    I bought a 79 new in 1979 for $12,100. It now (2024) has 12,500 miles on it. Blue on blue (see thumbnail). Just replaced the tires after 44 years. Always garaged, always covered, never seen rain or snow. Still in mint condition.

    I have a stunning lemans blue 2005 c6. The c4s were the least good looking Bette’s in my opinion but still nicer than most cars of that era. Look what they did to the Camaro. My 81 was a beautiful car and the next generation was hideous.

    I traded my 82 elcamino about a week ago for a one owner 60k miles 79 c3 . C3 been sitting indoors since 03, so she needs work , but does run and somewhat drive. I always wanted a c3 . At 60 years old I finally got one . Super happy with the trade. Had the Elco for a few years and basically just finished rebuilding it. Everyone tells me I got the better end of the deal. I agree. C3 is what a vette should look like.

    I also own a '79. I'd add to to your list of reasons to like the car. It's a wonderful Blank Slate to work on. Your freed up to change the performance to what-ever you want. No worries about what you might be doing to originality because no-one cares about that sad, weakling SBC the car was delivered to it's original dealer with under the hood. I'm still pretty amazed at the idea of the L-82 call out badging I removed so many years ago. The very idea that this even happened is a reminder of how very bleak things had gotten in the years of those first efforts to produce cars with an eye toward cleaning up what came out of the tail pipes.

    Not an expert here but I did ask my vette shop! Depending on the cam, you could get 10-30hp overall increase in performance. If you decide to add a performance carb, it will also depend on the carb and the “tune” you give it. You also need ti consider that by adding a performance carb, you may also want to look at other parts such as exhaust. Hope this helps!

    At over 40 years old virtually none of these cars have there original engines intact. The great part about an emissions era car is that engine freedom. No big worries about what losing originality under the hood and what that would mean to the value of your car. "big boy" engines from the 1960s? Which would those be? Outside of some really exotic very high priced L88 or ZL1 427s I can't think of any engines that would be something I'd want between the fenders these days. Engines from the late '60 and early '70s had flat lifter cams and grossly inferior heads to what's available now and they come up way short. Today even a traditionally configured carburetor topped SBC can lay waste to memories of the "big boy" engines. Roller cammed 383 crate engines start at the power levels well above those of the late 60s and early 70s. 400in and larger strokes get to levels that would have seemed so racy in the pre-emission era no-one would have imagined it could be street friendly vs arrive at the drag strip on a trailer crazy. Modern BBCs configured with all the modern tech make mountains of torque and Horse power. 800HP has become so common if your willing to go there that it no longer even seems especially crazy. Then there are those LS swaps for guys who are willing to go to completely modern. 500+ starting points and MPG both. Time is cruel mistress. Lift the hood at a car show and an all original "big boy" engine will provide fond memories from those of us old enough to remember them. But a quick spin in 'em and the lack of "go" is where it becomes a dilemma for an owner of an older all original car. You know you could do far better but moving away from all original isn't the easy choice that it is in an emissions era car.

  • @Mncrr

    @Mncrr

    Can’t these original engines be rebuilt for a couple grand into high performance? Isn’t a 350 block similar to the ones 7-8 years earlier?

  • @stevejewell9263

    @stevejewell9263

    11 ай бұрын

    @@Mncrr They can and in the 1990s that might have been worth doing to keep up with what is considered "decent sports car power". Back then the goal might have been 300HP-400HP. That 300+ HP could be done reasonably with just a top end make-over. Vortec heads, an aggressive flat tappet cam and the stock 350 cubic inches. Today though 400HP is barely entry level power. To get something reliable at power levels this high and at a reasonable price it's pretty tough to beat a crate motor. You could do it with the original engine but by the time you add that roller cam, modern aluminum heads and a stroker crank, rods and pistons you'll need to make it happen.......the idea of a complete motor with a warranty delivered for installation gets pretty hard to match considering the cost of the parts and machine work.
