My stock killer instinct bolts that came with my diesal x are 390 with 100 grain field tip. I'm considering graining up but blew through a bucks shoulder blade at 60 yards with 125 grain grim reeper pro series.... It ended up in the guts after the shoulder blade!

Rich, I enjoyed your video. For those who are having trouble getting larger, fixed blade broadheads to fly well, the first and likely best "tuning" parameter is to increase FOC. This will markedly reduce the tendency to wind-plane, and as an additional benefit, will also help reduce the effect of crosswind. Two very good reasons to experiment with high FOC.

HI Rich, this is a great video with lots of helpful information! I spent a great deal of time on the range, with a chronograph and my scale and gathered a lot of valuable information. I'm still working up a host of new arrow, broadhead combinations for the JACKAL! Can't wait to weigh, test and evaluate my new BLOODSPORT arrows with the 125 Gr RAGE. Still figuring out the FOC but we'll get that fine tuned some time soon as well.

Number 5 = Plan B where just as the arrow is shot at a perfectly aligned animal and it moves. It can save the day.

As we say in the rifle shooting world.... velocity is great, but accuracy is final. I agree with all 5 of your reasons and will be “going heavy” next season!🇺🇸

New to your Channel. Love it. Been hunting with a crossbow since 2003. I have used a red dot scope since then, have you ever shot with one? Zero my scope and Bo at 20 and try not to shoot more than 30. I have a lever on my crossbow that moves the scope up when I move it to 30 yards.Keep up the great work.

I’m now exploring heavier arrows but will wait to see next weeks show to see why I shouldn’t:-)

Ordered my Dagger 390 from Gander so it’s on its way. I got my Ranch here in Mississippi so want to get me some deer hunting areas setup. Got acreage to get practice in and got my a Range laser. Your videos have helped me as a Beginner.

Hey. I've had a Dagger 390 since last year and I may be able to give you a few tips. I know it may be presumptuous of me to post this, but it would have saved me lots of money, time, and frustration if I would have had this information. The key to the Dagger is bolts that are heavier than the stock bolts (325 gr.) and bolts with the shorter, stiff vanes. I use Swacker 100 grain 1.75 in. mechanical broadheads (If you use these broadheads, go ahead and buy an extra pack of bands). I purchased a foam target rated for 400 fps and I often sink bolts up to the vane inside 25 yards. You'll get good shots with bolts that have slightly wrinkled vanes with field points, but when shooting broadheads those vanes have to be perfect. Sometimes my scope (which was stock on the Dagger) needs to be lightly tapped in order to dial in. Again, I'm sorry to stick my nose in, but some of this may be useful to you. Good luck!

That is a specific spec shaft made by Black Eagle. It's the Zombie Slayer, but with tighter tolerances and there's only one place on the planet to get them.....South Shore Archery Supply (Tapp Nation). For all your efforts and all you do for the crossbow community, you owe it to yourself to give Jerry Ratliff a call and have a chat....you'll be glad you did. Was using the headhunter arrows barnett recommended for the white tail 2 and had a really hard time obtaining consistency. I switched to pro elite 400s and got rid of the useless stock optics in favor of a hawke xb30c. Made a world of difference over the previous set up.

I dont know why I like you...but I do. I like your "common sense" approach and analysis. Im new to crossbow and im using a 370fps model. The bolts that came with it were 370gr with a 100gr fixed point. I lost my first deer, and its because I didn't get a pass through. I upgraded to 400gr bolts.....dead dear, no problem. I have since grabbed the Rage crossbow X.....but ive yet to make a shot with them. Great Channel....subbed!

Excellent overview. I've been an archery hunter for over 20 years, but took up crossbow hunting for the 2017 season. Since then I have added a second crossbow. When I first started shooting a crossbow the first thing I discovered is that no two arrows seemed to fly the same. So, when dialing in my bow, I would pick one arrow and sight it in as close to perfection as possible. And then I would put the two arrows in my quiver that flew closest to my best arrow. So far I have killed 11 deer with my crossbow and have achieved a complete pass thru on all of them except one. I am using an arrow that weighs 425 grains. Now, I have hunted whitetail deer exclusively in North Carolina and Virginia and bucks there probably weigh an average of 175 pounds. One of my crossbows is rated at 380 feet per second, the other 410. Just about all of my shots are closer than 25 yards. At that distance and at that speed, the deer just cannot react quickly enough to "jump the string" . But your points are spot on. If I were shooting at longer distances I absolutely would be shooting heavier arrows. The penetration and accuracy would definitely be better. I have also experimented with multiple broadheads. And there's no question in my mind that the mechanicals fly better. I've also used the rage hypodermics. They fly great and create devastating wounds

great points here, there are trade offs with every decision in this business. mechanicals might slow penetration as they require energy to open, BUT they fly true in my experience, too, and offer big cutting diameter. I did exactly as you have done with selecting good arrows for the hunt...i will say the arrows I'm using now all fly perfect, but they're .003 straightness and a bit heavier, so that's a big part of it. Well Rich, I'm going on my "first ever" crossbow hunt tomorrow and Saturday. My crossbow doesn't have a name yet. It's a Center Point Sniper 370. I'm excited and nervous all at the same time. I've been practicing with it since January and I'm happy with how it shoots and the "stock bolts" seem to be very accurate out to 50 yards. I'm not going to take a 50 yard shot on a deer but the crossbow is very capable of doing it. Wish me luck.

There are people taking stuff too far in every area of life.

I've gone straight up to 150 fields on my arrows (16 half inch) out of the 360 Pro TD. Trying to save the limbs and to pull tighter groups. Noise is also a factor and should be good considering the pro is tarted up with suppressive stuff. We shall see

*150 grain is what the ORIGINAL DESIGNERS chose to use. 150 grain is what I use. It tends to work well on MOST NORTH AMERICAN sized animals. {FOR BISON OR CAPE BUFFALO....I might go much heavier.} SUGGEST YOU CONSIDER 'future use of' ALUMINUM SHAFTS. EASTON 2219 XX75 "cut to your preferred length" tend to be affordable, durable, accurate, effective ... Tensile strength of EASTON XX75 2219 shafts: 96,000 pounds per square. The tensile strength of Aluminum far exceeds strength of carbon fiber and glue or resin. Aluminum can bend and tends NOT to shatter or splinter. Aluminum are similar in weight to the heaviest versions of carbon arrows....and Aluminum 'just might be' more uniform in weight, from one batch to another. Load wisely, shoot safely, and ... Enjoy the hunt.*

Great vlog. I’m goin heavy. Got an old Excal exomax, just put an old excal used scope on. Just got shooting my new setup w/Easton FMJ 20” bolts, 120gr inserts, 300gr heads. Had to turn the compensator dial down to 250fps to get the cross hair marks dialed in but it is holding 3” groups at 40yrds in -20deg C. Hoping for moose this fall.

Try a cut on contact broadhead to go with your heavy arrow. Will help with passthrough. you wont lose energy with the expansion of the blades.

Kyle Davey Ive watched some of his videos. He prefers a wide two blade. My concern with that in a crossbow is with the higher speed and force involved I've heard people get more movement and a larger groupings due to aerodynamics.

Started using a crossbow last year at the very end of our season. Using Rage Crossbox X. First kill was a doe at 35 yards. Man it punched through her and went 30 more yards until it hit a tree. This past week I shot two trophy bucks. A 10 and an 11. Both bucks 180+ lbs. One buck was from the ground. So I was shooting upward. The arrow penetrated the first lung and went up into the back and stopped. My second buck was from a tree stand at about.28 yards. I shot him high in the shoulder on purpose to drop him. He did but that rage only went through one shoulder and also hit the back bone. Stopped again but didnt have the best penetration. All three deer were dead but man Ive had other broad heads out of bows way slower with arrows around the same weight blow through shoulders, backbones, ribs etc. Im about to try the Wasp Jak X after I shoot my last rage. The rage is nice but seems like when it hits bone it aint meant for breaking em.

A great question. I look at it this way: My longest shot on a deer in over 10 years is 35 yards. I limit myself to 30 pretty much across the board. I like 20 even better. I am happy with any arrow that keeps those distances and allows my scope to compensate and be dead on at those yardages out to 40 yards (that way 35 is dead on). For me, with my older, slower crossbow, as I approach 550 grains I drop below 280fps and it's too slow for the scope to dial in, so that's probably my limit.

i use 540 grain arrows [total weight] i make [upgrade myself]. that i have had great success with. great pass thru and good accuracy. i limit my shots to 30 yards with 95% at 20 yards and under. always one shot. i have always tried to get as close as possible even during rifle season. to me that is what hunting is all about. keep up the good work as i am always waiting on your next video.. all hail___--OH thats your line......haven't been this season yet--been too hot here in north carolina

Hi Rich..great video. I to, have been stepping up my weights. I found 440gn Carbon Express Juggernauts on eBay, and currently have 125gn field points, but want to try the Rage 150gn mechanicals. So far, my Axiom shoots much quieter, and still accurate. The Axiom always seems to be accurate...come to think of it..lol

Nice video. Like I always say: Accuracy is #1! Tune the arrow to the bow or tune the bow to the arrow. Never confuse impact point with arrow flight. One thing Ashby had right was arrow flights importance as the more weight directly behind the point in flight the greater the impact force and penetration for a given weight projectile.

You make some good points, Mr Cactus. I did listen to a podcast recently claiming front of center and mass of the arrow are distinct and separate considerations, and penetration is not necessarily improved by high FOC. They were basing this purely on science. The guest on the podcast claimed to have spoken with Dr. Ashby and had his agreement. I do think, however, that once the arrow passes through the other side of the animal, the high FOC will help pull that arrow out of the animal. You are correct about accuracy, I have a friend who says the same thing. ;)

Like driving a nail in one strike, all forces must be in line. The nail does not need front of center though the hammer does benefit. The nail gun needs nothing except the nail goes directly from gun to board on a guided path. Thus, the arrow needs to be aligned in flight to be direct and unwavering for maximum effect. An off kilter nail is similar to an arrow flying tail in, out, up or down. Penetration improves with alignment for a given mass and speed.

Love your vidos I shoot 467 bolts with rage had hard time finding targets to stop them . For the people that has same problem go to Rual King get a truck mud flap tie it on back works great or bone collector discharge target.

ive always used heavy arrows,ive been running 250+grain shaft/head combos on every cross bow i own from cheap to higher tier bows

I had an opposite accuracy issue this last year. I had been shooting a heavier arrow. Ten point 20" Hunter Pro Elite with a 175 grain 4 blade fixed, Slick Tricks. I had poor groups and occasional flyer hitting high and left. So i went back to 125 grain mechanicals and groups tight and no more flyers! Weird

Yep, no guarantees in this business, could be the mechanical flies better than the fixed blade, they do require tuning sometimes. Thanks for the feedback, glad it's working better for you now, and good luck out there!

Just ordered a wicked rite fury 410. They come with 400 grain bolts, I will be using slick trick griz trick 2’s. That puts my arrows at 525.

Not sure if I missed you say it but how much did the stock arrow complete with broadhead set up weigh? As always love the videos. Getting to head out tomorrow for the first hunt this year!!👍. By the way my complete set up weight is 450gr. Seems to have worked fine. Not sure how heavy that is considered though.

385 (285 arrow plus 100 grain broadhead) is my "stock" arrow, if yours are accurate you should be good!

I use victory 350 grain arrows and I put 150 grain swhacker 3inch cut broad heads. 500 grains. I wanted to try the "slash arrows" with those broad heads to see if I could get a huge 5.25 inch cut.

It would be a double lung and heart and liver shot all in one. Lol Over all it would be a 5.25 inch cut but it would be in the shape of a cross. Id really like to see if it would work right

I understand the view about what the company recommends. I didn't want to break the bank on my first crossbow so I went with Killer Instinct I really am a gun lover so I am in new territory. I am finding people are trying to get more speed but the limbs are not holding up to these light arrows. The crossbow I got will shoot the light arrows over 400 ft per second. I am hearing the magic number is 500 grains plus to preserve your limbs and not have that limb issue. Can you recommend 20 inch arrows and field tips to get me over 500 grains it's just gonna be shooting targets. This for me is just something to take out shooting because here in Arizona the only time you can use a crossbow is during rifle season but I knew that when I purchased it. It is just something to use field tips with to take out and shoot when we take the guns out or now with the ammo shortage this crossbow can fill the void. I sure would like your recommendation on good sturdy arrows and field tips that will get me over 500 grains for just target shooting thanks I am new and am loving your videos.

Arizona, that's cool. Been there with Bunjie, hope to return some day for javelina. Look at South Shore Archery to build heavier arrows, great place to start, but in my opinion you could just use a 150 grain broadhead and you'll be happy.

One video I saw relating to this was about limb damage, the fella thinks there are a lot more limb damage reports because these bows are coming with lighter bolts to achieve these higher fps ratings they are putting out. I don't remember who it was that said it, but I can definitely see how that could be the case, just another reason.

Can you help answer this question: how much energy does a crossbow arrow have at ling range, eg 50 yards? Many crossbow hunters believe they can now take longer shots because they can accurately hit the target at 50 yards, but does the arrow have enough energy to kill? This would entail shooting through your chronograph at 50 yards. How much speed is lost across 50 yards? Energy?

There is loss for sure and the are several online sites that can calculate pretty close without shooting through chrono at long distance. In my book you can't beat close up shots!

It may have already been mentioned, but also check out the Black Eagle Executioner bolts for your Excalibur. They work great, have a great front of center with their brass inserts, allow you to use any 125g broad heads instead of only Excalibur broadheads, and have a straightness of +/- 0.001 for a very affordable price.

@@Deathbybunjie Yes you can use any broad head with any arrow. Here is what I meant by that. For a while after receiving my Excalibur 365 limited I was using the factory/stock bolts that came with the bow. How ever, the issue I ran into was that in using those bolts I needed a 150g broad head to meet the factory recommend "safe" total arrow weight for the bow. I was having trouble finding 150g broad heads other than the Excalibur fixed blade broad heads. So I discovered the B.E.E. bolts which had a pre-installed weighted brass insert that allowed me to use 125g broad heads and still be at the same front of center weight and over the minimum recommended bolt weight. I'm sure there are other brands that sport the same feature or one could build his own arrow but the B.E.E's seem unbeatable for the price and I have been using them ever since with great success and performance. I am with you on the thought process of using heaver bolts. Even though penatration has never been an issue on my Excalibur 365. Last year I shot a doe through the ribs with a 2.25 inch rage broad head and the bolt traveled another 60 yards after exiting the rib cage. (Shooting from ground level) Thanks for the awesome informative videos!

The Black eagle executioners are made by the same company as the spinal Tapp, the Spinal Tapp has a stiffer spine which is recommended for most recurve crossbows.

You're probably around 390 or a bit more if you put a 150 grain on a stock arrow, that is my guess. I hope you like that broadhead as much as we do!

*Cool. You finally tried it. HEAVIER ARROWS TEND TO YIELD... More KINETIC ENERGY, USUALLY QUIETER, DEEPER PENETRATION, possibly more durable shaft... LONGER inserts might increase durability. FYI: 528 grains is really close to my ^Aluminum EASTON 'older version' EXCALIBUR MARKED 20" 2219 XX75 ARROWS. THE NO TIP WEIGHT: 350 GRAINS WITH PLASTIC HALF MOON NOCK. Roughly 370+ GRAIN with aluminum flat nock {a.k.a. RPS INSERT} or illuminated nock. ADDING 150 GRAINS arrowhead.... puts you in the 500+ grains arena. Yes, at 528 grains or more, It will Moose.*

I assembled my own arrows this year for the first time. 22 inch 8.8mm carbon shaft with a brass 110 grain insert and a 100 grain mechanical broad head 4 inch vains and half moon nocks. total weight 550 grains with an 18.04% FOC. I can't believe how accurate these are compared to the liter factory 20 inch arrows. My crossbow shoots at 350 fps with the factory arrows I don't know what the FPS is with the heavier arrow as I don't have a chronograph. These 22 inch arrows will "Moose"!

Oh yeah they'll moose. accuracy is #1 so that sounds good to me! (keep in mind you probably "moosed" with the factory setup, too--350fps with a 385 grain arrow and broadhead combo "mooses")

Maybe...it COULD affect shot elevation especially as distance increases...best to test it and better yet get both practice and hunting same weight.

I only use flat, but thats an excal thing. If your manufacturer says half moon, then use that. I see no reason to experiment with such things. Thank you and I hope you're having a safe season too!

So what is considered a heavier arrow? My bow came with 370grain arrows (killer instinct) I have purchased 405 grain arrows since all I keep hearing is the arrows it comes with are to light and cause limb breaks. Should i have gone even heavier

400 + is a good starting point, I like a bit more personally and it depends on the crossbow too

I've been using 542 grain piledrivers with 100-125 broadheads.

Took my firsr deer of the year with a 770 grain out of a 380 bow. My next is with a 607 grain arrow out of a 308 bow.

200 grain 4" inserts and 300 grain tuff head broadheads. Add a lighted nock and a 9.9 grain shaft and thats basically it.

As I have stated before, with heavy arrows, it's best to get rid of the flapper heads like you like, and use a super sharp fixed head broadhead, like the Magnus broadheads line up, the Steel Force Broadheads made here in Pa., I feel where the flapper broadheads work best in a fall or spring turkey. The best reason for the fixed broadheads is you can go single blade and can be re-sharpened over and over, or you can make them super sharp out of the package. With a super sharp fixed broadhead the animal doesn't know it was shot.

I am personally in the process of building a 650 grain arrow but wouldn't consider a flapper broadhead to go with it... The heavy weight is to make up for situations where something goes wrong, I want maximum damage and fast kills... not a cool entry wound

It's a well know fact that XB manufacturers, like Excalibur; have moved to shorter more lightweight arrows to market compact products with higher advertised velocities. They know velocity sells products.

They were custom made for me as a gift, I did not order them, but they're 427gr (arrow only) from what I recall

Rich I shoot a 150 grain kudu point with a 100 grain insert with a 350 grain arrow. Out of my Excalibur micro 335 I have never had a arrow not pass through on elk hogs and deer with this setup . The single bevel kudu with the heavier insert is hard to stop . Killed 5x5 bull elk last September at 46 yards and completely passed through and stuck into the mountain behind him . I also shot a deer at 118 yards with a complete pass through with the same setup , you would need to hear the reason for the crazy long shot and see the pics it was crazy

Hi rich , how are you liking those spinal taps? I'm still using diablo's and are now stuck between getting the taps or executioners. I have however switched from the ramcats to the sevr robusto and already see a big difference in accuracy and penatration .

Jamey, the Spynal Taps are made from a Black Eagle Executioner blank arrow. They are .001 verses .003 Straightness Tolerance. FYI Some forums say you can't tell the difference at 30 yards. I like to know I can reach out further if the buck of a lifetime walks out. So I went with the .001 Spynal Taps but I keep one "off the shelf" Executioner in my quiver to shoot hogs so I don't waste my custom built arrows on a pig. They weigh and fly about the same at closer ranges.

@@Manley_Crypto thanks for the info, the person I spoke with at south shore archery the tapps were zombie slayer shafts but they too are black eagle either way I have ordered the tapps . I'm already getting good penatration from my excalibur at various ranges just wanted to tighten my groups up and quiet honestly the sevr broadheads alone did that. In the end it all comes down to the respect I have and the ethical shot I want to place on the animal I harvest. Many thanks to you again.

Good question, basically no difference to me with the crossbows I've used, based on chronos (some) and lots of target shooting in all weather BUT some Friends of Bunjie have reported their crossbows differ when it's cold. A good test to run with any crossbow you hunt with! I do leave 'em out for an hour before cocking it if it's cold.

I'm using 400 grain bolts with 100 grain heads.....it does well.....so far.

HELP! New to crossbows and have a new Centerpoint Amped 425. The arrows I have for it are 300 GR with 100 GR tips. Since I got the bow (haven’t shot it yet) I’ve been reading that arrows of 425 GR or higher lengthen the limbs life span. I’m assuming that’s 425 GR WITH the tips. First, is my assumption of the weight figuring correct? Second, are 400 GR with tip too light? I don’t want to trash this thing after 50 shots

I think it varies a lot from one crossbow to another but yes they are talking about total grain weight and also I think 450 is a good place to start personally

I'm not really a fan of heavy arrows, but I played around with them, look at Crossbow Appreciation Month videos from 2020 and you'll see plenty of discussion there.

Been a compound guy since i was 13 yrs old.im now 42 yrs old.bought my first crossbow last year.just used the "stock" arrows to sight in.i could not shoot dead acurate past 30 yards.for weeks i tried sighting it in.almost gave up & told myself crossbow hunting is not for me! I was so angry i thought the bow or scope was defective.i finaly used my brain & thougjt maybe these arrows are too light & getting squirley at further ranges.bow is shooting 370fps.way too fast!! I switched over to an aluminum "heavier" arrow.used a heavier tip & BAM!!! started drilling bullseye.i now have my crossbow hitting a half dollar size target every shot at 60 yrds.every shot! Deadly.

I agree AirGunner... When I switched to Jerry's Spynal Tap custom arrows my 50 yard shots went from a 4 inch pattern down to bulls eyes! I have never taken a 50 yard shot on a deer but I know I am fully capable of doing so. I have been shooting the same Spynal Tap arrows for five years now. I broke the first one this past weekend when I hit a buried rock.

I like aluminum arrows over carbon because once you get the spine right, they all shoot the same. Carbon is annoying to tune because their spine is not consistent arrow to arrow due to a stiffer side and less stiff side. 2219's with 200 grains up front shoot amazingly well for me. Field points and two blade broadhead shoot very close to each other at 20 yard zero. This is a good test by the way for the correct arrow point weight. If your replaceable blade or fixed blade broadhead shoots more than 2 or so inches away from your field points, you might want to change the point weight (usually heavier) until they hit less than 2 inches apart at 20 yards. Note: Always shoot the broadhead arrow first, at close range, and sight in for that broadhead, then back up to 20 and shoot both. You can also shoot bare shaft testing, but that's a whole different subject.

a great question--it's a sliding scale. for the purposes of this video, i think you can start with anything heavier than what the manufacturer sold you with the crossbow. I killed almost all my deer with 385 grain arrow rigs. to me, 528 grains is "heavy." but to some people who shoot 900 grain rigs--that's nothing. i'd suggest wait until you see next week's video before you rush out and buy new ones lol.

1980's150#.Barnett Commando, 400 gr. FP, 204FPS =37ft/lbs. 1960's Whamo Powermaster 80# 400gr., 176 FPS, =27.58 ft/lbs. Old school 20 yard deer bows. Both shoot 1 to 2" groups at 10 to 20 yards. Been doing this 60 + years. I don't like anything that has a wheel on it....yet.

I shoot PileDrivers with my Titan M1... I don’t think I’ve ever had one animal stop them

One of the reasons that they r talking heavier bolts is to stop broken arms, supposedly from dry firing light arrows on the 400+ FPS bows, heavy bolts will slow the arrow as the wt goes up

After watching both videos on the subject, I think you missed a point. Some of us running faster crossbows are finding a new challenge. Keeping mechanicals closed till impact. I'm pushing stock weight arrows around 400fps and the field tips are crazy accurate. Switch to a mechanical and they are opening in flight. This has me considering a heavier setup to offset early openings. At this point I can target shoot but I don't have something woods worthy yet. Great videos, like that you can play both sides of the argument with valid points for both.

Interesting! Curious, what mechanicals have you had this issue with? Also, I think it is possible they don't open on impact as easily sometimes since moving through the deer so fast, open up in deer on way through. SEEMS like it could be an issue although I have no proof of it...

@@Deathbybunjie I have tried Swhacker and Rocky Mountain Warheads so far. I'm not opposed to going with something else if it stays closed till impact. I can hear the SWACK when I pull the trigger. The target shows the blades open and they fly crazy.

@@CrawldaBeast I shoot a Tenpoint Shadow and the Grim Reaper mechanicals for X bow's stay closed until impact if that helps you. Also consider the professional tip series. They punch through bone if you happen to his a shoulder.

@@Manley_Crypto Thanks,, I will will give them a try. My Bear X Saga 405 Xbow pushes them out there pretty fast. The accuracy has been awesome with field points, but I haven't clocked any yet. I just can't get anything huntable to fly true. Maybe the 125gr heads would be the ticket. Sometimes one technology improves and the others have to catch up.

What do you think about using lead wire for adding weight up front? I'm buying a 405fps bow this weekend, and I want to experiment with some heavier arrows, (my other bow is a 345fps and I was loathe to sacrifice the speed on that one) but I don't want to spend a bunch more money, on top of what I'm paying for the new bow package. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd look at heavier bhead or inserts

I 3D hunt older Phoenix, can cock with manual pullers all day long,light arrows don't go in targets as deep,but I hunt with matrix 355 ,heavy arrows and rage,happy hunting

Heavier arrows would reduce the amount of sudden stop shock on the limbs and cables.

there is no downside to shooting a heavy high/super high f.o.c. bolt. I could go on and on about energy transfer and retention as well as harmonics and momentum. If there is a downside its that heavy bolts in a high speed x bow destroy expandable broadheads, but I'm a fixed blade guy so no loss here.

The whole reason people go with high FOC setups is because of the proven fact that you can break the scapula on most large animals. The tests keep showing demolished scapulas over and over again so there’s no point in NOT aiming at the actual shoulders anymore. Same with the rib cage, this only happens when a high FOC arrow is paired with a single bevel dual blade fixed broad head though

Except the vitals on a deer aren't really behind the shoulder...

No disrespect meant is this statement. Looking at your pictures of hogs you have shot most look almost completely domestic (floppy ears, short hair and curly tails). Nothing like the wild boar we have here in NW Florida. Even with the modern crossbow shooting well over 400fps, a mechanical head will not penetrate the protective sheath much at all. To be truly effective you must use a heavy arrow and fixed blade broadhead combo. My setup came with the heaviest arrow listed for that bow. I set up with the heaviest arrow/broadhead I can get away with that provides the best combination of accuracy and penetration. It may be over kill most of the time but I never need to give it a seconds thought when an unexpected situation presents or I fudge the shot a bit. With all that said, the reason the industry has so many options is not everyone wants the same thing from "their" setup. Shoot whatever works for you and don't worry about what someone else thinks. @@Deathbybunjie You wouldn't think so but I have shot 300lb + boars with my Thompson Encore (150gr Triple 7/300gr Hornady XTP) and not penetrated the shoulder sheath. Some you can't even push your knife though when skinning. Tough critters built for battle.

This year I've gone through 4 broadhead types so far for that awesome penetration goal. So far my setup of a 302gr arrow with a 125gr head is too much for my target and its passing through my "400 FPS" crossbow target with my "375 FPS" crossbow. Guess I need to step up to a foam layer target. Ultimately I plan to step up to a 435gr arrow with a 150gr broadhead, but that's a ways out.

@@Deathbybunjie Actually, my goal is to reduce the "death run" that white tail do to a shorter distance. I had a small buck run 120 yards with a double lung shot a few weeks ago using a 100gr Grim Reaper 1.5" mechanical. That took me almost an hour to find him because I am hunting in a heavily wooded area and the blood was limited to a few drops every 5 feet. After doing a fair amount of research on that topic I have heard time and time again that the longer cut on contact fixed blades with a smooth pass through cause many white tail to take the shot, run 15-20 yards then stop and try to assess what happened, then they realize they're hurt and move away slower. I know that may be anecdotal, but I would prefer to improve my odds of reducing the distance I have to track, as I feel it increases my chances of losing the trail the farther they go.
