great info and what makes the internet so awesome! So many of us are able to share and learn from each other, love it!! I'm sharing my new experience with rehabbing a 1993 fleetwood bounder Class C RV which needs lot's of work cheers
We had a problem with our furnace in our toy hauler and like you the repair was gonna take to long and cost to much. So I’m all about saving money and I’m pretty handy so I diagnosed it myself ordered the parts and fixed it myself. Thank you for the video.
Great suggestions, thank you!! Enjoy your videos, keep up the good work AND enjoy your travels! All the best to you in '19!
It's pleasant to hear you talk. Thanks, folks. Happy Thanksgiving.
I'm glad you both took on the challenges of rv'ing gracefully. It's definitely a life changing choice. I work at an rv dealership and there's a lot of customers of ours that rather yell, degrade, and place blame on us for their lack of knowledge. But there's also a lot of customers of ours who faithfully return to us because we truly go above and beyond for our customers. We're primarily a Jayco dealership but also have some Forest River trailers and motor homes. I'm the warranty administrator & service writer in the service department. We unfortunately recently had to result to not doing warranty work on trailers that weren't bought from us because of what you mentioned of dealers not getting fully reimbursed for the work invested. We figured if we already get a full booked schedule 2 months out with our customers work we might as well book it with customers whom chose to invest in a trailer with us, so we're willing to take any loss with the warranty that doesn't get fully paid... it's a curteousy thing to keep our customers happy. We earn a ton of customers this way from recommendations. I've dealt with tons of manufacturers warranties and extended service policies... they all can be a pain at times. Overall, Jayco pays us the most (2 years bumper to bumper as long as it's not maintenance & customer damage)and Forest River (1 year) isn't too bad as long as I provide a lot of pictures. Keystone was absolutely the worst, I probably at the most received $100 ever from warranty coverage. The nice thing about Jayco is they'll allow you to go to a non Jayco dealer repair shop as long as you call them to report it & provide pics/receipts for a claim to be done via the selling dealer. Scheduling can be frustrating I understand but we get situations of all types that can take longer than other jobs, especially when parts are unavailable from the suppliers (that's a curve ball that gets thrown at us constantly). More than anything, these are houses being dropped off on limited parking space on our lot & some people drop off for a handful of issues & some people drop off with 15+ issues, some people pick up immediately & some people won't pick up for multiple weeks, some suppliers will get us parts in 2 days & some suppliers mail out broken parts, etc. We do our best at the end of the day to finish repairs because we want them picked up so we can bring in more work. Great video, I'd love to share it to some of our customers. Happy camping, take care!
After owning an RV for over 10 years my secret is to keep up with all the maintenance that's required and check the different systems frequently. I use a wonderful vehicle maintenance program called Automotive Wolf car maintenance software that I use on my laptop and configured it to not only monitor my RV's maintenance schedule but also all the other little things that are needed to keep an RV in good shape like inspecting the roof for leaks every 6 months. The software also keeps track of all my expenses and trips so I know all the RV parks I've stayed at and whether it's worth returning there. If you really want to save money keep up with the maintenance!
Thanks for sharing! Great content and presentation.
Agree 100% on the warranty. The three times I tried to have warranty work done, I ended up paying out of my own pocket because the warranty company refused the claim (they didn’t like the RV tech I found) or the “authorized” repair shop was booked out a month or more. I fix it when I can or find an RV tech that can fit us in when I can’t fix it.
Really excellent info you gave us. Thanks a ton for sharing with us.
Excellent video! Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us.
Another great video. You guys are good. Thanks for the great info.
My 2018 outback 30' camper with a slide has been at Camping World since September 12 2018 and today is June 6 2019 for warranty work. CRAZY!
Great tips.I'm up north and being bear aware is second nature and excellent advice on trailer tires. I actually had to buy a set of tire chains for my trailer tires due to the harsh conditions on my winter trips but because of clearance issues I will be upgrading the tires to light truck studded winter tires to help prevent trailer slip on banked roads and turns. You guys are awesome.
Thanks for this video. We live in rural New Jersey and have bears regularly on our property. Thanks to this tip, I will NEVER leave a garbage bag or anything food related in the back of my pickup with the tonneau cover closed as now I know it's easy pickins! This video saved us $$$!
Thanks for info. I have replaced the control board on several RVs, easy repair. Anyone that owes an RV needs to be able to complete simple repairs.
Very good tips,ty for sharing.
A good dealer is worth their weight in black tank pellets :-) Our Dometic fridge went out in our Adventurer truck camper and the dealer near our home diagnosed a clogged evaporator coil. He called Dometic and convinced them that it would be cheaper for them to simply ship him a new unit rather than pay the additional hourly rate to disassemble and replace the evaporator so we got a new fridge. We did have to leave it for a week to allow for shipping the new unit but we got a new fridge for $0. Then of course, being a typical RV, the fridge went out again 9 months later with the same problem. Took it to the same dealer but the service manager who helped me the first time was away on vacation but we still got the evaporator replaced for free so we were able to sell the truck camper with everything working :-) We have also replaced all the tires on two of our previous travel trailers before setting out on their first trip. Khumo makes an LT tire made specifically for trailers. It's an 8 ply rated for 60 psi. We traveled over 8000 miles with that rig passing through Utah in July with 118 degrees temps while we were there. The tires never got hot at any point along this trip. I could always lay my hand on them without discomfort
Thanks a lot guys !!!! thinking of doing it myself for the next couple years.
Great and timely video. I'm going to need to replace my trailer tires after my next trip. I've been told that you can have a skid mounted underneath the trailer so that if you have a tire issue, the skid keeps from more damage being done to the tire and underside of your trailer. Also, bear spray is something I have to get before next trip.
I love you guys. The places you show, the great info on everything. Not many people let us in on the secrets you two do. I love that you can have so many pets on the road, seems it would be a hassle for many to accommodate three pets while traveling.
Love that you guys were straight to the point.
Fantastic Information. Thanks for sharing that with us.
I like them . They get straight to the point
Thanks for sharing great tips😁👍
You hit the nail right on the head concerning warranty work (especially on appliances) at dealers! I'm a mobile RV repair company and only do warranty repairs with an inflated mobile service charge and an understanding they will pay all labor that exceeds manufacturer's 'flat rate' payment for the task...which is always low.
Great tips...thanks for sharing!
I had just purchased my own RV and these sites are always educational to watch. Thank you. The last thing I want is to be somewhere and need things that I could have easily purchased ahead of time. Or problems I could just bypass by knowing what’s more dependable. Thank you
Absolutely , on the trailer tires , they put the cheapest tires on at the factory , I upgraded mine ( still new , 500 miles ) to better load range , but they were still trailer tires just the same . I still feel better anyway . Good vid , all your tips were right on !
again, great pointers! thanks
Something simple but definitely worth it especially if you are a weekend warrior, camping when you can, is make a list of things you need/forgot so you can better your next trip. If you boondock, I'd suggest a solar system to recharge your batteries. I have a 100w system and two 100aH batteries. This makes it so we have heat all night every night.
@jimscheltema670
5 жыл бұрын
Dos this mean you use electric heat at night? RV or smaller vehicle/van recommendation?
@Mjansen77
5 жыл бұрын
@@jimscheltema670 Hey Jim, so I dont camp with hookups typically so I am reliant on propane and my batteries. The solar system charges the batteries during the day (so make sure you park your rig where you can get ample sun) and then I use the batteries for lights and part of the heating. My Fridge uses propane and so does my heating, but the thermostat and fan use the batteries. Heat wont kick on without the thermostat so it is necessary to keep them full.
Those are some great tips. Thanks for sharing. We just bought our first RV last week.
While my family and I haven't quite started RVing yet, we have definitely learned to not buy from Camping World. If you're reading this, please don't make the mistake we almost did.

Thanks for video. Great info
I also carry two spares tires on my trips.
We haven't encountered any bears yet!! But we used to do the same thing with our propane tanks....learned quickly it was a rip off. Great advice guys. Great video as always.
I don’t have an RV, but I do enjoy watching your informational videos. Who knows.....maybe one day I might buy one. Thanks for the tips.
Some great tips, David and Jenny. I wasn't fully aware of the warranty process; good to know. Guess, it's time to break out the ol' owner manuals, huh? Oh, yeah, if you need some respite or help with Sweetie, Alice and Butters, Uncle Ray might just be available (let me check my calendar)! Y'all Be Safe!
I love your glasses. I want a pair. They look like great blue blockers.
I heard this from somebody else. When at a campground and you have your black tank open for convenience as it's right next to your trailer do make sure that you close it off and dump it only when you're about to leave. That way you have water in there when you have to do your number two business. The this person was making was to make sure you always have a gallon of to water in the black tank regardless if your black water hose is conveniently in the ground at the campsite. It'll make your life a lot easier because your " stuff" isn't sticking to the black tank inside. Also I know they always tell you to flush the black tank first and that for the most part is correct. But as a safety measure open the gray water tank first for about 5 seconds to make sure the connection is secure. Then close it off in flushing black water tank first followed by the grey water. Because if you go to dump your black water first and you don't have a secure connection you sure would have wished that it was a grey water splashed on you.
Thanks for the tips
You guys are great. Another thing to mention is that the prefilled propane tanks they do not fill them full like when you have them filled yourself. They say this is for shipping purposes. Bottom line is you get less propane for your buck
Great job guys I love your channel! Huge mistake we made with the first of 3 pop ups we had before our new Class C my son and I were in my Ranger driving home from our first trip in the trailer, my wife and our daughters were right behind us. We were about 7 miles from home on a rural road going about 45mph and the trailer came off the ball! My wife was horrified, the trailer slammed into the truck hard. I was able to stop and put the tongue back on the ball and relock it. The propane tank smashed the bumper so hard there was a small dent in it. We were truly lucky. Got home put the trailer away and went to Walmart and bought a lock. Now we always double check everything. Very dumb, very lucky. At least we learned. I’m 56 and retired so looking forward to warm weather and Camping fun, going to Daytona next year for Speedweek. We’re very excited to make the trip but I will be changing the tires before hand. Taking a 1500 mile trip Memorial Day weekend for 2 weeks to see our kids that live in Illinois it’s nice to know we finally have a real trailer. No more shower room trips😳😳👍🏻👍🏻
I go through a lot of propane in the winter for my camper tractor supply is the best I got 2 20lb tanks filled for 21.76 at 2.59 a gallon 8.4 gallons 1 exchange anywhere else would cost that and you only get about 3.5 gallons that was a great point in your video for new rv and full time campers
Sweetie and Alice are everything!!!
awesome, thanks guys! A guy told me just yesterday about that tire issue!! its real, and he called it a china bomb too.
Good tips thanks guys for the money saving tips. I never thought about LT. Tires before on my trailer but it's good to know.

Watch my most recent video on ST vs LT tires, I actually so not recommend LT tires for a trailer, that was just Jenni's grandpa's opinion and I failed to clarify that it was not mine as well.
I am enjoying just watching the dog, I have a Rottie too and he loves going in the camper. I notice you have yours off leash, I find that the only time mine were ever aggressive is when they were either in the truck or tied up, like they were "on duty"! They are the best!!

Excellent little video, and good ideas. Thanks. I really got a kick out of your dog.
We had an extended warranty through Coach Net on our used 36’ diesel pusher, in which we were full timing. It saved us thousands on three major repairs, including a failed fridge. So I would recommend them.
Good information!
Great advice- Thanks!

Nice vid guys. I highly recommend upgrading to 30pound propane tanks. I Was able to go 45 days before needing to refill them through the summer. Fridge runs 24/7 on propane. So ntb. Cheers guys.
nice vid. thanks. love the dog and cat!
Very informative, thanks! My favorite part of the video? The Rottie. Sweetest, smartest, most loyal dogs on the planet...
That is a beautiful Rottie. They are the best! Cute kitty and obviously it loves the rottie also. Great Video, thanks for the advice.
Thanks for help about the bears, Jennie! I knew about the propane exchange
Nice! Thanks for tips
Great video, you guys are Awesome !!!!!
These were good tips. We are looking into getting a camper, so I subscribed to your channel and will check out more of your videos.
The key to the tires is to just buy a decent trailer tire rated for your application as soon as you drive off the lot with garbage new tires. Also in some places it can be hard to find somewhere to refill lp. Exchange is convenient so you pay for it. Your lessons are great thanks for sharing.
Propane tanks have an expiration date stamped on them, after which they can’t be refilled. Two choices......buy new ones at Uhaul (ours also refills tanks), their new tanks have gauges built into them....huge benefit! Then always refill them. Or.....take the expired tanks in and exchange them, but check the replacement tanks to select the ones with the most time left on expiration and then refill them.
One more point on propane exchange. The exchange tanks are only filled to 15 lbs. When you fill your tank, you can fill to 20 lbs.
Thanks for the info and love your Rottie!
Just starting!
Thanks for information
Good stuff. Subscribed.
Thanks great information
Really good video good points
Good job on fixing it yourself! Dealers are a pain!!!
Thank you, and when you fill your propane tank you get a full 20pounds, and only 15pounds when you exchange them
By changing out your 5 gallon propane tanks to 7 gallon tanks you gain a little price break at a lot of places by going over 5 gallons. Also less trips to get refueled. I always leave one tank shut off until the other one is empty then manually change over, that way I never get caught empty and have time to shop for the best price. Just saying . This works for me. Enjoy your travels and thanks for the video.

Get your propane tanks at Costco. They have a fuel gauge on them so you know when to refill the empty one. Or get one of those aftermarket fuel gauges. I leave my tanks in the auto changeover position because I don't like cold showers or meal prep time interrupted by an empty tank.
You guys have cool videos, and I love that dog, she is so sweet

I lived in Bear country in Colorado. One thing that bears don’t like and are afraid of is dogs. If you store up some dog poop and keep with your trash the bears will generally steer clear of the area.

We must have different bears in Montana, because they don’t give a rip about dogs here.
@mushroomflyer6312

Not only are bears not afraid of dogs (much less their dookie), these folks will be in for a rude awakening if they think a truck cap will keep bears out. Bears will work their claws inside the gap of a car's frame and rip the door open if they smell food. I've seen the interior of a panel van shredded just to get to leftover pizza that a teen thought would be OK because it was "just a slice". The bear pried open the rear door, then made its way up & under & over the seats to get to the middle row with that slice laying on the floorboards. Either store your food in a bear proof container, put it in a sack and hang it high, or you'll learn the hard way.

I wouldn’t really call CO bear country. CO only has relatively small, fairly timid black bears. You should still, take precautions, and you do year of the occasional incident, but it’s nothing like dealing with the brown bears in Montana, Yellowstone, etc.
Awesome, thanks!
