    @@xxxdroidmonkeyxxx Yeah, that's true, a degree or school won't teach you anything by the practical side unless you try it yourself, at least on engineering that is. But, the problem is, that noone will give you a grant, or give you permission, or even hand you a project on engineering without a degree, if for example A is a genius, he can pretty much literally plan everything - but... he doesn't know the theory part of the roads, if the roads would be stable enough or not, if the angle was decent so cars wouldn't lose their balance while going through, if the pneumatics would go along with the road - that's where the degree comes in, and B has graduated, and has a MSc/BSc Degree, guess which one gets the grant/project/etc.? Cities Skylines is a pretty good game to plan things - you can actually use it to plan a real-life project, but you won't always have the opportunities of the game in real-life, you can't start a city from scratch haha - you won't always have a positive income... etc - let's not get much into detail. For Engineering, a Degree is a must-have, at least a BSc Degree (Most engineers who plan nowadays have to get a MSc Degree). I admire Imperatur's creative decisions / solutions. :)

    Dedicated turning lanes: something I actually learned from another video, but works well. It involves a bit of math, but if you have more lanes going into a intersection than going out, you will be able to have dedicated turning lanes. For example, if you have an intersection with two two-lane roads intersecting, you can use the asymmetric 3 lane road to have a dedicated right turn lane right before the intersection. This can theoretically work for all 4 directions. This can be done with other road types too... The key is to have more lanes coming into the intersection than going straight out. A 3 lane road going to a single lane road will make two turn lanes and 1 straight lane (assuming a two lane two way road intersects). Again, more lanes coming in the intersection than going straight out yields turn lanes. Most people don't think about the fact that just because a road is 4 lanes going in the intersection does not mean that it has to be 4 lanes going out too. It can be expanded back after the intersection if needed, however more lanes isn't always better. Additionally, one way roads are much easier to work with. Either way, dedicated turning lanes will do a lot to alleviate traffic issues. Try different combinations of different size roads going into and leaving the intersection to get a good useable configuration. Unfortunately, the vanilla game still lacks some real life road setups that are in use in many cities, such as center turning lanes and other road types I've seen across America. Yield signs would also be a good improvement.... I'm on console, before anyone starts suggesting mods.

    I've discovered that if you build warehouses and such on a big road (4 lanes or more). Then downgrade the road to a 2 lane, the trucks won't cause a jam when they stop to drop off/pick up from the warehouse or industrial building 👍

    I never knew you could build road over road like that in vanilla game, thanks for the tip. I have one trick myself: I often use fence networks from parklife or industries to control the zonable area. It helps a lot to get rid of awkward zonable space. This way you can have for example a 2x3 area without a random 1x2 sticking out breaking other zonable area. It works with any pathway too, but it takes up more space.

    Xbox one has keyboard and mouse support, just like PC and works wonderfully. Consoles need real mod support though. Truth is that this game does not have good traffic management at all. No yield signs, can't tweak traffic light timings, cannot specify lane directions at intersections without manipulation of road sizes (what biffa calls "lane mathematics") which can be unwieldy at times and does not always work for certain conditions, no center turning lanes options on 4 lane two-way roads, can't tweak speed limits, options for road types somewhat limited, etc... All of this I wouldn't mind if the traffic weren't so finicky and downright cancerous at times in the vanilla (console) versions of the game. This is why, I hate to say, I still prefer simcity 4. It's far more simplistic, sure, but the traffic problems in that game are generally 100% solvable with reasonably little effort. If they're going to make a game with such granular traffic such as cities, then they should have much more granular traffic management capabilities as well. Since that's not a thing, I consider Cities: Skylines vanilla (console) to be a broken game. Stop signs and traffic lights just doesn't cut it. Roundabouts are pretty worthless because traffic is stopping at every intersection regardless, everyone piling into single lanes on multi lane roads, and the list goes on...

    What I do that has greatly reduced traffic for me is, near places with lots of vehicles, a lot of them will be taking a complex route just to turn around. I find that putting in a two way road with a median on both sides of the main road helps shorten the trip and reduces traffic. You could also just make a loop so that people aren’t going across the road and blocking traffic.

    TIL the Edison Lot exploit and Overpass exploit exists. Gonna use that to build my next city. I usually uses the Crosswalk exploit to make a bus stop in the middle of the housing block road (usually the tree-lined road). The length is just 3 units of plain road to prevent the residents to park there. Connect it to the pathway network, and boom, easy access to bus stop for the whole block. Culdesac exploit is good, but i can't built a house at the end of the road, so i never use it. And the Roundabout Brace exploit is already known for at least one or two years. Very good if you want to create roundabout with road sprouting out with unusual angles. Good job as always, Imperatur. Can't wait for you to create a vanilla marina area for one of the commenters.

    Only vanilla road hack that I'd mention is to solve the problem of all the vehicles occupying a single lane within a multi-lane road through the concept of road mathematics (as popularized by KZreadr Biffa), where for every junction that you make within a crowded multi-lane road, you subtract one lane in the road afterwards. For example: - 1. A 3-lane highway leads into a 3-way interchange, where it branches off into 2 roads, the main highway, and a single-lane highway ramp for connecting to another 3-lane highway. To make the traffic use multiple lanes on the 3-lane highway, downgrade the road after where the 1-lane road splits off into a 2-lane highway. (3 lanes for the main highway minus 1 lane for the 1-lane road equals 2 lanes for the highway after the split.) - 2. A 3-lane 2-way road leads into a T-junction. To make the traffic use multiple lanes on each side of this 3-lane 2-way road, change the road segments near the intersection into 3+2 asymmetric roads, with the 3 lanes entering the junction, and 2 lanes leading away from it. --- 2a. Alternatively, if asymmetric roads are unavailable, tiny 1 or 2-lane segments of road somewhere away from the junctions to serve as choke roads to force traffic to use multiple lanes should work nicely. --- 2b. For what road to use for the junction that connects to the bigger road, a 2-lane road will help ensure that traffic will use both lanes for turning in both directions.

    When doing the overpass, have the section of 4 lane going under perpendicular to the overpass, split into 2 one-way 2 lane (or even onramp) roads just before they reach the onramps. So long as you have your on/off ramps correct, it should stop any cross-traffic or left-turns, and that's what you most want to avoid. The more often vehicles have to cross one another, the higher the probability of causing jams at high volume. Generally, for highways into arterials, I use interchanges with no cross-traffic of any kind. For arterials into collectors and collectors into locals, I use roundabouts. For local intersections, I keep them well-spaced apart, and never have 4-way intersections...only "T" intersections. I also use a lot of one-way roads everywhere. I almost never use two-way roads. I also NEVER zone on arterials, collectors, or roundabouts... zoning and services go on locals only People need to quit doing that. With good mass transit and plenty of walkability, everyone should get everywhere quickly and easily. It's expensive, but you'll be making so much money anyway that it won't matter. Even with mods that make things "realistically expensive", it doesn't matter because the city is so prosperous.

    For roundabouts if you want them to use all lanes, you can do a 7 unit curve for each quarter, which will build 2 curved segments each quarter, then have the lanes go from 2 lanes to 3 lanes in each quarter (3 lanes to exit) that way they won't all collect in the same lane and block the roundabout. Can do the same thing with smaller roundabouts if you do each segment manually

    One of the "hacks" I do, although it requires TM:PE, is similar to the controlled lane highway entrances you see in major cities. I have 2 (or sometimes 3) highway ramps merging at a one-way road, but I time the signals so each ramp gets about 3-5 seconds. Helps a lot for industry when trying to deliver cargo to a train terminal or a storage outlet.

    Thanks this is very useful, I play on Xbox and managing traffic without mods is really the hardest thing to do for me mostly on cities with more than 100k. Also I feel very important to plan the city since the beginning with traffic flow in mind or else with no mods having to deal with deaths around the city or garbage problems, trains and busses causing a lot of problems is very hard and I'd say almost impossible to do unless one rebuild most of the city.

    Game breaking for me....subbed!!!

  • @Torthrodhel
    @Torthrodhel2 жыл бұрын

    I like to plonk a perpendicular road down first, where the end of the cul-de-sac should be, so that I can get a building going across. Then, get rid of that road and put the cul-de-sac in instead. It still works. Good way of putting something at the termination point of any road, actually. Just needs a little advance planning that's all (can't do it for zoned buildings of course). Downgrading the size of a big road, or just plain replacing one, can still work with municipal buildings you've attached. If you want some extra space between the road and the buildings, the game allows you a single grid square of difference while still counting it as an access point. Plan this carefully and you can line up the backs of some buildings quite nicely (say if you have some 3x3 crematoriums you'd like to sit nicely next to 4x4 housing without leaving any space at the back, for instance). This can even facilitate a pathway in-between (something as a console player I find especially nice for when I want bus lanes AND cycle paths, or maybe just to put a pretty row of lit-up nature reserve paths in front of a dirt road to mock-up an "advanced" dirt road). Thankyou for the road-over-road thing! I had no idea you could do that! Looks so neat! :D This one's more of a glitch to watch out for than something to do deliberately: when you remove one of the fishing industry ports (that come with their own roads) to replace it with another, it can often break the connecting roads even when it fits them. Just be careful - if you see a weird circle in the middle of one of your roads, then traffic will be thinking of that road as impassable. Fixed by simply replacing the connecting roads (upgrading works too). One trick if you're dealing with some tight space near a map edge is that you can place down a really slim road running along the border, and then upgrade it to a wider road even if that wider road would've been "outside city limits". Not hugely useful but could save some replanning in a pinch. This goes for roads next to sea walls, too (which I like to use as normal walls by flooding an area in order to be allowed to place them, then unflooding it afterwards). You can put a thin road fairly close, and then upgrade it to be much wider, which allows for sometimes even a little bit of clipping under, which can look super neat so long as you're not covering one of the actual lanes. If you plan it well enough to do it the other way around - placing the roads first and then flooding to build the walls, and THEN upgrading them - you can get even closer. Just a little aesthetic tip for those super annoying tile placements that cut off what would otherwise be really nice road corners (but aren't worth wasting one of your nine entire tiles on). A tunnel can look like it goes straight through, at a glance, even though it won't actually be doing that underground. There's another tip I have for consoles, but it's to do with landscaping rather than roads: When landscaping, the brush strength is VERY glitchy. Here's what to watch for. Most of the tools have set strength levels, let's call them 2-4 (weak 2, medium 3, strong 4). But the "smoothing" tool actually uses different values - its strong as equivalent to the medium of the others, for instance. So it's more like weak 1, medium 2, strong 3. So if you want an even more subtle brush on the other three tools, you can achieve that by beginning to landscape using the smoothing tool, using the d-pad to adjust the strength to "weak" while you're doing that, stopping using that tool, and then immediately going to the tool you actually want and using that instead WITHOUT altering its strength. That's how you get a "1-brush" on those three. Much slower! Or, the opposite - to get a "4-brush" on the smoothing tool, first go to another tool (I like to use the "level tool") and start landscaping with it - you don't need to be actually changing anything, you only need to be holding down the button - and adjust it up or down until you make an adjustment to a strong brush while using the tool. Then stop. Then go immediately to the smoothing tool. And there's your "4-brush" on the smoothing tool. SO MUCH FASTER! Saves SO much time. Important: This is also easy to do completely by mistake! That's how I discovered it. I thought, this levelling is going so damn slowly, why's it going so slowly? Should be faster than this at max strength! It's because I'd used a "strong" brush on the smoothing tool first, then gone directly over to the levelling tool. So it still looked "strong" but was only actually having the effect of a medium. At one point while using it I toggled it down a strength and then back up again, and hey presto, glitch fixed, it's fast again! Can sneak up on you if you're not careful, so watch for it. There is also a slightly useless but kinda-funny exploit available. If you landscape to the excessive tune of over 21,400,000 credits (and yes, you do have to have that in the bank to be able to do that!) then the counter malfunctions and switches from "cost" over to "refund" instead. Let go of the button then and you double that money instead of spending it!! So if you're already more pointlessly rich than you should ever need, here's a way to gain arbitrary amounts of extra money, for some reason (lol). This does need you to have "infinite soil" cheat already switched on, so it's gonna invalidate your achievements just like the infinite money cheat would. But... you get to keep the money counter. And... you can actually turn off the "infinite soil" cheat once you're done with it, unlike the "infinite money" cheat which is permanent. So there's that. *shrug*
