Feeling a bit nostalgic. The very first video I watched on this channel was for 5 reasons why you SHOULDN'T back Marvel United: X-Men. At that time I was new to kickstarter and the late pledge for MUX was still open. I ended up making the late pledge and so in that sense, MUX is my very first kickstarter game. Good times. As to the MU system in general, I absolutely love it. It gets to the table probably more than any other game (and I've since backed and received quite a bit of other games as well). But this one remains one of my favorites. It's simple without being brainless. Setup, teardown, and playtime are all lightning quick. And my favorite thing about this game is the sheer variety in the villains and how they play. They all have unique loss conditions, and their unique BAM and overflow effects, as well as their threat cards, all play into this to give them a lot of variety in how they feel while often being thematic as well. And then you can mix and match challenges on top of that (my favorite is the extra sentinel just stomping around, mucking things up). It's not a perfect game by any means. Heroes do feel a bit same-y, exasperated by the action sharing system, which even though is a fun part of the game in its own right, means characters compensate each other's strengths and weaknesses in a way that make them feel less varied. And aside from the villain's often thematic unique loss conditions, the game can feel very abstract, where it can be difficult to visualize the story/action as you play. And finally, at the end of the day, the game DOES belong in the Ultra-Light category. If you're the kind of gamer who exclusively enjoys heavy games, I don't think this one is going to change your mind. Personally, I like having a mix of heavy and light games. But with all of that said, ultimately, I can say that every time this game gets played, everyone has a lot of fun, simple as that. The game plays great three handed solo as well, as it's very easy to manage. Great stuff.

I couldn't agree with you more. And 3 handed solo is my favorite way to play it when I can't recruit my family. Looking forward to trying the new solo variant. I'll probably regret not getting Galactus at some point, but he was basically all I wanted from the campaign, and the big purple guy just wasn't worth $150 to get him.

@@petergross7235 Right! Even though I love the system, I didn't need to watch this video to second guess backing this time. I already own all of MU/MUX; that is plenty, plenty of content! And I don't know these new characters nearly as well, so I think this is a great cutoff point for me. Edit: And Galactus DOES look fun, but so is Days of Future Past, so is Infinity Gauntlet, so is Sinister Six, etc etc. Resist the FOMO. I came into this knowing that I was still going to back this anyway because I have fun with the admittedly light game because it's so easy to play and so easy to teach, which means that it sees a lot of play, especially since the variety of heroes means that everyone has fun picking their heroes each time we play. I do admit that if you're just playing one of the core boxes, it gets a bit boring; it's the villains that really change up the game, but I do think the heroes do actually start to differentiate themselves quite a bit (particularly once you get into the X-Men set). Anyway, I'm also looking forward to painting all these cute little figures (even though I'm still working on the original Marvel United) and glad that some of my favorites that didn't make the first two campaigns appeared here (Glad to see Absorbing Man and Abomination. I'm still hoping The Leader finally makes an appearance in this one). This one's a surefire all-in for me, but I'll wait for that all-in first. I appreciate the effort on trying to convince me otherwise though!

This is one of the best family games we have that hits the table every other night. I think the experience we get with the kids is what makes this game do fun. Teaching them the characters, making up stories. And I can this Galactus for Marvel Zombies. Lol

  • @JAlanRykerGames
    @JAlanRykerGames Жыл бұрын

Galactus is a really good value! No one should be getting this kickstarter without trying the game. It's been regularly on sale for under $20 and can be had normally for under $30. Now, my opinion is skewed because I've been reading marvel comics for over 30 years, but I love this game. The decision space is small, but crucial decisions are made. Are you going to stop the overflows to keep things contained or aggro rush the villain? With some of them one works, with some the other works, others require a balance. Each villain has other things to look out for. This is ONLY the case in hard mode with no wild cards, which is more like medium mode on any other game. I'm accustomed to losing at least the first time to the villains. If you do this, you realize that there is more difference in the heroes than it seems at first. I played Vulture 8 TIMES before beating him. I got to know the failings of many heroes very well, as the mobile guys couldn't do enough damage and the heavies could do the damage but didn't have enough movement to get to him since he knocks you across the board with every bam. Punisher and Howard the Duck, by the way. And while some people will feel like once they've solved the puzzle of each once they can beat them easily each time, it takes me a year to work through all the villains, and I absolutely did not remember the balance required to beat the first by the time I come back around to it. I have a terrible memory which really adds replay value to board games. I definitely agree that the most of the fun of hte heroes is just having the mini and the custom cards, while the real variability comes from the villains. That's why Galactus is such a good value! Sinister 6 from season 1 was $35 and gave you one combined mode and 6 individual villain modes. Best value besides the core. in MUX, for $30, Phoenix Five gave you 5 villains with individual modes and a little campaign that I never play. for $35, Galactus gives you 2 combined modes (one with Galactus, one with just the heralds, and I think you can swap any villain into the one with Galactus, for more variability, though I could be wrong) and 4 individual herald modes, for 6 modes. It would be a good value at $35 with a normal-sized central villain (like Thanos), but then it gives you this honkin' giant sized villain for an extra $5, or the cost of one latte! I literally didn't give Galactus in Marvel Zombies a second thought, zero fomo struggle on my part, but this Galactus I'm getting and feeling confident that it'll be the best value of the campaign aside from the stretch goals. I do love the cosmic Marvel stories the most (the mutants I care for the least), so I am very excited to get these heralds while most people have probably only heard of Silver Surfer. I love the idea of the equipment, but I think it'll make the game too easy, since the equipment replaces a wild card, which I'm accustomed to playing without for a good level of challenge. And yeah, most people with the first 2 don't need a third and no one should play this without trying it from retail. Good video!

So far there aren’t a lot of stretch goals that make me want to jump in on this. I will definitely pick up the Multiverse core box at retail and the Spider-verse box that’s gonna be coming out. I remember watching the Marvel United: X-Men video, hard to believe how much the channel has grown since then. I also can agree with some of your statements about general MU, it is definitely a light system and doesn't have all the "crunch" that a lot of heavy board gamers are probably looking for, it also doesn't vary the Heroes as much as I personally would have liked but that is partly why I am so interested in Multiverse which seems to be doing more on that front. Really tho the reason I am currently backing and plan to go all-in is because the majority of the time I play this game with my family and they LOVE it! My dad is convinced it is the best game he has ever played. I love the whole system for it being so light and simple to teach, being a very easy game to get people into given it's theme, and that with all the characters with (although minor) differences you have endless combinations and anyone can play their favorite. I think that if they ever do more KS for the game, I will probably not be participating, since I think that where I will be after the completion of this one will be more than enough. My family and I have completed at least one fight against every villian in all the boxes except the stretch goal boxes (which we are working through) and it has always been a blast, and at the end of the day more content for a game that I know will be played and loved is always something I am keen on.

I doubt they'll return to Marvel Zombies for a while since they sort of came out with 2 boxes at once, but it did do really well so you never know. You should be able to find Marvel Zombies in retail now or soon though, if you're hoping to pick it up. Whenever backing something on a crowdfunding campaign, you will be charged when the campaign finishes (so whenever that time limit expires). So you can back it and cancel it before then and not be charged. You don't pay for shipping at that time, that will be calculated later (usually when they're getting it organized to ship out), so that's why a lot of people are mindful that the shipping costs can change - personally it's why I try to only back stuff that I'm so excited for if it ends up costing me more than I expected, that's okay because my level of excitement outweighs it.

I agree with your assessment of United - I'm a sucker for the theme, especially given how obscure they go with the characters, but the game is... meh. I could definitely have some fun with it, playing it with friends, but definitely not more than with other co-op games. But like you said, it's simple. Kid friendly. It has its appeal. But this is one for which I can give myself a pat on the back for trying once and then staying away.

  • @VaultBoy13

The obscure characters is what makes this KS more appealing to me. But, the gameplay doesn't hold my interest. The heroes don't stand out as unique, and there's barely any decision space in the game. It likely makes the game very kid-friendly, and I get owning the retail content for family-weight game. But, putting several hundred dollars into a system this light that's going to take up that much shelf space? I don't see the appeal.

This series of games is one of the biggest hits in our household. Do I need more content? Probably not but I will get whatever is Kickstarter exclusive. I have both base sets and a few expansions and really really dig the gameplay. The villains really add to this game and the stretch goal boxes add so many villains, especially this time around. Plus, they have done some very creative things with how the villains play. Thanks for your thoughts and great content like always.

My experience is I skipped the first kickstarter, purchased the core box after the campaign, loved it, purchased an after market Kickstarter pledge with stretch goals, went all in on X-men and purchased everything I missed in the first campaign. I will go all in on this campaign as well because I just love marvel United. I find that lighter games get played more often for me less work to setup and get started and I have passed on much heavier games even if they are great because I know I won’t play them. I also don’t necessarily think this is a kids game per se. I am an adult and I enjoy this game immensely and have over 60 plays of it and I can see getting in 100s of plays more, but again everyone is different and glad you play devils advocate for those that may be on the fence. What you should do is a why you should back and why you shouldn’t back like the devil and angel on the shoulder.

I have and went all-in in X-Men United, as the X-Men Universe and the characters ate my favorite and very happy with what I got there. I didn't back the first because MCU is fun, but I really didn't need a big game of em. And without a doubt I have all I'll ever need with a game like this. Plus there's just so many characters I don't really have that much of an attachment to nostalgia hook me (like X-Men easily did). Plus, like just HOW much of this stuff do you need? While Zombicide faces a similar diminishing returns situation, at least there are different mechanics, much, MUCH more varied miniatures & sculpts and Map tiles to shake things up way more than the Marvel United games offer.

However, I just want to underscore the importance of mentioning location abilities, particular game additions (traitor mechanic in Tales of Asgard etc), and as the video mentioned, the enemy abilities. Reason number 1 rings true for so many games. I know I've been taken in by the fallacy of sunk cost on multiple occasions (Thunderstone Quest and Aeon's End, most notably). It's hard to stop that completionist mentality sometimes, especially if you enjoy a particular game system and feel that some content will be unobtainable outside of crowdfunding.

I agreed that the game is just ok. It's got great potential as a kids game and I've played it once with my 7 yo niece and she was just like - this seems easy. I liked the idea of it a lot, loved the minis, loved painting the retail core set - and thought a quick to play and teach coop would be fantastic. Nobody I know got interested so I sold my prior all ins and have no regrets. The issue with all the SG and the majority of this campaign is that if half the game is the theme - these are the characters people care about the least.

I'm drawn by the mini painting but I didn't go all in on MU X-men nor Multiverse (Marvel Zombies I went all in) I just picked up a few of my must have expansions Phoenix 5, Age of Apocalypse because they were tied to some of my favorite events in the comics. I agree the game is a bit light for all that content. One of the things that draws me to the campaign is painting the minis as a showcase. But I have such limited time, they are mostly looking at me with their grey eyes, and grey bodies taunting me. I did get the core box of MU X-Men done though.

I agree with some of this. I think the game is okay but when playing it with my nephews, it’s so much fun. That said I did end up backing DC Super Heroes United because of Suicide Squad kickstarter exclusive. Frustratingly, the CMON fomo tactics were a long the line of ‘here is a thing! But to get the complete experience you need all of the boxes which each contain 1 part of the thing. Thankfully the suicide squad expansion looked so good, I flat out didn’t want any other expansions (except Arkham which needed to be kickstarted in order to get Mr freeze and then I might as well get Gotham to complete the bat team, and the kickstarter gets me commissioner Gordon, who could be a side kick in the sidekick box expansion, but the decks in the side kick expansions has cards for the green lantern expansion and the metropolis expansion, but if I’m doing metropolis, the JSA is right there and is also kickstarter exclusive ….)

One thing that’s pulling me to this campaign like other people commented here is the sculpt and you want to paint them. But for me with a limited budget it is too much expenses for a so so game and just chasing minis. Also the opportunity to get the previous stretch goal. Maybe when I have extra to spend and wait for a little bit fair price seller. Again thanks for this video and seen a few of your videos before. Keep up the good work 👍 P.S. Theme is there, and from the playtroughs out there, it seems pretty interesting. Will see if I like it or not and if I do, I will pledge for Multiverse, most likely not all-in and depending on VAT and shipping prices. Also, I like the concept of coop games, but so far me and my wife do not seem to enjoy them that much, like Dead of Winter (crossroads one), pandemic, spirit island. I guess we enjoyed more Nemesis, The Crew, Marvel Legendary, but then again, we have not played any of those games in a long time, so I hope Marvel United might be the accesible and the best coop game for us.

I've ignored this Kickstarter for the past couple weeks exactly because of the same reasons you mentioned. I am already nearly all-in on the first 2 campaigns, and I've hardly played it. Half of my boxes aren't even open yet! So I knew I wasn't going to play this, I wasn't excited by the three or four times I did play this, and I don't need more stuff taking up space in storage. But then curiosity hit me, and I visited the Kickstarter campaign. Big mistake! I saw they were adding Equipment cards and Team cards, the latter of which I LOVE since I always try to make a thematic team anyway. I saw lots of new heroes that I've been a fan of in the comics. So I finally said to myself, self, go for it. Maybe you'll never play it. But one day, whether it be a year from now or 10 years from now, you'll have an itch to play a simple Marvel game, and it'll be there waiting for you. And you'll be happy that you (and whoever you play with) will have all these characters to choose from. Congrats, CMON. You managed to rope me in again.

I mean, when you have that itch to play a simple Marvel game 10 years down the line, when a new better game has come out in the meantime, you'll still already own all the unopened boxes that you still won't have opened, now taking up a full Kallax which could be filled with other games you'll actually enjoy and gravitate to before Marvel United. But hey if the concept and idea brings you enough joy, then that's a good reason. But it also may be you hoping the game will be different from what it actually is, and the experience you get from it.

The minis are my favorite part of the game, but the gameplay isn't there for me. It's a superhero game where the heroes don't feel unique or special most of the time. They don't feel super nor larger than life. And, they feel less special than a Pandemic character, which is a pretty big detractor to the theme and fun. I don't need the game to increase in complexity. Death May Die is barely more complex, but it feels more like a superhero game than Marvel. There's so much power fantasy going on in Death May Die with the characters being powerhouses that stomp Elder Gods into goo. A superhero should always be able to do something that's both unique and awesome. It may not be what you actually do on your turn, but the option needs to be here. And, Marvel United misses that fundamental of superheroes by a mile. Love the aesthetic, and I've nearly backed every campaign because I love the toy factor of the minis. But, the cookie-cutter design for heroes leaves me wanting. It looks like a superhero game, but it doesn't play like one.

#2 is spot on. The game is simple. And that's why I love it! Perfect light game for solo and coop. With this game, the bad guys are what make each game feel different from the next. The kickstarter so far, has 17 new baddies. I only have the retail of marvel united + xmen. To me, this is a fantastic way to get a ton of new content for a game my group and I love. Oh, and a cool toy Galactus.

It’s simple yes, but that with any core set and a stretch goal box has so much replayability, I was really only interested in the campaign and team card sets. Needing to buy a core set in order to get that privilege for a bit extra gameplay, made this KS a pass for me.

I went all in on X-men. Mostly due to the theme. I enjoy the simplicity of the game but I agree with you in the fact that I just don’t need more stuff. With that said I think getting the core box with all the stretch goals and gear cards with additional villains is an easy back. I initially backed this at $100 because, you know, Galactis, but I will be lowering my pledge. As a side note, the heroes and some villains in this Multiverse series are all B list heroes. You have to be really into the Marvel universe to know who these people are.

Totally reasonable take. I'm a huge X-Men fan, and I thought the MUX stretch goal box had all the new mechanics, unique feeling heroes, and creative villains that the core boxes lacked. Why waste Wolverine on the same boring "gain additional symbols and draw cards" stuff that Thor had, when obscure characters like Madrox have their own cool, special mechanic? MUX in general was so much better designed and more complicated than Season 1, while still being really quick to play, that I'm excited to see where they take the new season.

I however, also don't have Fomo. I would like 2 of the original expansions but that's it. None of the xmen expansions. I will say I'm backing this. Just the base game and the civil war box. I get what I think is worth the value and what I know I will play. Now, if they came out with a StarWars United...all in. No question lol.

Bought Marvel United (came with Spider-Verse and Doctor Strange through Amazon) and bought Marvel United: X-Men.....neither one through Kickstarter. Paid less than $60 for all of this content. Amazon had the Marvel United with Spider-Verse and Doctor Strange shockingly enough for $25 around Christmas. Yes, totally agree that it's a trimmed down version of Pandemic...probably more parallel to the Star Wars: Clone Wars, Pandemic-inspired game (mitigate the "virus", defeat missions, then defeat big villain). I too looked at MUM, then looked at the stretch goals. Believe me, if I were more of a collector or full-on geek for this stuff, I may have been drawn in. Like you mentioned in #1, I determined that having MU and MUX was enough content. Yes, agreed, all of the heroes are the same with their nuanced special ability cards. It's only the villains who have range. For me, it's just a fun light-weight game that's easy to get to the table, whether solo or multiplayer. In the end, I could not rectify within myself shelling out $100+ for what will be basically another box of figures and cards, along with a scenario that may or may not add anything. While I wasn't a fan of Marvel Champions, I appreciated that at least that use of the IP shows how you can make for some truly diverse playability with the wide range of characters and scenarios. Thanks for this assessment and validating my decision to hold on to my money.

I own none of the MU games or boxes, but I saw a good amount of gameplay and yes, felt it was a bit too light. Which would be fine if it was a smaller and cheaper game! Furthermore, for me, the main draw of playing as super heroes is to make the gamer kinda feel like they are one, as well as ensuring the mechanisms of the game also make them feel like they're unique and reflect the "true" abilities of the character they're playing as. I think Marvel Zombies does a better job at this. All this milking of the IP, the prices are a bit up there for what it is, meh, it's just too much in my opinion. In the end, it's mostly a lot of *bling*... I get the appeal! But this one is not for me. Money well not spent! :D

I would agree if you have nothing, get the Core Marvel United X-Men box ASAP and try it out first ... yet the sameness issues were solved on the hero side, and I expect even more so with equipment. The versatility of styles of play is also very good. The X-Men cards are mostly the same formula. Most of the deck is just cards that are a mix of symbols, and then there's 4 cards with printed text to make the hero unique. So, the majority of the game the heroes don't stand out. They don't capture the larger-than-life feel that superheroes should have. The game is simply too many turns where heroes feel generic. The game's strength is the accessibility and the IP. If you have children that are into Marvel, then the game is probably a blast. The toy-factor also probably helps to sell the game to them.

You say why wasn’t Galactus just a cardboard token. Why shouldn’t all the heroes and villains in the game just be cardboard tokens then? This is CMON we’re talking about. Your point makes no sense. Also if you’re calling the game basic it definitely isn’t for you. You obviously haven’t played against the harder villains on Heroic challenge mode. You said you just play a random card but failed to mention that you’re also passing valuable actions on to the next player. Your bias for not liking the game seeps into all your points. Looking at their past dozens of campaigns, it's pretty easy to get at least a good idea of what they're doing...and adding pennies worth of "stretch goal" content is only worth it if you're selling it.

@@mobileuploads3623 If you don't care about price and just want what you want, then sure, it could cost a million dollars and it would be "worth it" to you. I'm saying that paying hundreds of dollars for SGs and expansions that took very little effort and about $5 to make isn't worth it at a design/component level. Personal evaluations are completely up to the individual.

Love your vids but sincerely disagree about charcters not being much different except for the art. Wolverine heals, Nightcrawler teleports every turn, Rogue can copy other charcter's special powers, Hulk can smash, Nick Fury commands other charcters, Black widow can get information about villain next turn, multiple man splits, Dr Doom wants to be atacked, Spiderman is rewarded for rescuing civilians, Xavier helps others double up on their powers, Agent Bob cowardishly runs away from villains to avoid damage....

@@roberts5647 But, most of the heroes only do that kind of stuff about a third of the time. The majority of the game you're a superhero taking generic actions. It creates a thematic disconnect. To capture the superhero theme, the game should make nearly every turn feel like I'm playing Wolverine. It shouldn't be a situation where I shrug and think, "Wolverine, Hulk, Rogue, Captain Marvel, meh, I could be playing any of them."

I like your content, but for your 2nd point, I think you are kind of off. You seemed to have played the base set of MU mainly, maybe only played the base set of MU, and you say the system is basic, and the heroes are very similar. In the core box of Marvel United (MU), you are 100% right about those points, but the fun, the complexity, the struggle, the puzzle, comes from the expansions. Base MU is like vanilla, it's simple, good/alright, and is a good starting point for other things/flavors. Base MU is simple, but the add-ons, tweaks, "spice" that can be added make it greater than the sum of it's parts. It's like a platform. And like a platform, if you only have the base, you truly don't understand why people like it they way they do. If you just hade a PS5 and the one game that comes with it (Astro Bot), are you really going to like the PS5? Do you really understand what makes it great? Probably not, it sounds that your situation with Marvel United.

Eh, we played a fair amount of expansion stuff, and while there were some surface differences, there wasn't anything that made it interesting. All of the decisions were still super simple. With the platform example, it's closer to an old black and white Pong system. The jai alai "expansion" just made the paddles shorter, but no more interesting. Sure, not the best analogy...but I just don't hear enough about Pong these days!!

Even the thought of backing this insult of a campaign is laughable. Your points are spot on sir, it's mind boggling that anyone would pay more than $25 for a booooring, low effort, kid's game. Also couldn't agree more with your dislike of the scalper scumbags that make up a small but not insignificant part of every CMON FOMO-fest. Stick with ruining concerts for musicians and fans please. I would also add another reason not to back: Don't support the slimy behavior of a garbage company like CMON. No matter how much people complain about them and point out what they're doing...people keep bending over and passing them their wallets between their legs. They have zero reason to stop being dirtbags, and $millions$ of reasons to just keep on fleecing people.

@@DustyLamp Fair point, but doesn't all of the KS exclusive junk effectively amount to a sort of "limited stock" in the end? I agree with you that it doesn't keep somebody from backing their own copy, that is a big difference, making my comparison not the best lol. It does feed a manufactured secondary market scarcity that is part of the CMON business model, which is intentionally manipulative and dishonest. If CMON weren't also profiting off of the resale strategy, I'd be all for it...but it's helping a dirtbag company continue their dirtbag practices.

The more people that back and sell things like this, the lower the price they are secondhand. You should actually be encouraging the people flipping these games to buy more, rather than admonishing their behavior. The high number of flippers actually keeps these products relatively affordable on the secondhand market. Would you care to explain what makes CMON a dirtbag company? I can see if you're upset about the shipping increase that happened with Marvel Zombies. Is it simply that their games have exclusives?
