Mind blowing harvest Red hot chilli peppers from zero cost chili seeds, can you believe it? My paper plants survived the prolonged drought and I used waste water from the kitchen to revive them. It's time I share my tips for growing red hot chili peppers at home. And you can plant red hit chili peppers in containers if you have little space.
Harvesting chili peppers is a daunting task. It's important to know when to pick peppers.
How to know when to harvest chili/ when are my chilli peppers ripe? There several methods you can use to tell when chili pepper is ready to harvest. PEPPER COLOR: You can know your garden chilli is ready to harvest by looking at the pepper's color. Depending on the variety, chili peppers can ripen to various shades, such as green, yellow, orange, red, or even purple. PEPPER SIZE: Size can also indicate ripeness o your chilli fruits. For certain varieties, peppers may need to reach a specific size before harvesting. MATURITY LEVEL of your chili plant can also show when it’s ready to harvest. For example, my Jalapeno peppers are hotter once they change colour and they look heavy on the plant. Do chilli peppers ripen when they are not ripe? Yes, you can pick chilli peppers when they are still green and they will ripen off the plant.
Gentle pepper removal is crucial to protecting your chili plant and harvesting fruits. Proper Grip is important when harvesting your pepper plants. Hold the pepper stem or fruit to avoid damaging the plant or causing unnecessary stress. Grip or hold close to the base of the stem before harvesting your chili to protect your plant.
Scissors or Pruners for harvesting chili: You can also use scissors or pruners to carefully cut the stem just above the pepper to prevent damage. This method is particularly useful when harvesting larger or stubbornly attached peppers.
Avoiding Plant Damage: Twisting Motion: To minimize stress on the plant, I use a gentle twisting motion while removing the peppers. This helps detach them without causing harm.
In this video, you will also see me supporting the plant: Supporting the plant with one hand while harvesting with the other can help prevent accidental breaking or uprooting.
Harvesting chilli progressively: Harvesting your chilli over time or harvesting chili peppers gradually as they ripen is good. This ensures a continuous supply of fresh peppers and encourages the plant to continue producing. Regularly inspect your plant for ripe peppers, checking underneath leaves and deep within the foliage to spot hidden or partially hidden fruits.
Post-Harvest Handling of chilli peppers: Storage Tips: Remove any damaged or spoiled peppers before storing. Keep peppers dry and cool.
